7/3 Montgomery v. Mobile Scouting Report

I am by no means a professional scout.  These are just my opinions and observations I made from one game.  So, here you go.

Going into the game, I was excited to watch Paul Goldschmidt.  Afterwards, I was more impressed with A.J. Pollock.  Don't get me wrong, Goldy was impressive.  He is all of 6-3, 245.  As you can see in the video, he has a wide batting stance and generates all of his power from his hips.  He was patient in most of his at bats, including drawing a walk.  I can see him hitting .285/.375/.575 in the bigs.  Goldy has some speed for a 1B.  He made it to third on an terrible fielding error (should have been a single) by the CF.  Overall, I was happy with what I saw in him and his numbers are legit.

Star-divide

Now, the guy who stole the show for me, A.J. Pollock.  I absolutely loved his glove and arm.  He made a long run to catch a fly at the wall that he only got to because he had an incredible jump on it.  Every ball hit to him was made with ease.  In the second inning, Pollock showed off a plus, fringe plus-plus arm.  With Nevin Ashley on second, the Biscuits batter flied out to center (330-360 ft) and Pollock threw a bullet to the cut-off man.  He was positioned where the SS is usually at for double play depth.  The SS never moved an inch and Ashley would have been out by 10-15 ft.  I liked Pollock's contact skills but don't see him ever hitting more than 10 HRs in a season.  He looks be a leadoff or number two hitter at the big league level.

And then there's Tim Beckham.  I am a Rays fan as you can see by my avatar so I was interested in seeing one of minorleagueball's more scrutinized prospects.  Tim could have been the best player on the field but I never would have noticed his skills.  What I did notice was his lack of care/interest/heart.  What I saw was a 21 year old, less talented B.J. Upton.  It looked like the only thing that matter to Tim Beckham was Tim Beckham.  Every time I saw Tim take grounders in between innings, he was walking into the outfield to pick up the ball that just went under his glove.  He was also the only player I heard screaming expletives on their way to the dugout after striking out.  Granted, I understand you are allowed to be frustrated and these are men playing ball but I felt like it was to draw attention to himself.  One aspect of his game that I did notice was his fielding.  There was a hard hit grounder hit near second that I thought he could get to but he was late reacting to the hit.  I don't see him as a SS but more of a 2B or CF.  Didn't BJ Upton take that path?  Just a side note, I'm not a fan of B.J. and would love to see the Nats take him away from the Rays.

Last but not least, there's Nick Barnese.  First, the stadium's speed gun wasn't working so I don't have any speed readings.  Nick did display an ability to throw his fastball past many batters.  Sometimes he threw a chest high fastball for strike three.  Barnese maintained his velocity well into the 6th.  He also displayed an above average curve that had a couple of batters way out in front of the pitch.  His command was pretty good.  The last pitch in the video, where he spins after his release, he hit the batter high on the shoulder.  To me, it doesn't look like Nick uses much legs but relies mostly on his arm and wrist.  His arm action and 3/4 arm slot just looked unconventional to me.  I can see #3 potential but seems to be more of #4 or #5 quality innings eater.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have and I'll try my best to answer them over the next day or two.

thanks for the info on Beckham and Barnese

its to bad the stadium gun was not working.

No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

Best Guess

The way he was making some swing and miss badly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he touched 94-95.

Great video

Thanks for the Goldy video. I am one of his biggest fans and his approach looked pretty impressive. I didn’t see him chasing bad pitches which is encouraging.

Looks like he changed his stance a lot since I saw him last.

Ditto

Your report was interesting too - I’m pleased that you alluded to the fact that Paul Goldschmidt is semi-athletic & runs well for a big man. This isn’t CJ Cron or Jesus Montero or something.

Lack of caring

was more in the sense of being at the ballpark or having to do the little things.

As for him being frustrated, I was trying to point out that it is was somewhat fake. He was more upset that the spotlight wasn’t on him so if I yell, people will look at me.

I hope that makes more sense.

Thanks for the clarification

This is actually the first time I’ve read about a less than rosy account regarding with work ethic/make-up. He did have physical conditioning issues last season.

Also, he is in a slump these days. That could be affecting his demeanor.

It's very possible

that I caught him on a bad night.

Yes

Because having a bias against BJ Upton and Tim Beckham is great evidence that the OP is a racist.

Tim Beckham obviously had a bad day

I have read about Tim Beckham’s slow development. However, I get the opportunity to see him play in Montgomery at least 1 game of every homestead. I have also had the pleasure of meeting him away from baseball. I have seen him at batting practice. I do not work for the team, just simply a local fan. I was also present to see BJ Upton & Delmon Young at that level. He is nothing like what you described. He has performed nothing like what I had read before his current season. I think part of that is because of where he is in his proffesional development and maturing process. But a bigger issue I believe, is not having his brother Jeremy there with him anymore. Jeremy was a motivator, guidance counselor, and best friend to him. He had to “man up” and learn how to push himself last year. I think this year he is finally getting used to being accountable for himself. Having his brother there in his 1st few years was also an opportunity for him to not bond with his teammates. He had all of last year to really adjust to that. Taking your best friend to summer camp is a different experience than if you went all by yourself, not knowing anybody. Ya know? I don’t see the “all about me” attitude in him that you described. Nor the laziness. I’ve seen him be very aggressive with his defense this year & he has worked well with a new DP partner, especially Cole Figueroa. I watched him working with Longoria when he was on his rehab assignment working on some plays, picking his brain. I think the frustration you saw that day was disappointment in himself. Tim is one of the most “graceful” players I have ever watched. He glides so smoothly on the field in such a natural manner. Nothing awkward about him playing his position. For those who say he will eventually be moved to the outfield, I disagree. He was born to be a shortstop. I have never seen him shouting expletives on his way to the dugout. He was killing it before the all star break & has been in a slump, which ALL players go through. Another thing that may have helped him this year is having another #1 overall draft pick on the team. Matt Bush knows what it is like to be given a ton of $ at 18 and be pushed into the spotlight quickly with huge pressure put on him. I know that Matt is going through his own adjustments right now, but had stated that he felt he had ALOT of wisdom to share with Tim about his own mistakes. I have seen him contribute to some great games so far, and I hate that you didn’t have that same experience. This is one of the most talented teams as a whole that I have seen in a few years. They aren’t winning like I thought they would, one night the pitching/defense is great but no run support, the next night the guys are raking-but committing errors. But I can see the growth with every game. I say be patient with Beckham. The focus is there. The confidence is mounting. He is turning a big corner. These guys are at this level to learn. So let him. I hope you get the opportunity to see him play on a better night.

The way Barnese doesn't use his lower half

It looks like he’s just playing catch in the backyard… then the arm goes by in a flash and you wonder how the heck it got going that quickly…

I’d be worried about his arm’s health long-term with how little he uses his lower half.
