You're the GM! Minnesota Twins Edition

After awakening from a soul-tearing nightmare where you were the new general manager of the Orioles, you calm yourself down, take half an ambien, and go back to sleep. This time, you dream that you are the newly-appointed general manager of the Minnesota Twins.

What is your plan here? Is this team in need of a complete re-build, or did they just get hit by a bunch of bad luck in 2011?  Are you going to rely on Joe Mauer behind the plate, or will you move him to another position and find another catcher?  What will you do at first base if Justin Morneau can't regain his pre-injury form? Will you make an attempt to keep any of the potential free agents?

What is your draft strategy? High school? College? Mixed? Will you stick with the present organizational philosophy focused on control pitching?

How soon do you think you can return this team to full competitiveness in the AL Central? And how committed are you to Ron Gardenhire as manager? Is it time for a new approach?

Draft Strategy

This by no means is intended to be a holistic strategy; rather I intend to just look at one aspect of the team that—as a lifelong Minneapolis resident, part-time writer, and someone who has watched a solid 5/7ths of every Twins season since 1985—I’ve noticed seems to not be producing its intended outcomes: the draft.

This certainly could be a longer, more well-researched piece, but I don’t want to go all out. Instead, this is merely just some questions I’ve had from watching the draft over the last few years that I wanted to ask to maybe flesh out these thoughts.

First: drafting moldable command/control guys. Can we say this has really worked out well? What percentage of top picks have not only made it to the majors, but lasted more than three seasons with a defensible FIP? Especially when one considers the alternates at picks. It can be argued that teams like TB and Texas additionally are targeting pitchers heavily, so why are their systems so much better?

Second: an almost aversion to drafting HS power/BA combos. I can’t think of a positional player with this combo that has come out of the draft for the Twins in the last five years who has sustained production.

Third: overslot talent. I never see the Twins take risks here and spend in the draft when the opportunity presents itself. I understand we are small market, but that means you still don’t take risks, ever.

Fourth: increased Latin presence. I’ll admit, this is definitely a strong point for the Twins, and not-specifically draft related, but is still a legitimate pipeline of talent into the majors. Should the Twins spend a lot more in foreign signings considering their aversion to signing homegrown talent to large deals?

It would be great to see them attempt to lead in spending in the majors on acquiring Latin—and other foreign talent. It’s fairly clear that the Wild West age of non-draft signees will continue for a bit, and it only makes sense that there would be a proportional amount of baseball talent in the rest of the world to that of a single country. Whatever we are doing here needs to be increased, though not at the risk of damaging what they are already doing. Sustained growth, not just explosive spending.

first point clarification

I’m specifically talking about frontline starters here.

by bloodface on Nov 9, 2025 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve only recently followed the draft and as a Buccos fan, I’ve actually read a little bit on the Twins approach on how to get a smaller market team to competitive status. I’d argue you guys are doing fine in Latin America (sigh…Sano), but it seems that there is a draft strategy here and it seems like its toolsy OF or command/control guys. Now I don’t profess to know tons about the Twins draft strategy, but from an outsider’s perspective, thats what it looks like.
I’d really like to see them take more chances on arms, and of the more high-octane variety. You need power arms just like you need power bats. The command/control guys may have less of a chance of flaming out, but you also kind of know where they’re going too. Basically, it seems the Twins have hit on a good formula (for them, at least) to get competitive. Now the hard part is figuring out how to STAY there. I kind of think they have to alter their strategy somewhat to achieve that goal.

by NastyNate82 on Nov 9, 2025 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Slight disagreement

Power arms are fine but there is nothing wrong with command/control guys either. Good pitchers, of either type, are needed. There’s no evidence (that I’ve seen) that suggests that pitchers perform much differently in the postseason then they do in the regular season. Obviously, command/control guys are more reliant on defense but command control guys like Maddux, Buerhle, Radke (more 5 WAR seasons than Josh Beckett) can win for you in the postseason, too. And, while power arms don’t rely as much on defense (although they still do, esp when their control is a bit off), they are generally more expensive both to sign and to keep.

by Gunnarthor on Nov 10, 2025 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying guys with command/control

can’t win in the postseason. I’m saying more that it might help to get more of a mix of command/control guys and those who can miss bats. You’re right, the command/control guys aren’t sexy, but I also think its better to have a little more variety.

by NastyNate82 on Nov 11, 2025 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

quick reply

1) TB and Texas had losing records for a decade. Twins have been drafting in the back of the 1st round for a decade. I’m not sure they’ve missed on a lot of power arms. Command/control guys have given the Twins lots of value. Sure, it’s not sexy, but it works.
2) Not really sure what you’re getting at. Sorry.
3) The Twins have gone over slot a lot under Smith (not sure if they’ll change with Ryan). They went over slot on both Boyd and Harrison in this years first round, Gibson two years ago and a lot more in lower rounds.
4) I’m happy with their efforts internationally, even if the Nishi move was terrible. Kepler is an intriguing prospect, we have a bunch of Aussies and we’re doing a really good job scouting Puerto Rico (even though those guys are drafted).

Generally, I’d like to see the Twins put even more money into draft/development then they have but I do think draft honcho Johnson has had some solid drafts (we won’t know for another few years. His first draft was 08, the 06 crew (Parmelee and Benson) just showed up. Usually, the Twins drafts have been graded fairly well but draft followers.

by Gunnarthor on Nov 10, 2025 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

I think 2012 is an answering questions year.

Not quite rebuilding, but not quite competing either unless everything works out well. I’m focusing on gathering information on which to make the decisions to make this team competitive from 2013-18.

What happens to Justin Morneau and Denard Span post-injury? Can Trevor Plouffe and Luke Hughes be big league infielders? Can Ben Revere find another level that will make him a useful outfielder? Is Joe Mauer going to be able to continue catching most of the time? Is Liam Hendriks going to work out? Can Kevin Slowey thrive when given the chance?

I’m saving money to spend on next year’s big free agent class. I’m picking up some one-year contracts of guys who can be moved at the deadline. I’m looking for the best time to trade Francisco Liriano. I’m hoping to find something really great with the #2 draft pick. I’m not averse to drafting one or more of the Twins-type college control guys in the supplementary or later rounds, but I also need to see some high-upside talent somewhere. I’d like to get someone close to ready with #2, and someone with upside around the Sano/Arcia timeline with one of whatever other high picks I end up with.

And yeah, I dump Gardy and go to a two-manager system, one for personnel and one for tactics. This is way overdue in the league in general.

Rebuild

1. Offer Cuddyer arbitration and bankm the draft picks
2. Find a taker for Pavano and bank the bucks
3. Find a catcher so Mauer can play a full season (Yankees?)
4. Take a long look at Liriano’s MRI with Dr Job. Keep him if he is clean trade him if any doubts
5.Give Parmalee, Plouffe, Benson, Hughes, Hicks & Revere at least 350 at bats and find out if they can play
6. Get Span a clean bill of health and trade hime to the highest bidder (Mets?)
7. Get a clean bill of health on Mourneau or make a settlement with him or the insurance company
8. Find out what all the young starters can get you. Trade only if you are overwhelmed.

by Jerseyguy6 on Nov 9, 2025 10:19 PM EST reply actions

Nice

1) agree
2) Disagree. We don’t have a lot of starters who can pitch 200 innings (we might not have many who can pitch 160). Getting rid of Pavano, esp for salary relief, is not a good idea. I might listen at the deadline, though.
3) Agree backup catcher is huge.
4) I don’t think Liriano has much trade value at this point.
5) Don’t think Hicks is ready for MLB yet. Benson could use some time at AAA first. I’m not really that high on either Hughes or Plouffe, both are old for prospects. I’d be happy if Hughes took the 2b job next year but Plouffe might be a man without a position.
6) Agreed. His concussion scares me. Too bad.
7) Hopefully he heals but if he doesn’t, I think the Twins are stuck with his salary.
8) Agreed, although there isn’t much.

by Gunnarthor on Nov 10, 2025 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

My first thought on #3 was that, in addition to the Yankees, the Nationals would be a good fit

They have as much depth in their system at catcher as any team this side of the Bronx. But obviously that is very much on hold while everyone prays for Wilson Ramos’s safe return. Awful situation.

by d_c_guy on Nov 10, 2025 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Twins

I would stick with the control pitching philosophy. It is true that those types of pitchers are under-valued on the market. It’s just really, really boring to watch. If an opportunity comes up where I can trade for a good pitcher that isn’t necessarily a low-velocity/high-contact guy, I would explore that though, as long as its the right price.
Their current team really isn’t that bad. I would probably go for the high ceiling guys in the draft right now.
I like what Ron is doing, and would keep for at least another year.

1. Trade Denard Span to somebody (Marlins? Nationals?) I like Ben Revere. He has zero power, but his defense is sooo good. Span is probably a bit underrated, but I think he would attract a lot of interesting if put on the trade block. I think he has hit his ceiling, which is something like .265/.330/.355. Teams might still hope to hit that 2009 form.
2. Convert Mauer to a right fielder. His bat is just too valuable to only get 400 PA’s a year. You need to keep him healthy.
3. Hope Morneau regains his form. I think he will put up something closer to his old numbers next year. One bad year should not change a players value. I think he can hit .270/.340/.460 next year.
4. Don’t resign any free agents. Any of them probably be a bad move. I doubt the Twins can contend next year, and all of the impending free agents are already entering their decline.
5. Cross your fingers Chris Parmelee wasn’t a fluke. Obviously, his .390 BABIP will go down, but with an ISO of .237 and a K rate of 14.8%, I can still see him hitting for an acceptable offense. I would put him on the opening day roster as a 1B/DH, and expect something like .255/.320/.400.
6. Trade for Angel Pagan. The outfield defense might need some time to get going with Mauer out there for the first time, so improving left field should be a priority. He is a nice candidate for a rebound, and should be able to hit .275/.325/.390, while providing one of the best corner outfield defense in the game.
7. Go after cheap starting pitching (Chris Volstad, Ricky Nolasco, Jeff Francis, Chris Capauno)
8. Search for a catcher. All of these seem unlikely, but I would call about Matt Wieters, Carlos Santana, Yasmani Grandal, Devin Mesoraco, Wilin Rosario. Try to trade top prospects for one. Again, highly unlikely, but at least worth looking into. If none of them are open, sign Ramon Hernandez.
9. If Francisco Liriano has a good first half, put him on the trade block. Maybe this is a time Grandal, Mesoraco, Rosario would be available.
10. Target Taylor Green, Kyle Seager, Travis Snider, Mike Carp, and Colin Cowgill at the trade deadline.

C: Ramon Hernandez
1B: Justin Morneau
2B: Alexi Casilla
SS: Tsuyoshi Nishioka
3B: Danny Valencia
LF: Angel Pagan
CF: Ben Revere
RF: Joe Mauer
DH: Chris Parmelee

Carl Pavano
Scott Baker
Chris Capauno
Francisco Liriano
Kevin Slowey

the only prospects that would seem to bring back any decent return are Sano, Rosario, Arcia, Benson, and Gibson. Gibson’s hurt, Sano & Rosario should be untouchable. I’d deal Arcia and Benson for what I can get right now - Arcia is a DH in the making, and Benson will be a poor man’s Chris B. Young.

Defense wins championships

This team is one year removed from 94 wins. This season was a perfect storm of underperformance and injuries plaguing a team. If, and it’s a big if this team can stay healthy and performances regress to the mean they could be right there again. That said there will be some big changes overall due to free agency and players getting older.

C: Mauer and . . Sign Ryan Doumit to a 2 year deal w/option . . . maybe the next Mike Napoli?

1B: Morneau, Doumit, Mauer

MI: Casilla and . . . I think you consider a trade here for an upgrade. Barmes while alright is getting a little old so he’s not my first option. I look to trade with the Nationals (Espinoza, Lombardozzi, Desmond) or with the Sox for Lowrie. Not sure what it would take but I think the Nats might be interested in Revere.

3B: Valencia

OF: I let Cuddy and Kubel walk to collect the picks so I’m left with Span, Revere and sign DeJesus.

DH: Consider bringing back Kubel here but not likely unless . . .

SP: Trade Pavano, he’s pitched 440 innings at just over a 4.00 ERA over the past 2 seasons. His peripherals dropped this past year, he was arguably the Twins only consistent pitcher in that he made his starts and wasn’t horrible. However I expect a larger dropoff this year and some team looking for a solid backend starter might give up something decent for him in this poor pitching market. Replace him with Slowey/Swarzak/Hendriks

RP: I move Duensing back to the pen to shore it up and I consider bringing Capps back on a 2 year deal as his value is very low. If that doesn’t happen I consider Nathan on a 2 year deal but pay him no more that 5-6 M per year. If neither of those work out I look at bringing in one legit RH reliever to team with Perkins and Duensing to help solidify the 8-9th innings.

Depending on how things play out I strongly consider bringing in either Pena or Kotchman as a backup 1B/DH guy. (say if Kubel says no or they get a lesser backup Catcher than Doumit). Both give a backup option to Morneau and could be decent options at DH (too bad they’re lefties)

Part of the point is to increase defense and hope that this coincides with the healthy return of Span/Mauer/Morneau.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Nov 10, 2025 2:01 AM EST reply actions

I like the Doumit signing, and think they actually might do it...

but I wouldn’t him behind the plate for more than 30-40 games. I would certainly get another backup catcher along the mold of Blanco/Butera, for defensive purposes.

Sweet...post topic John S.!!! this is right up my alley {halfchest as well :) }

John, before i say what i envision. I would really like it if you gave you’re piece on what you would do if you were “GM for a day”

But as for me,
1) I fire Bill Smith Actuality : DONE
2. Keep Joe Mauer at catcher at least for another season, Although He must DH/ 1B at least 40-50 games to keep him in the lineup at least 150 out of 162. Actualiy : DONE (I believe so)

3. Trade Trevor Plouffe, Anthony Swarzak, Jose Mijares and Kevin Slowey to the Rays for Reid Brignac and Adam Russell or B. Gomes. (The Rays need OF/UTL type , plouffe. They also will need a starter , slowey. After they deal Wade Davis and possibly but unlikely James Shields., Nieman could go to relief. (it may take another actual prospect (mid-level) to pry Brignac away; whose Defense fits in VERY well for the Twins at SS, and he’d bat 9th.

4. Let Cuddyer , Capps WALK - Get draft picks for them , well only Cuddyer because the Twins won’t offer Capps arbitration.

5. Re-Sign Nathan (for cheaper) and Kubel (for More) to Set-Up/Close and RF/DH.

6. KEEP THE DRAFT PHILOSIPHY AS IS…… Therefore, I expect a college arm to go #2 overall, and FOR ONCE THE FRICKIN TWINS are picking HIGH enough to take a “high leverage arm” / high velocity guy. LET ME ASK ALL YOU THE QUESTION how often does a team that picks in the 20’s consistantly in round 1 get the chance to take a Verlander/ Kimbrel/ JIminez/ Andrew Miller type Fast-ball heater? - Not nearly as often!!!!!!!!!!!!! "OHHHHHHH "

7. SIgn a reliable catcher Like a Pudge Rodriguez, or Kelly Shoppach, Rod Barajas or Ryan Doumit (injury prone) to play a large handfull of games.

8. Sign Michael Wuertz, and either Octavio Dotel or David Aardsma, or (mini dream) John Broxton.

9. Sign Jonny Gomes to play COF and occasionaly DH along with being the RH bench bat with some pop.

10. Sign Hishasi Iwakuma to a reasonable 3 yr. deal (and Hope he and Nishioka along with Rori Ishikowa get things going)

Most all FA’s are 1 year deals.

C - Mauer (3rd)
1B - Morneau/ Parmelee (6th)
2B - Casilla (2nd)
SS - Brignac (9th)
3B - Valencia (7th)
LF - Revere (8th)
CF - Span (1st)
RF - Gomes/ Kubs (5th)
DH - Kubel / Parm. (4th)
-——-bench——
UTL. Nishioka
C - Pudge/ Shoppach/ Doumit/ Barajas
OF - Tosoni

SP - Baker
SP - Liriano (some wishfull thinking here)
SP - Iwakuma (see above)
SP - Pavano
SP - Blackburn ////// Hendriks

RP - Nathan, Perkins, Aardsma, Duensing, Wuertz, Gutierrez, Broxton/ Dotel

top minor leaguers on 40 man Roster : OF Joe Benson, OF Oswaldo Arcia, SS Brian Dozier, SP David Bromberg, SP Liam Hendriks, RP Kyle Waldrop, C Chris Herrmann. +Cole DeVries ?

*Can this team contend? Well, look at the pre-season ’11 Cardinals…>Wainright goes down and everyone and their grandma wrote them off…. And look what happens. So I would be optimistic, yes (despite no Pujols)

Draft picks

Realistically, the problem is not that you can only get flamethrowers picking in the top 10 or whatever. It’s more of an issue of risk and reward, and the Twins appear, from a relatively uninformed perspective, to be unwilling to take risks on guys who are likely to burn out, but have greater potential. That has its merits, especially if you already have the front end of the rotation sorted out, but the Twins really don’t. It might be a strategy that would work better, for example, for a team like the Mariners.

by A Behemoth on Nov 10, 2025 7:02 AM EST up reply actions

okay I agree to some extent

Yes, The Twins were quick to give up on and trade Matt Garza, and generally shy away from “Guys that are likely to burn out, but have greater potential” SP’s. But can you blame them? If a higher % of supposed Frontline flamethrowers or closers have a much lesser chance of getting to and sustaining long-term success in the bigleagues. Then why take an unecesary chance? ; when a guy like say a Shooter Hunt, Alex Wimmers, and Kyle Gibson is sitting there and you know you’ll hit on at least one as being a solid big league contributor, yet unspetacular performer.

Becaues if you raise or produce enough of these “lower leverage arms” …. You can make a neccesary trade a time or two with a few of these "Lower risk , higher floor, lower Cieling players/ pitchers for a guy like a James Shieds, Zack Grienke, Ubaldo Jiminez. or a Tim Lincecum, mind you these latter and former 2 are starting to enter trade proposals/ discussions.

This in turn, is a great philosiphy and is truely how the Twins see fit from my perspective.
Or Else why would they believe in this so much?

I think that's how the Twins see it.

But I think you end up with a situation where you have a lot of guys who can fill out the back end of a rotation, and I don’t think that they are generally of the required level to be significant pieces to trade for elite starters. If you look at the pieces the Indians gave up last year to get Ubaldo, for example, I don’t think the Twins had the pitching to do that sort of deal.

Obviously, developing elite starters is easier when you can pick someone like Strasburg, or even Cole or Bundy or whoever, but the Twins seem to be taking a position that it’s hard to develop these guys (which is true), so they shouldn’t try (which I think is a mistake). It will be interesting to see who they go for with the number 2 pick though.

Rays

Don’t really need pitching. They are one of the most stacked young pitching teams in the league. There is a reason they are looking to move pitchers. I would prefer Alex Cobb over Kevin Slowey if I were them.

But the rest of your points I lean towards agreeing with you.

Twins

The thing with the Twins is that, if everyone works out, ie Mauer and Morneau are healthy and able to play well, Span is fixed, and Liriano pitches like a top half of the rotation starter, then they can contend, especially in the AL Central, but that relies on a lot of things going right. It’s one of these things that the Twins are actually much better placed than us to decide on, given the medical records and so on that they have, but they need to consider what the probability of having everyone back and contributing actually is, and if it’s not going to happen, then I think they have to look at a full rebuild. What would be worse for them is if some parts work out - I think, for example, there’s a good chance that having a full off-season to rest and build up strength again will really help Mauer, and others don’t - as a non-medical person, I’m less optimistic about the other three that I mentioned - because I think that the Twins can’t contend with, say, adding a fully healthy Mauer to last year’s team, but not having Morneau or Liriano playing at close to 2010 standards.

twins

I’d offer arb to Cuddyer and Kubel so i could collect the draft picks. And if somehow they do end up back with me, thats’ OK.

I’m a lot more scared of Morneau’s health than Mauer’s at this point. I think a lot of the problem this year was injuries and bad luck and I don’t think this is really a sub-70 win team. But that said things have thinned out and some retooling is obviously needed.

I have respect for Gardy but he’s starting to remind me of late-model Tom Kelly…getting too cranky, playing favorites, etc. I would start thinking about a replacement in the medium term.

I don’t mind the draft strategy at all. For 2012 I would be watching Zunino really close…he would be a perfect replacement for Mauer with Joe moving over to 1B in a couple of years. With the other early picks for Cuddyer and Kubel, I’d be looking for projectable power arms, then fill in with polished college guys in the middle picks.

by John Sickels on Nov 10, 2025 1:49 PM EST reply actions   3 recs

That's exactly how I'd play out the draft at this point

Things can change, maybe they go with a power arm at #2 if someone stands out, but Zunino could be a great fit. There’s a lot of talent in A ball that could be the Twins core moving forward.

excellent strategy John

If I am the Twins i’d want 1 of Cuddyer or Kubel back, not both but 1 or the other probably the cheaper one (Kubel)
who also happens to be younger, if they can get Cuddyer for less than expected (doubtful) they should attemtp him though, imo.

good stuff

not that they grow on trees

But the twins really need to trade/draft/develop a #3 type hitter. Mauer is more of a 8-12 HR guy with great avg and obp with lots of doubles, which profiles way better batting 2nd in the lineup

I guess you sign Jamey Carroll...

I get going cheap on a stable vet with Dozier getting close, but for what they paid him I think they could have landed someone a little better. But…he fits what they want, so we’ll see.

Really, this team needs to decide on its direction. If you think Mauer and Morneau will return to form, and you’re pretty pot committed on that idea in terms of their contracts, you spend the #2 pick on the top arm that is closest to the majors, bring back Cuddyer (need his versatility and leadership to get the team back on track), a quality backup catcher, and at least one starter who can strike some guys out. If nothing else, you need someone to mix things up so teams aren’t seeing the same pitches every day…

I’m really not comfortable with Valencia either. I’d love a 3B/PH vet to push him.

Now….if they decide it’s rebuilding time, then you let everyone go, garner a nice stash of picks for this draft, and try to clean house. One solid draft could go a long way to replenish this organization.
