K-Rod for PsTBNL?!
Holy schnikes. If that's all it took, according to Jon Heyman... Doug Melvin continues, saying they haven't decided yet who's gonna do what.
"We’re trying to get as many quality pitchers as we can for the last 2 ½ months of the season," said Melvin. "We’re trying to get as much quality as we can.
"This gives us another quality arm in the bullpen. I talked to John and I told him not to worry about it. I told him roles will be dictated by games and by (manager) Ron (Roenicke).
"I couldn’t walk away from the chance to get a pitcher like Francisco and wish later I hadn’t let him get away. We’ve had some injuries in our bullpen, including (setup man Takashi) Saito, and if I let (Rodriguez) get away and somebody went down, I’d kick myself."
The two players to be named later are minor-leaguers, and apparently Buster Olney doesn't think they'll be anyone consequential:
Interesting gamble by the Brewers on k-rod; I bet they gave up very little in terms of PTBNL. Deal also signals strong chance Beltran moved.
Pure salary dump by the Mets. Pure salary add by Brewers, without giving up high-end talent. Bell would have cost a high-end prospect.
So with that in mind, who'd going to Citi Field? Who closes in Milwaukee? And more importantly, did Prince Fielder fall off the wagon and treat himself to a nice, juicy burger after everything that happened today?

Either they have a shit ton of money
or they gave up someone like Mat Gamel or John Axlerod

if you mean Axford...
He’s sticking around to close - if it was Gamel, I doubt he would’ve been listed as a PTBNL.

I HIGHLY doubt Gamel or Axford were in the deal
the trade was all about money.

I wasn't really being serious about axeford
And that would have to be a good deal of money wouldn’t it?

Heath Bell
Not going to take high-end talent to land Bell. Fringe top 100 at most, ~B prospect most likely. He’s a closer rental whose peripherals are middling. His xFIP is extremely mediocre this year.

95% wrong, Id say
0 homers allowed is a VERY strong peripheral, his hits allowed are fine, walks and ks nothing to be allarmed about. He also doesn’t show any decline in stuff and has been consistent for going on 5 years now. I think he can and should be more exoensive than that.

I think he's pointing to his K/9...
and how it’s dropped from 11.1 down all the way to 6.6. Everything else is along his career norms, or better.
by Ambient on Jul 13, 2025 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Quite a few relievers K/9 have gone done this year.
But instead they are getting more groundballs. Look at Kyle Farnsworth, same thing.
No matter how much they are hyped, my teams always find a way to disappoint.

Just a thought: with offense down around the league, perhaps pitchers are adjusting and daring batters to put the ball in play more often?
by limozeen on Jul 13, 2025 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I was referring to
his K% and HR%. It’s nice he hasn’t given up any home runs but definitely a little lucky and not going to continue, as xFIP suggests. His xFIP is not good at all and that’s the metric I personally look at when evaluating relievers. Perhaps it’s harsh to write him off after a half season of baseball where his K% is way down but his kS% and SwStr% are both down (way down in the case of kS%), his GB% is down and his LD% against is up. So no, he’s not getting more ground balls in place of strike outs. This year he’s actually giving up more line drives than the past few.
So less strike outs, less swinging strikes, far less percentage of swinging strike outs compared to overall strikeouts, less ground balls, more line drives, and the highest xFIP of his career when offense is down the most.

A B/B+ prospect sounds a lot better than what the Mets are probably going to get.

Maybe a young kid + a reclamation project
Something like Rogers or Arnett (the reclamation) + youngster (no suggestions on who, though)

Arnett is having a much better season this year
but he is old for the league

So the Mets sent $5MM in the deal too...
Now it’s seeming like the Brewers actually are giving up someone of consequence. Kind of a shame, really, that system is already in absolute shambles. Not like they needed to give up anyone else worth a darn.

Not likely
It’s looks like the $5MM is for the remainder of this year, and the Brewers have to pay his $3.5MM buyout next season. I would guess the player(s) are going to be insignificant. The Mets gave him away to save $3.5MM by the looks of it.

Shedding salary appears to pretty clearly be the primary objective here.
by Matt0330 on Jul 13, 2025 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, the Mets were probably very anxious to get him off the team before it got into an awkward situation where they demote him from the closers role and then deal with the players union.
Because there was no way they were going to let him finish 55 games.

What would cause those players to be PTBNL'd?
2010 draft picks?
by Ben Tumbling on Jul 13, 2025 5:57 AM EDT reply actions
Not 2010
But 2011 picks would.
Could also be that the Mets are picking from a list of guys.
by guru4u on Jul 13, 2025 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions
No
PTBNLs have to be resolved within 6 months. Players signing their first contract can’t be traded until 1 year after they sign, so it’s too early for any of the 2011 draftees to be PTBNL.
More likely the players actually depend on performance.

I was not aware of the 6 month rule
But like I said, the Mets could be picking from a list of guys. Obviously peformance and scouting would be the 2 main factors on which guys they pick.
by guru4u on Jul 13, 2025 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
The 6 month rule was added when the A's did a PTBNL trade of their 1st round pick.
MLB squashed that practice before more teams started trading their “#1 picks” from that same season.

Late signs?
Anyone know if the Brewers signed any picks near the deadline last year? That would explain why they have to name them PTBNL, until the one year passes.

THIS
I’m guessing they’re looking at several guys in short season ball, on whom they might not yet have much good information this year. It’s not uncommon for that to happen in July deals. The Padres did it with Greg Maddux to the Dodgers and the players were announced two days after the SS leagues finished play.
by realitypolice on Jul 14, 2025 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Parnell will close
I don’t think he’ll be any good at it, but it worth a shot if you’re the Mets.
Tell Melvin to sign Gagnon, and get him.
by samjjones on Jul 13, 2025 7:22 AM EDT reply actions
For Parnell it all comes down to his slider
When he has command of it it’s one of the best in baseball. A slider that touches 90 with the movement he gets on it is sick. If he can consistently have command with that pitch he is more than capable and should excel even.
by emoofb on Jul 13, 2025 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
throw in the fact that he’s gone as high as 103 with his fastball… he could be great, if he can be consistent with both pitches.

Vest
This deal was ALL about avoiding the 17.5 mio $ vesting option for 2012 from the Mets perspective. By getting rid of K-Rod, the Mets now have 50+ mio $ off the books next winter they can re-invest in extending Reyes, plus fill out the roster in a smarter way than spending 15 % of the entire payroll on a good but not great closer.
The prospects involved will probably be a couple of 2nd tier prospects - probably P prospects with 90+ mph fastballs and projection but not a lot of hype.

first of all, that bad contract prevents “k”-Rod from being worth anything more than he is.
secondly…K-Rod just isn’t all that good.
