Dynasty draft question

I have the first pick in a 30-team dynasty league - 25 man MLB roster, 40 man MiLB roster. I've got a beater of a team, with a few young pieces (Arenado, Rubby, Minor) and not much else, and am rebuilding through the minors. I tried to trade away the pick for multiple pieces but have only had one offer, and it wasn't really to my liking.

All 2011 draft picks are eligible, and until today I was down to Darvish and Rendon as my top pick. With Cespedes signing, though, he is now eligible to be drafted as well. Since I have a rebuilding team, Cespedes doesn't quite fit my team, but I'm thinking of drafting him to trade him to a contender for multiple pieces.

So, should I draft Cespedes and attempt to deal him, or just draft one of the other top guys (Darvish, Bauer, Rendon) and follow my team model? Much thanks!

Rendon

I have to go Rendon here if you are rebuilding. Darvish will pitch most of this year, so he’s actually more MLB-ready than Cespedes. Bauer is also pretty close. So I would go with Rendon, the most stable pick at a slim position in the minors (counting him as a 2B). Of course you could circulate Cespedes’ promo video from Youtube and see if you can sucker Harper’s owner into it!

Depends

on how long your rebuild phase is. If its 1-2 years I would take Darvish, if its longer than that I would take Bauer or Rendon (took Bauer in mine but pretty much tossed a coin)

I would rank them as

Darvish - Top prospect out of them all, will produce instantly

Rendon - Top hitting prospect other then harper and trout that is falling in the 15-25 range on most lists.

Bauer - Top 10-15 prospect who is young and could be an ace for years to come.

Cespedes - Not sure where he would be slated, probably 15-20, tremendous raw power but a lot of contact concerns when he reaches the majors, also playing in oakland will limit a lot of his counting stats.

Don’t let darvish’s age scare you, he’s only 25-26 and will be a solid fantasy pitcher for at least 5 years, and he could provide ace type value if all goes right.

I second this

this was exactly how I was going to rank them

not to mention

he has arenado as a 3b prospect already. that is probably the biggest reason i’d take darvish over rendon. Rubby has injury issues, and Minor doesn’t have TOR potential really, more like a solid 3

Darvish…will produce instantly

and you know this, how? i mean, i like the guy but he’ll produce instantly? there’ll be no troubles adjusting to the larger ball or quicker game?

ok.

Darvish may not produce "instantly" but the ranking still looks right to me

Darvish needs no development time but will start the season as an athletic 25 year old with a track record of success. He’s built like Verlander and has been just as durable….way more positives than the downside of trouble adjusting to mlb, and far less risk than a draftee from 2011.

I agree with the rest of dbreer23’s rankings but I wouldn’t even consider drafting anyone else in this format and if I was shopping that pick I would be looking for a Moore/Harper/Trout or Kennedy/Sandoval/Hosmer return.

I'd go Yu Darvish

Pretty easily too (for most of the reasons listed above). He’s the top prospect here (in my opinion).

I agree - Darvish

Best mix of floor and ceiling considering Rendon’s health/position concerns.

If 100% healthy then Rendon - hands down. I only add this as I am not sure when your draft is and we should find out more about Rendon’s health in the next few months.

If you have to pick today then Darvish. Stay away from Cespedes picking this high.

if you've got a couple days

then i’d keep dangling it a bit. if you dont get what you want, theraft darvish

Keep pimping it as trade bait

I had the #1 pick in a league this year and put it on the block; offers started out slow but ramped up in the past couple weeks until I got an extremely favorable return. For contending teams especially Darvish is extremely attractive.

Nicely put. This is a special case so do not sell that pick unless you're blown away

BAUER

Simple, takek Bauer and forget everything else. You can’t go wrong with a guy that is going to be the Diamondbacks ace by 2014 at the very latest, if not 2013.

Tyler Skaggs scoffs at your notion.

and Archie Bradley might have the highest ceiling of the 3.

haha......not to mention Hudson and Kennedy are both young and might even get better

Love Bauer too but that’s some insane competition for the label of DBack Ace.
