Enjoy.

Oh, and the Pirates had a dismal day for their farm system yesterday save for a solid start by Brad Lincoln. Basically the polar opposite after a great weekend.

Here’s hoping they bounce back today.

is he throw mid 90s again?

Just saw something on yahoo saying he is throwing 96 mph. I usually don’t put too much stock into what yahoo reports, but was wondering if anyone else has info on his velocity. If it indeed has gone up to the mid 90s, then I’m VERY intrigued by him.

Maybe this

will still some of the grumbling over his strikeout total. The guy hasn’t walked a batter in four starts and has a 38:4 K:BB in 42.2 IP (two of the walks came in his first appearance of the year). He has as many home runs allowed as walks right now. I knew the control was good, but wow.

by blackoutyears on Jun 15, 2025 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

I completely agree. Better strikeout numbers would be great, but you can be successful with lower (than desired) strikeout numbers if you don’t walk anybody. I’m not at all comparing them because Taillon has a long way to go, but refer to Cliff Lee’s success. Until this year, his strikeout numbers have been solid but not elite. His walk rate on the other hand has been elite.

Now, the issue with Taillon is his walk numbers suggest great control, but 38 hits in 38 IP, while not bad, shows he might need to refine his command inside the strikezone more. Still he’s young, has terrific stuff, and therefore has plenty of time to improve. As a Pirates fan he is exciting to watch.

Trout

trout is clearly an elite prospect. What do you think his upside is?
My guess is a little less power in the majors and Ellsbury like production.

by zeuspower on Jun 15, 2025 6:54 AM EDT up reply actions

better bat than Ellsbury

more power, methinks. Consistent 20 HR guy. Think Carl Crawford last year as Trout’s “normal” year and peak years probably 30-30.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jun 15, 2025 7:18 AM EDT up reply actions

So

We should expect a “normal” year for Trout to be a 7.5 WAR year? And possibly even better than that since he will be in CF?

I’m glad Trout is already a lock to be a hall of famer if that is a normal year of production for him

by brok515 on Jun 15, 2025 7:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Which part don't you expect him to live up to?

Crawford hit just over 300 and everyone expects Trout to be a 300 hitter, CC had 19 hrs and Trout is being projected for 20 to 25, and the slugging and obp are well within his reach.

If Trout wasn’t expected to put up HOF numbers in his prime years he probably wouldn’t be the number one prospect. There is a big difference anointing him as a future HOF, which no one is doing, and thinking he will put up those numbers in his prime.

by pedrophile on Jun 15, 2025 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

by billybeingbilly on Jun 15, 2025 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I went with the 7.5 WAR

because that is what Carl Crawford did last year according to fangraphs, and I was responding to the above post that said that Trout’s “normal seasons” would be like Crawford’s year last year.

That being said, I do agree with you that he COULD put up hall of fame type numbers and that is obviously a reason he is rated so highly. I just think it is foolish to expect him to be a “better version of Carl Crawford” as many have stated, because Crawford is very, very good. Could he be? Sure. But I would not expect such a thing.

by brok515 on Jun 15, 2025 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

That 7.5 figure is influenced by a very weak offensive year, isn't it?

I think the only thing wrong with that post was it should have stated ‘in his peak’ instead of ‘normal’.

Zack Cozart

1/5, 2B, .329

Why exactly are the Reds keeping him down in AAA with Janish/Renteria being such offensive liabilities. Cozart actually is a good defensive SS with a decent bat.

Cozart

1-5 is .200…he has some work to do

by Rupert Pupkin on Jun 14, 2025 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought Cozart was the Reds’ best option at SS at the beginning of LAST season, much less this one. I really don’t understand their reluctance to bring him up, especially in a year like this one where they really need the help and have a chance of competing. Makes zero sense at all.

by oplaid on Jun 15, 2025 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Look at the Giants

Not afraid to bring up Crawford at SS….and it’s not like Cozart is young. WHAT THE F*&% ARE THEY WAITING FOR!????

by Rupert Pupkin on Jun 15, 2025 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Cozart,

and have him on my bench, but he doesn’t have a history of hitting for this kind of average for any extended period and he still walks at a mediocre rate. I like the pop, and he sounds like a capable defender, but I think people who are clamoring for him and/or Mesoraco to be pressed into service are ignoring the realities of putting those guys into crucial positions on a contending team.

by blackoutyears on Jun 15, 2025 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

The reality is the Reds have gotten -0.5 WAR at SS so far this season

People are not clamoring for Mesoraco because Hernandez and Hanigan have combined for decent production this season, 2.0 WAR total.

Renteria and Janish? Pathetic. Cozart only has to be replacement level to IMPROVE their team!

The reality is not using your best SS could cost the Reds the division this season, in a year where both the Brewers and Cardinals look to be very strong.

by oplaid on Jun 15, 2025 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

That's fine,

except it’s not a fantasy team. There’s more to replacing a SS than just calling a guy up and benching the current one. I’m not saying they shouldn’t, I’m just saying it’s not as simple as replace and submit. Same goes with C, which is why I brought up Mesoraco. This is not the same thing as replacing Gomes for instance.

I don’t think that the season hinges on who’s playing SS. It’s one factor among many. Why not complain about Rolen, and what we’re getting from him? Why not worry about the early season stress on the bullpen, and the implications of that later in the year? Laying the success of the team on Renteria and Janish is pretty simplistic.

by blackoutyears on Jun 15, 2025 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't think he's "Laying the success of the team on Renteria and Janish"

he’s merely pointing out that Cozart stands a real good chance of being better than them right now, and even a chance at being much much better.

by daveh33 on Jun 15, 2025 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

"The reality is not using your best SS could cost the Reds the division this season"

Yeah, doesn’t sound like he’s laying the success of the team on Renteria and Janish at all. Reading is for suckas… lol

I like Cozart, and he’s hitting, like, .500 for June, so there’s no doubt he’s hot. I’ve had the guy on my bench all year; it’s not like I’m not invested in his being promoted. I’ve also followed him since the Reds drafted him, so I’ll reserve judgment before buying that a career ~.265 hitter is suddenly a .300 hitter, especially as he was 0 for April and is maintaining the same mediocre 45-50 point spread between his avg and OBP that he’s always posted outside of the standout Double-A season.

Question

in fantasy, would you rather have Cozart or Reese Havens on your bench?

by Rupert Pupkin on Jun 14, 2025 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Cozart

SS is harder position to fill, and Cozart will put up numbers that will make him a Top 10 SS. Havens is injury prone, and 2B is a deeper position these days. Also, Cozart will have the luxury of playing half his games in a bandbox that can give him 20 homer upside.

I've been notoriously low on Alvarez from the beginning.

he has a lot of work to do… not sure he’s gonna do it.

and Beckham is now a consensus top 50 prospect, and still playing SS, and still very young for AA… remember just a few months ago when people were still slamming Friedman for picking Beckham over Alvarez?

that’s all I’m saying… and Posey… idk, I guess people think he will come back the same or near to where he was.

by daveh33 on Jun 15, 2025 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

and Beckham is now a consensus top 50 prospect

WTF did I miss? His stats are solid, but nothing spectacular.

.306/.363/.429
.122 ISO again solid, but not spectacular

His .306 average is bolstered by a .374 BABIP, which is ~.40 higher than his average over the past two years.

A 22:53 BB:K rate over 272 PA’s is again solid, but nothing to write home about. That translates to a 8.1% BB rate, a 21.6% K rate, and a .42 BB/K rate, that last statistic being down from last year.

He’s stolen 6 bases to 3 CS, so while he may provide some value on the basepaths, he won’t be a terror on them.

I’ve also read numerous reports that his tools either haven’t developed as expected (or hoped) or that they were overblown and hyped as he entered the draft. One thing going for him is he’s relatively young - 21 years old playing at AA - but at the same time he’s not incredibly young.

To me, he seems to be a guy who’s below-average to above-average in about everything, who tempts because he still has some tools, but mainly he’s hanging onto his #1 draft pick pedigree.

I think the 100-150 range is more appropriate than the top 50 range, but that’s my opinion. While Alvarez has looked very ugly, he’s produced at the major league level and it’s a fact he does have the tool everyone hyped him for having out of college: power. That power may not matter if he can’t ever make contract, and thus Pedro could still be bust, but he could also bust out.

Also, Beckham is still playing SS, but if he has to move at the big league level, he probably becomes a super-utility guy, and there is no guarentee he can stick at SS. I don’t mean this in a rude or condescending way, but you need to slow down there buddy. In a year and a half your opinion may be vindicated, but right now Beckham’s not a top 50 guy.

Yeah I agree

He wouldn’t be close to my Top 50, and I doubt he would be on many experts lists either. Not sure where the “consensus” is coming from

by brok515 on Jun 15, 2025 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I've heard it elsewhere

failing to recall an exact source… but if he isn’t, then he is just getting snubbed because the “experts” might be afraid to admit to their wrongs so quickly.

hey, here’s a fun game that I’ve posted before… guess which wOBA belongs to the guy the Yankees are going to trade for Felix Hernandez, and guess which wOBA belongs to the guy who was Friedman’s biggest mistake ever.

.324 and .347 … they aren’t even close now that Montero’s BABIP has normalized to the still kinda high .364 range/// and Beckham has caught him at .378, so he might be due for a bit of regression as well, but if he is not on top 50s after this year, then its not his fault.

by daveh33 on Jun 15, 2025 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You also fail...

to note that Montero is having a dismal season by his standards and Beckham is having by far his best, and that they are a level apart, and that Montero has an excellent track record with some scouts saying he has 80 power potential.

Listen, I think I failed to get across the point before that I think Beckham is a fine prospect, and he could indeed succeed at the major league level. But I believe Beckham’s upside is more of a solid regular whereas Montero’s upside is as a well above average player who could make some all star games.

I personally don’t see many indicators in Beckham’s statistical success that he can be more than a solid regular, but if you have anything that could help change my mind, I’d like to hear about it from someone who clearly knows more about him than me

by brok515 on Jun 15, 2025 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

And you fail to note that Beckham has finally started maturing.

I’ll take a solid (if not better which I firmly believe it will be) bat at SS over a great bat at DH anyday.

by mr. maniac on Jun 15, 2025 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

why would you do that?

a great bat for one position is clearly more valuable than a good bat at another position

Fire Everyone

by billybeingbilly on Jun 15, 2025 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

not necessarily

Montero will have to hit so much more as a DH than Beckham will have to hit in the MIF to be “above average”

and to brok,
Montero is trending down.
Beckham is trending up.

I have no problem with HS/raw players showing steady improvement while maintaining great ARL. I am more wary of guys that seemingly hit brick walls before they hit MLB pitching. not that Montero is hitting a brick wall, but he is certainly way off his norm and really not showing the one thing he supposedly has, which is power. I actually wonder if he might be concealing injury

I think you are still reading the 2010 reports on Beckham. And as someone who has seen him both years now, little has changed except some weight loss. Makes me really question scouts….

everyone keeps reading old reports and scouts/experts/publications are offering little else but what groupthink they acquired back when Beckham reported to camp “fat” in 2009. its kinda pathetic, really

I’ve got Beckham has a solid “B” right now, which puts him in the 75-150 range for my list generally. Can’t see a B+ yet, (30-75) but I’d agree that he could get there.

So,

Posey was/is a worse draft pick than Beckham because he got hurt? Tim Beckham: better than Strasburg! lol

And I’m with everyone else: the “consensus Top 50” thing is weird. I’m trying to think of what “source” could even tell you what the consensus is.

by blackoutyears on Jun 15, 2025 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

You're way ahead

of yourself if you think that what Beckham is doing now somehow brings him close to what Posey has accomplished. I don’t think any comparison to Posey flatters Beckham.

Mariners.

AAA
Ackley 2-4, BB, SB… still in Tacoma.
Liddi 1-5
Saunders 0-3, 2BB, 1SO

Saunders has become officially weird. I don’t know if he’s AAAA at this point or what. He’s a legit solid CF and a left handed bat, so I’d hate to see him classified as replacement level scrub at this point, but I don’t see any alternative. He is using a new swing mechanic so it may just be a matter of time for him to figure it out, but for now, huge disappointment.

AA affiliate had the day off

A+
Catricala 1-4 - season line is now .373 / .436 / .614. I’d declare this a High Desert Mirage except that his road line is still a respectable .361 / .409 / .546. That 16% K rate seems to indicate that he’s at least an above average contact hitter. He’s posted .300+ averages at every stop so far. He’s 22, so he could still develop some power yet and with his contact rate he could become an interesting 3B prospect.

A
Nothing interesting in Clinton to report.

Apparently the Mariners have already inked 20 of their draft picks. Including 10th rounder Dan Paolini.

Fans are typically idiots.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 15, 2025 2:26 AM EDT reply actions

Saunders

maybe I have a soft spot for him but I still have some faith in him, however I don’t have much faith in the M’s to really develop hitting talent. In ‘09 he looked quite good, some struggles at the mlb level as they try and rework his swing…. which should of taken place in AAA from the start imo. Too early to say about his AAA stats this year I think, showing great eye/patience, lately the k’s have gone down (SSS). If he can continue that while showing his pop and getting more comfortable with his swing I’d say he has a chance.

5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 8 K

Still struggling with his command. Looks like they are having him work on throwing his curve for strikes. He can get by mainly as a FB/CH guy in the minors but will need to have a reliable breaking ball if he wants to reach his ceiling.

Yes, I know it was the Padres but he handled Rizzo no problem who had a rough evening 0 - 4 w/ 3 k.
Also Blackmon 2 - 4 w/ 2 bagger gets avg up to .290.

I believe the MLEs show that 9K against the Padres translate to about 5.5 against major league lineups.

2-for-2 with a HR and 2 BBs yesterday, puts him at .472/.578/1.056 over his last 10 games, and .318/.426/.570 overall

I haven’t heard much about this 23-year old second baseman in the Padres system, but he’s tearing up AA and has hit everywhere he’s been. Can anyone tell me anything about him?

by PissedMick on Jun 15, 2025 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

Late round pick out of West Virginia in 09, he was solid enough out in short-season ball that they decided to jump him ahead to the Cal League to fill a roster positional need on the theory that he might be able to hang in, and if not, it was no big loss for the organization. They had drafted him as a 2B and recognized that’s his best position, but didn’t really have any other warm bodies to stand at the hot corner when Darnell was deemed ready to open in Double-A.
He’s always seen a ton of pitches per plate appearance (hence the crazy walk and high K numbers in Elsinore last year), and his primary offensive assignment this year was to be more aggressive when he gets his pitch. His K rate and BB rate have dropped slightly this year, but his ISO has spiked even with the transition from the Cal League to TL. He says he made a few tweaks in his swing load this offseason.
The other major change this year - much to the relief of pitchers in San Antonio - is that he’s moved off 3B. He’s playing mostly second, but has picked up starts at 1B over the last three weeks (having never played the position at any level before that). His future is almost certainly as a utility guy, so being a LHH is a plus for him, but he’s the kind of guy who, if an injury situation provides an opening, just might turn it into a starting role for a second-tier team for a while.
He’s certainly moved up from being “the other Mountaineer” in the Padres’ infield ranks…

by realitypolice on Jun 15, 2025 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Thanks.

I figured the defense was suspect, since I haven’t heard him discussed as a prospect. Even a future as a utility guy is a pretty big success for a 29th rounder.

by PissedMick on Jun 15, 2025 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

28th… but the point remains true.
That San Antonio roster (which is the same core that set all sorts of MWL records together two years ago) includes a few nice late-round picks. Most notably, 42nd-rounder Brad Brach will almost certainly log some important bullpen innings, and Danny Robertson (33rd in 08) has a decent chance to get some big league service time.
