If you can
Please report on his stuff both early in the game and late in it. Specifically I would like to know if he is losing movement on his pitches, which ones he loses life on, and whether he loses command of his pitches and again which ones.

Montgomery’s stuff, again, good, but command was pretty bad. i wouldn’t be surprised if he scrapped the curve and went to a slider at some point. sustained fastball entire outing until pulled in the 4th. 91-94 for the most part.
Moose looked good. two singles and two deep fly ball outs to left center. defense is good too. seriously there should be no worries about this guy playing 3B. he’s fine there. Cain and Lough hit the ball hard multiple times too. both are ready if needed i think.

Question
At what point do Charlie “Xtra Base Hit” Blackmon & David Lough get a shot in MLB?
Is it simply a wait til June thing, especially for Charlie?
Come on Rockies… Ryan Spilborghs - REALLY?

by Jersey Transplant on May 24, 2025 10:54 AM EDT reply actions
If Blackmon
is still doing this in a month he has to get a look. He’s on a 12-game hit streak, and you might consider the nickname “Multi-hit”, as nine of those games had two or more knocks. He’s been pretty consistent at each level and garnered good AFL reviews, so I’m sure COL has him firmly on their radar. Between him and Wheeler they’ve got some interesting options.

Keyvius Sampson v Drew Hutchison this evening in Lansing. I’d love a scouting report on Hutchison if anyone has something as his numbers intrigue me.
Mike Montgomery goes against Will Inman in Omaha.
Inman’s K rates are back, but he still walks way to many. He had that one truly horrendous start early in Salt Lake, but has otherwise been solid-ish… He seems like he should be a LOT older than 24!

Sampson: 6.1IP 6H 1ER 4K/0BB Balk; HBP
The run scored after he left the game with the guy on first and one out. It’s just the second time this year he’s lasted more than five innings, and first he’s gone into the seventh.

seems like a lot of balks/HBPs from him this year?
by pickapeppa on May 25, 2025 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s essentially 3BB/9IP and a bit over 3:1 K:BB ratio. More walks than you’d want, but certainly what you can live with from a young guy who’s still refining his stuff with <100 professional innings pitched.
by realitypolice on May 25, 2025 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant HBPs and balks not walks. Looks like I was thinking of other pitchers because that was his first balk, but it is his fourth HBP in 47 IP. Not important I know just semi-interesting IMO.

Rotowire via MLB.com write Ken Gurnick reports Rubby De La Rosa is going to be promoted to the Majors to help out in the bullpen, with thoughts of limiting his innings. Story below:

ugh
Really, worried about limiting his innings already? He needs innings as a developing starter. This is a shortsighted move imo. It may not be in the same vein as jenrry and cashner, but it is still unwise to retard the development of a possible ace…especially at this point of the year.

But a potential frontline starter to a solid set up man, is the definition of not working out. I don’t think its a death sentence to a starters development, but it adds risk imo.

Went 3 for 4, singled three times, walked, swiped another bag, played a flawless Shortstop.
The Korean Jose Reyes leads the FSL in average, .374 and in getting on base, .441. he is also slugging .525 in a league that slugs .381.
He also has blazing speed and is a terrific fielder at Short. Besides being the BEST player in the FSL he is also the third youngest, behind Wilmer Flores and Jon Singleton.
I think he has a case for being one of the ten best prospects in the game today and, he was the consensus 84th best prospect before the season started - a complete WHIFF by the prospecting community.

Along the same lines
Jon Singleton is completely overrated and could probably use a demotion. I have been beating this drum since last season but he only really hit well for 1.5 months. Granted that was a killer 1.5 months but he was awful in the second half and a 1b that has bat questions is not a top 50 prospect.

He's certainly struggling
But I’m not sure what they’d have to gain by demoting him. I don’t know what his issues are this year (perhaps pitchers have learned that he’ll chase high fastballs?), but I do think he’s going to hit eventually.

BA had a piece on him the other day
It’s protected so I’ll selectively quote:
On his defense:
“He’s fair at best. He’ll be OK,” the scout said. “He’s not a bad athlete—he’s just not a good athlete. He’s a first baseman playing left field. He went to his knees on a couple of balls he didn’t need to, but having Jiwan James in center field covers up some of his errors.”
On his offensive struggles:
“Some guys go 0-for-4 where you can see they are beat after the first strikeout of the day,” the scout said. “He could go 0-for-12 and think he’s the best hitter there.”
The scout meant that as a compliment. He believes Singleton’s confidence and his simple swing will allow him to turn things around.

Suffice it to say that I disagree with the scout. Admittedly I’ve only watched limited video on him — but his OPS over the last year or so is somewhere around .700. For a guy to go from doing that at LowA / HiA to being a useful player at the MLB level (at a COF or 1B no less) would be a pretty big surprise.

He’s 19 years old. You can be skeptical since he’s limited defensively (that’s a position I take often), but to make that statement, especially when it’s statistically based, is something I strongly disagree with.

Casey Harman - 3 shutout relief, 2 K’s. Since being called up to Low A, the former Clemson Tigers Friday night starter has tossed 15.2 innings giving up only 1 unearned on 8 h, 1 bb, 15 K’s. Granted, polished college arm in Low A. Still disappointed the Cubs aren’t pondering him in the rotation, by all indications.

Peoria Chiefs
I should go watch a game. I live about 20 minutes from thier stadium. Any suggestions on a good game coming up to go see?

um
let’s see, they are facing the lugnuts soon, who have a solid squad in terms of prospect talent for the level, from what i know of the blue jays system. but that’s on the road … let’s see …. they face the kane county cougars (royals) late in June, and Royals tend to have solid talent down at that level …
as for P-Chiefs to see, on the pitching side, if i was to see anyone, i’d try to line up a trip with a dallas beeler start. it’s not that he’s blowing guys away at that level right now, but he’s got a pretty high ceiling. austin kirk, if he’s still there, is another guy, although his ceiling is a bit limited, relatively speaking. One thing to note is that they Cubs do piggyback, so any starter you see will likely only get 4 or 5 innings.

Tim Melville with a nice night
5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K
He has strung together a few nice starts. When he’s on he is great - consistent command is the key for him.

he's got silly stuff
when he’s on. yet, he needs LOTS of seasoning.

yeah
it is Low-A, so expectations should be tempered a bit. But he’s exceeded EVERYTHING that I’d thought he’d do.

It's low A but he turned 18 a few months ago
He is showing a lot of patience and hitting an absolute ton of extra base hits. I fully expect him to be in the conversation for top 10 by seasons end.

He's doing very well, indeed
but top ten might be pushing it, especially with the strong draft class coming in. All the scouting reports say his present skills and baseball acumen are great, but his ceiling is still not sky high. I wonder what those reports will say at year end, but if his ceiling is “just” starter on a first division team that’s top 50 for sure, maybe top 25, but not top 10.

I think the scouting reports will change
Here is an example:Bautista for the Jays always had 80 power in batting practice, you can read an interview with JP Ricciardi on this. And yet how many scouting reports ever mentioned this? Maybe they thought the hitch in his swing wasn’t fixable. Or maybe we are just getting the wrong info from some of the scouts? We typically get snippets of what a scout actually said.
Remember the scouting said he wouldn’t have power? He is on pace for around 90 extra base hits for a 160 game season. I think the kid has plenty of power.

Your point about the draft class has merit though.
Top 10 just before they get signed ;)

Heh
even now, though, Jason Parks and Jason Cole, two high quality observers that follow the Rangers system very closely, both say they’d rank Olt just ahead of Profar right now. No one thinks Olt is a top 10 prospect.

I can't see putting Olt higher than Profar
then again Parks gave Profar a glowing writeup in 2010 and said we was a top 100 prospect. I was surprised he didn’t rank him higher. And many of the questions on Profar have been answered. Again I’m surprised Parks isn’t ranking him higher.
Anyways, if he keeps up the numbers many will definitely see him around the top 10. Especially since some players will get promoted.

2 more good starts
Jordan Lyles & Casey Kelly.
Lyles now has a 3.20 ERA for the year. Low BBs. He could strike out more guys, but you can’t argue with his success, and he’s 20 years old and pitching in AAA.

I'll take
“Games I’m glad I didn’t witness” for $2000 please Alex
Tulsa: 14 12 6
Midland 13 14 4
This masterpiece also featured 14 walks, 3 wild pitches, 4 HBP.
And it was 93 degrees. And in Midland.
But, there was a triple play!
