Discussion: Winning the Big Game
I ask variations on this question every year, but it always generates a good discussion.
Question: You are the Philadelphia Phillies and it is the Seventh Game of the World Series against the Boston Red Sox. You are at home in Philadelphia. To start the game, you have to pick one pitcher out of the minor leagues, from any organization, who has NEVER pitched higher than High-A. It cannot be someone drafted in 2011. Your bullpen is burned out, so you need this guy to actually pitch well: you can't pull some sort of stunt like having the guy pitch one inning and then bring in someone else. You do have your closer available, but the middle and long relief corps is depleted.
Who do you pick to start the game?

Taijuan Walker
He’s got plus stuff and good enough command where he could probably get through a lineup two plus times. He’s fairly polished and should give you as good a chance as anyone below AA.

I wouldn't throw Walker out there
I’d want an older, more advanced arm with good command. Command and pitchability are more important than raw stuff when making the immediate transition to the majors.
I’m thinking I would pick Sammy Solis. He hasn’t walked any batters in his last three outings.

unless you consider the AFL as above High-A ball. he started the champiopnship game last year

Chad Bettis
He’s pitched fantastic in the California League this season and has even been more impressive since the All-Star break: 8-1, 2.56 ERA, 1.58 GO, 87/19 K/BB.

I was thinking Walker also
Sampson
Nicolino
Syndergaard
Cabrera
Are all guys I’d considered, too.

Chris Hernandez (Salem)
Let me hit my logic, as hes hardly an elite prospect.
First, Innings, hes at 120ish, meaning hes probably got a little juice left in the arm if need be for a playoff appearance
Second, you want to, in this scenario, limit damage more then ask for a shut out/strike out guy. Hernadez is a lefty, and a pretty impressive ground ball pitcher (2.00 go/ao this year). The walks aren’t ideal, but they are hardly extreme, He is allowing an opposing BA of .213 with runners on. The Red Sox two best hitters, Ellsbury and Gonzalez hit significantly worse against lefties.
Point is, if Im the Phillies, Im not hoping for a brilliant debut by a stud flamethrower, Im looking for a guy that can go 6-7 innings, keep us close and hope that the offense can win it.

I'd take Trevor May
lefty with strikeout stuff would be my guy to trot out against a team who’s never seen him before. (plus he’s already in the system!)

Thats actually who I was thinking too.

Bettis or Workman
Chad Bettis has been great this year…
And I’d just have a hunch with Brandon Workman, I guess. Has the arm to go deep…and the Phillies wanted him 4 years ago! :-p
by BobbyS on Aug 31, 2025 10:48 AM EDT reply actions
I looked at Bettis as a righty option
but that 164 innings just scared me off. I’m hardly a “baby your pitchers” guy, but thats a big first year for a hard throwing college reliever, with a couple starts to go.
by ADLC on Aug 31, 2025 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed…. but if it’s in the 7th game, and his arm is feeling good, showed no real signs of fatigue… I’d have to consider him as an option
by BobbyS on Aug 31, 2025 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
My gut would still go with Workman….though you can make the case that he’s approaching his limit as well for his first year.
by BobbyS on Aug 31, 2025 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Always an interesting question, logically.
Do you want someone with the stuff to get MLB hitters out (Carlos Martinez) with the concern that he could blow up and walk the ball park? Or do you want someone who will strikes - a Gorski type.
Personally, I’ll take Martinez over the field. Best case he shuts them down, worst case you have to pull him after he blows up.

Would go with Nicolino from the Jays
The control is major league quality and i’d expect him to keep it relatively close.

Enny Romero, although his control could be an issue
he has the stuff that could challenge some hitters in the majors.

I can see taking Julio, though I’m not sure if his fastball command would hold up. I would probably go with Trevor May over him, because May has a special fastball with good command. I think he could good out there and hold his own for one game against batters who hadn’t seen him.
Another good candidate would be Jameson Taillon. He has more control than command at this point, but I think his stuff is good enough to keep an unfamiliar lineup off-balance.

i would throw trevor may because his dominance factor is off the charts and he can slow the sox down

Buckel...
But I am a Buckel homer (yet a Ranger-hater). I don’t see him going more than 5 or 6 innings though.
by Boxkutter on Aug 31, 2025 1:00 PM EDT reply actions
Jameson
Taillon.
He has the present fastball/curveball combo that if his command is solid that day he could get through 5 or 6 innings giving up only a few runs with a bit of luck.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Aug 31, 2025 1:48 PM EDT reply actions
I thought about him, but the problem is
How many times has Taillon gotten to 5 innings this year in the first place? I’m sure it’s not for lack of ability, but still.
by mrkupe on Aug 31, 2025 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Solid
point, but I’m assuming we’ve thrown caution to the wind as far as “protecting” his arm. Plus, he’s thrown more than 5 or 6 innings many, many times in high school, so I’m sure he could “last” 5 innings.
His arm would probably explode after, but whatever.
There are many great options though (great being a relative term); I’m sure a few might be better than Taillon.
Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend
by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Aug 31, 2025 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I wasn't concerned about the health factor, actually
Taillon hasn’t had the chance to go through a pro lineup three or four times on a consistent basis, and he’s mostly been a two pitch guy this year. I was taking it more from a performance perspective.
Indeed he threw more than 5-6 innings/start in high school, but that was high school. No comparison to any level of the minors, let alone the majors. The stress of pitching against pro competition, the low margin for error, the difficulty of the ABs the player has to work through, all of these things (among other factors) mean that 5 HS innings and 5 innings at any level of the pros are virtually incomparable.
If the exercise was to find a player who could work 1-3 innings, Taillon would have to be near or at the top of the list. But considering that we’re looking for a player who needs to be able to put up a quality outing of 5-7 innings, I think we need to look towards a player who has a more effective mix. Considering it’s an A ball pitcher, I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that the player we choose is capable of pitching at the peak of his ability every at bat. He’s going to get hit and he’ll probably make mistakes, so the key is to find a player who has decent stuff to get through once with the makeup, pitchability and/or pitch depth to compensate for the foreseeable situations in which things do not go as planned.

innings
Is there a player of recent memory who has been babied like Tailon this year? It is an honest question and I would like to know if there is anyone. He is a big, strong, healthy kid who should certainly be able to go 7. It is almost like they are developing him as a middle reliever.
by huztler on Sep 1, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Probably not the best canidate, but I think Jake THompson could do well.
Solid command, two plus pitches, and fairly polished. He doesn’t know how to strike guys out, but if he did, he would be past A+.

Zach Wheeler
with the new/ re found command recently could possibly get through the Sox lineup 2×.

my short list
You’re in Philly and Boston can hit, so you really need a player to keep the ball on the ground. NL park, so Ortiz plays 1B and Gonzalez plays RF. That leaves two OF slots open for Crawford, Reddick, Ellsbury. Ellsbury is obviously in, so that leaves a choice between Crawford or Reddick. Considering Crawford has been terrible against LH pitching this year, I’ll assume that if I start a LH pitcher, he will sit in place of Reddick. Starting a LH pitcher also takes some of Ellsbury’s bat away and makes Salty a zero. On the downside, Pedroia and Lowrie crush LH pitching. If I take a LHP (and I probably should), he absolutely must have a quality changeup. Pedroia will gladly work a walk, but let’s not give it to him and instead try to find a player who won’t just give up a free pass.
From where I’m sitting, the two guys who best fit the criteria would be Sammy Solis (WAS) and Edwar Cabrera (COL).

My chances of being on the mound in the seventh game of the WS this year are about the same as slumping LHH rookie Josh Reddick’s chances of being chosen to start in LF over Carl Crawford.
by Jim in NC on Sep 1, 2025 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Crawford has been absolutely wretched against LHPs this year
You can certainly slot him in if you’d prefer, but I wanted to act in good faith and go with the player that has been better against lefties.

I think Walker, Martinez, May are best picks
However, limiting myself to the Yankees, I would pick Jairo Heredia. Other than him, Brett Marshall or Nik Turley. But I think Heredia would be the best bet out of the Yankees organization.

3:1 SO/BB ratio, nice ERA, and nice average against(238).
Another Dodger, Garrett Gould. Already considered a major league breaking ball, even nicer ERA than Zach Lee, 37BB/101K ratio, and 219 average against.

Noah Syndergaard (coulda been Tyler Skaggs)
I started off looking for a power lefty to neutralize Gonzo and Big Papi, but did not find one that I really liked…So, then I went looking for a power arm with a high groundball rate because of the tiny confines in Philly. Syndergaard, who has had a fantastic year for TOR became my choice!

was contemplating Drew Hutchison, but realized he's now in E.L. (wow)
Trevoy May seems like one of the better options, along with J. Taillon but I’ll take Barrett Loux… (tex)
Nicolino (tor) is just 19 and just simply too raw.

He is a right-hander without plus stuff, which would make him a pretty bad fit against Boston.

Put me in the Taijuan Walker camp
He misses bats, controls the strike zone and gets groundballs, and has the stuff to give a big league lineup a challenge. Not much not to like other than the lack of experience.

How about
. . . Barrett Loux?
has more experience in bigger games than most these guys, having pitched in college.

I think it's more like it's hard to really see what would make him a "good" answer at this point
Perhaps we should chalk this year up to being a recovery year for him, and I have never been a huge fan, but I was expecting a guy with his profile and (perceived) stuff to do better than he has.
The biggest thing in his favor is that he’s had more big-game experience than your average A baller, but his command is still obviously meh. If you’re taking a guy with wild card command, you want a guy with big stuff . . .and is Ranaudo’s stuff comparable to or even better than the likes of a Carlos Martinez?
