We'll give Salvador Perez a first chance on the ballot this round.  This leaves as testers for the upcoming rounds:

As always voting is by +1 and there are places below to suggest testers or vote for players not currently on the ballot.

Dann Espinosa

He was worth 3.5 WAR last year, the highest for any rookie. Plus he showed power at 2B, which is pretty rare

Freeman actually had a pretty poor season

His defense was below average and I dont think he has enough power for a first baseman.

Do you feel that way about Eric Hosmer?

His nonsense fielding numbers look about the same as Freeman on fangraphs, as well as the power numbers. To be clear Hosmer and Freeman were both 21, both project to have really, really good power, and I think they are both good first-baseman as well.

Also, besides just my eye that tells me that Freeman looks like a pretty darned good first-baseman, he was also dead average on BIS +/- runs.

Freeman is a strange player. He is big and strong-looking dude , hit 21 bombs and 32 doubles as a 21 year old, and would seem to project for quite a bit more power yet, all along his development people have questioned his power. To me it’s just kinda strange. He was the Rodney Dangerfield of prospects and, now, the same of last year’s rookies.

The funny thing about the power is BA has mentioned scouts raving about his raw power

Yet somehow on this site people seem to have concluded that he has no chance to hit for nearly as much power as Hosmer. I honestly just don’t get it. He was every bit as good of a hitter as Hosmer this year at the exact same age, yet Hosmer gets all this love while Freeman is just another guy. I get giving Hosmer the benefit of the doubt because of his better pedigree, but the difference isn’t that big.

And UZR is obviously going to seriously underrate a 1B like Freeman because they don’t include scoops in the calculation at all and Freeman is one of the top few guys in the league when it comes to digging bad throws. Why would anyone place that much emphasis on UZR when its just a one year sample size and it completely disagrees with scouting reports along with DRS? Seems much more reasonable to give Freeman the benefit of the doubt at this point and at least assume he’s not among the 2 or 3 worst 1B in baseball.
