I don't even like Lee that much
The drop from Moore to Lee is almost as big as Lee to #3.

that's an interesting vote of confidence in Dietrich
Doesn’t say a whole lot for the guy they drafted in the first round a couple of years ago solely on the strength of his power, though . . .
by mrkupe on Dec 21, 2025 11:06 AM EST reply actions
I was surprised by that too
also quite a vote for Ty Morrison’s athletic ability, for a guy who has mostly just run fast in 3+ seasons

I don't see why not.
He is a wriy athletic guy.

for sure, but there are some other pretty great athletes in the system though
Lee and Guyer, and also Vettleson (a very good basketball player, and also a Venditte-esque switch pitcher…he must have freakish coordination)
by PrincetonCubs on Dec 21, 2025 2:11 PM EST up reply actions
Lee doesn't seem that strong (although Guyer does make sense).
Vettleson is pretty athletic, but not as much as Morrison, I think.

Mike Mahtook looks way too low
Inconceivably so almost. I think he rises quickly in the estimations of many this Spring & I’d have had him third here.

Not at all for me.
Mahtook is more a lack of weaknesses than any strengths. Not an impact guy and has adjustments to make to end up a solid regular.

Nothing comes to mind and I don't want to force a comp...
I don’t really like Mahtook’s swing (very armsy, don’t see much power coming). He just lacks impact tools, IMO, and he’s not a terribly exciting prospect. Typical college corner guy type… the kind of guy who has lots of 45s to 55’s on his scouting report.

Is Allen Simpson qualified . .
. . to evaluate players? He disagrees with much of that here . . .
http://www.perfectgame.org/articles/View.aspx?article=5586
“4.44 speed”, “superior speed”, “above-average arm strength and raw power potential”, “excellent bat speed and has developed a tight radius to his swing that enables him to hit with power to all fields”, "his natural arm strength has enabled him to switch seamlessly from center to right field throughout his career at LSU ", “Not only is he now an accomplished base stealer, but he can go from first to third as efficiently as anyone”, “..combination of athleticism, tools, instincts and approach…”.
There might bve the potential for some “60’s” in there and, perhaps few :“45’s”

I disagree
With the assertion that Mahtook is a ‘typical college corner (OF)’. In fact, I think his speed, arm, natural hitting ability, instinctual baserunning, versatility, etc, separate himself from the minions of generally similar types that I think you’re referring to. I think his present power is fine too. It’s far from scientific, but I like that the new college bats didn’t befuddle Mahtook (unlike guys like Alex Dickerson & Anthony Rendon who went dramatically the other way) &, in fact, his SLG went up & he tied his previous high in HR regardless. My man tripped the light fantastic in the AFL too.
I feel he is an exciting prospect & think he’s overlooked a lot in general. Time will tell though.

Completely agree.
Projected 2015 lineup
LF: Matt Joyce
CF:Desmond Jennings
RF: BJ Upton
There you go.
Saw him in AZ..not impressed.
He’s an Eric Byrnes clone.
by Kelsdad on Dec 23, 2025 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
Honest question
Eric Byrnes outcome - what in the world would be wrong with that? That’s a pretty good baseball player during the meat of his prime & Mahtook should reach the MLB level earlier than Byrnes did. I might lift that Byrnes comparison going FW to bolster people’s perceptions of Mahtook actually.
As for the projected 2015 lineup, please excuse me for not putting a ton of stock in that. Should I infer that Alexes Cobb, Torres & Colome will be AAAA guys because they’re not included in that cursory listing? If Ben Zobrist is manning 1b in the AL East for TB in 2015 by the way (he’ll be 33-34 & his defensive contributions likely minimized), maybe Baltimore will finally be able to make some headway for what that’s worth. In my opinion, that stuff is just there for basic fan placation. Not a copout, but I don’t gleam much from them.

“Eric Byrnes clone”
I meant physically, they look and move a lot alike on the field.

Ok, I see
I hear you & that is true from what I’ve seen of Mahtook on TV. The copious amounts of ‘unkempt lettuce’ doesn’t hurt that comparison either.

"As for the projected 2015 lineup, please excuse me for not putting a ton of stock in that."
I happen to agree with you, to a point.
I think we both know neither Joyce or Upton will be Rays in 2015, so Mahtook likely will be the starting LF.
But the reason for the projections is more of a mirroring of how they view the future of the system, compared to their current rankings.
If I were a Rays fan I would be concerned about the general opinion that my number one pick isn’t projected to be better than a guy who isn’t very good today as a 27 year old, and who certainly won’t be any better as a 31 year old.

Joyce will be in his last arb-eligible year in 2015

Eric Byrnes outcome – what in the world would be wrong with that?
I didn’t drop that comp (and not sure I agree- Byrnes had much louder tools than Mahtook), but nothing is wrong with that… and bear in mind my projection for Mahtook is “pretty good player but not a star” rather than “bust.” His tools are good for a college player, but he doesn’t really stand out or have any carrying tools. Solid, but nothing special.

Always hesitant to put this year’s draft picks on a Top Ten list, but Guerrieri and Mahtook both look pretty good.
Has Beckham spent his credibility and can Hak-Ju Lee actually hit?

Yes to Lee
He has hit .300, for three seasons, in tough leagues to hit in, while being young for each league and, playing shortstopo every day. He can actually hit.

Disagree.
Lee isn’t much of a hitter. Even the BA scouting report uses the term “slapped.” He’ll hit enough and has some patience enough that combined with his glove he’ll be a valuable player but he’s really not much of a hitter.

And there's never been a slap hitter who was a valuable hitter?
One who can walk 7% of the time to boot? Hell, even Juan Pierre at his peak was considered to be a valuable hitter.

It actually doesn't matter what you think here
It is roughly inpossible to be a very giood hitter in the NWL at the age of 18, a good one in the MWL at the age of 19, and a very good one in nthe FSL at the age of 20 without being “much of a hitter”
How do you suppose he got all the hits he’s had the past three seasons exactly?

Rays System
Interesting system.
I agree that there is a drop off from Moore and Lee. Of course there is a big drop off from Moore to Lee as well.
The strength of the Rays system is in depth with potential. Having 13 first round picks the past two years and not signing your 1st and 2nd round picks from two years ago will do that of course.
There are a lot of question marks in this system, though.

Moore saves it.
Take out Moore and it really falls. Not that you would take out Moore for any reason. The depth is impressive but its a lot of tools and raw arms, moreso than in other years. Really transitional year for the system. Its definitely down.

it would be in my Top 10 due to Moore alone
I look at prospect quality more than quantity, since fact is most of these guys just won’t make an impact due to attrition, injury, and all that stuff.
But man, once he’s off the list, I’d have this team in my bottom ten systems… I have to say I’m a little surprised they weren’t able to infuse their system with new talent as well as teams like the Red Sox.

It depends
Moore and to a lesser degree Lee if he hits enough are the only two top 50 overall prospects - with Moore probably in the top 3 overall.
The rest of this system lacks sure-thing prospects but a tremendous amount of depth & potential. While there´ll be a high attrition rate, the odds that this system produces multiple impact players seem significantly higher than for a system that may have a handful of top 75 overall prospects and thus more than the Rays but lesser depth.
To me, the Rays definitely have a top 10 overall system because they probably have 50 legitimate players who have the realistic upside of meaningful major league careers. Does it feature the most probable future All Stars ? Certainly not. Though if I had to choose as a smaller market team, I´d always go for the depth while trying to keep my few select star players - like they´ve smartly done with Longoria or Moore and otherwise hope enough of the young talent sticks and comes through.
Finally, a Tim Beckham question: Wouldn´t he be a logical candidate for an eventual shift to 2b ? The Rays lack a longterm player there and while he may not have the range for SS, he should project as a solid 2bman if the bat indeed plays.
by Doob on Dec 22, 2025 8:35 AM EST reply actions
I think mobility wise and arm wise Beckham fits a lot better at 3B than 2B.
Not convinced he has the actions to be a middle infielder and it wastes one of his assets (his arm).
