2011 MLB All-Star Game Roster Review: Origins of National League Pitchers

Amateur Origins of the 2011 All Stars: Roster Review: National League Pitchers

Here is a summary of the 2011 National League MLB Roster, looking at where these players came from. This is the pitchers; we did the hitters yesterday.

Star-divide

PITCHERS
Heath Bell, San Diego Padres:
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Mets in 1998. Played at Santiago Canyon College.
Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants:
Drafted by the Giants in the 1st round in 2002 from Tennessee HS.
Tyler Clippard, Washington Nationals:
Drafted by the Yankees in the 9th round in 2003 from Florida HS.
Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies:
Drafted by the Blue Jays in the 1st round in 1995 from Colorado HS.
Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies:
Drafted by the Phillies in the 1st round in 1997 from California HS.
Joel Hanrahan, Pittsburgh Pirates: Drafted by the Dodgers in the 2nd round in 2000 from Iowa HS.
Jair Jurrjens, Atlanta Braves:
Signed by the Tigers in 2003 from Curacao.
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers:
Drafted by the Dodgers in 1st round in 2006 from Texas HS.
Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies: Drafted by the Expos in the 4th round in 2000 from University of Arkansas.
Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants:
Drafted by the Giants in the 1st round in 2006 from University of Washington.
Jonny Venters, Atlanta Braves: Drafted by the Braves in the 30th round in 2003 from Indian River JC.
Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants: Drafted by the Giants in 5th round in 1998 from Kutztown University.
Brian Wilson, San Francisco Giants: Drafted by the Giants in the 24th round in 2003 from Louisiana State University.

Of the 13 pitchers on the roster, only one was signed as an international free agent, from Curacao.  One was an undrafted free agent from North America. Six came from North American high schools, one from a junior college, and four from four-year colleges.

There are five first round picks. The lowest drafted was Jonny Venters in the 30th round, although Heath Bell wasn't drafted at all the year he signed. Bell had been drafted in 1997 in the 69th round by Tampa Bay, but didn't sign.

Adopted Giant: Jacob Dunnington. Will your team regret passing up on my boy 50 times?
