first round money

But not like a top ten bonus . . .I think it’s very doable.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

this is genius

I’m guessing they’re going to take Austin Wilson in the 5th at this rate. Why not?

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Risky

That’s an unprotected pick. Wonder why no one took him in the third when the pick was still protected?

I was just thinking the same.

My Guys: Gillies, Pacheco, Drabek, Verlander, Ozuna, A Salcedo, S Rodriguez, and others.

Cole

to the Nats. Apparently it would be amazing if he signs.

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

So if you had "2" on the over

until the Orioles started making stupid picks, congratulations.

Yippee

A reliever. Way to let short term needs dictate your draft Dayton.

Kyle Blair to the Indians

nice upside pick here

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

Surprised he fell so far

I really like him.

Sam Dyson to the Blue Jays

nice pick, I still find this a hilarious draft from Toronto’s perspective — I’m guessing their short-season team will have a LOT of signees on it.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

lotsa arms

They’ve done a solid job with all their picks, but what a buzzkill for people who were looking for $15 million.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm flabbergasted

By their strategy

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2025 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not

They’ve used their picks to really build the pitching depth in the system. It’s a draft that will take a long time to play out, but it makes the system much more interesting than it used to be.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

A sack of wet mice...

…would’ve been more interesting than what they had compiled under the previous regime.

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2025 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Hilarious

How so?

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2025 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

oh, as I've said on previous threads, I think this is a solid draft

I just can’t remember the last time a team took.. what, 8 arms in a row? That’s all.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Only one guy can pitch at a time

Because it's all hewing to slot?

Is this somewhat forgivable given the quantity of picks they’ve got here and given the dice rolls they’ve made on Adonis and Adeiny?

by Johnny Tuttle on Jun 8, 2025 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Brewers get 1B Hunter Morris

I like that pick too. Best 1B on my board now is high school third baseman Kris Bryant.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

Rays take Austin Wood

I like Grimm more, but this is a similar pick.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Mariners take Paxton

he is going to have to sign right?

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

probably

Just not sure what they’ve got in him at the moment. I think he was sitting 89-90 last we saw.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

A's take 3b Chad Lewis

Nice value pick

Moneyball what?!?! 3 HS hitters taken so far

rosario

ROSARIO to the Twins. GREAT PICK.

by John Sickels on Jun 8, 2025 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

absolutely crushing

The Red Sox have run utterly rampant this year. I’m not sure they have one guy other than Vitek who is signing for slot.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

...and the Yankees take HS SS Mason Williams

another nice pick for the Yanks. Damn.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Mason Williams

Yankees going toolsier/upside more so than usual with williams/gumbs early.
thought they might pop austin wilson, they have the money to pay him

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

idk

Maybe they plan on offering him a big bonus to sign and that explains some of their earlier picks? Will be surprised if it gets done.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

doubtful for the O's

Narron loves UNC. Unless they throw a boat load of cash his way, I see him in Chapel Hill this summer, actually.

Rays Round 5 targets

Kris Bryant, Justin Grimm, Jesse Hahn, A.J. Vanegas, Tony Thompson, Gauntlett Eldemire, Stefan Sabol and of course Austin Wilson.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

Whoa, Dickie Thon

Is he signable?

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2025 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

probably not

By this point, the odds of the preps going to college are much higher than the odds that they don’t go.

Notables: Kevin Gausman, Stefan Sabol, Austin Wilson.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Rays Shadow Draft

RHP Jesse Hahn, Va Tech. He’s hurt, but too much upside to pass at this point.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

I have no idea who this Ian Kendall person is

and with signable college players on the board (Grimm, Hahn, Eldemire), I do not get it at all. First complete and total head-scratcher for me.

Another Oregon player, apparently.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ian Kendall attends my high school, funnily enough

He’s a good talent, I’m glad he went to the Rays. Good pitcher, has a good feel for three different pitches and throws them for strikes.

"I feel like we are sending Danny Haren for Mulder all over again." - Cardinal fan on the Matt Holliday trade

Also

He can reach 95 with his fastball. He’s a good talent.

Roberts is a GREAT sleeper pick for the Twins. Massive power/speed production with a high walk rate.

Are there any out-of-slot types still hanging around?

Not that this is an original opinion

but it seems pretty clear Wilson isn’t going to seriously factor in here.

Oh I don't doubt that

But I have to think if it were even a remote possibility, some team would have already bit.

the oakland athletics: hittin' ain't easy

by walk off bunt on Jun 8, 2025 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

There were a few $1M+ picks after the 6th round last year

by jar75 on Jun 8, 2025 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm definitely not saying he'll sign

But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cardinals made a serious offer.

by jar75 on Jun 8, 2025 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure they will

No reason not to. But one of the reasons why he fell so far is because he’s been very unclear as to what exactly it would take to get him away from Stanford. He’s acting like he really doesn’t want somebody to wave money in front of his face and make him have to choose.

Unbelievable Stanford class, though. Ragira and Kauppila are locks by this point. Vanegas and Wilson only slightly less so.

We need somebody to make a comprehensive list of all the guys who are going to be difficult-at-best signs from round 5-6 onwards.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Never know

He could be scaring teams off while having a side deal with another team already, waiting to pick him in the 7th round or so

Hahn isn't an overslot guy

he’s a college junior (Va. Tech) who’s engaged an agent and is hurt. He’s got zero leverage now.

since he was my shadow Rd. 5 pick, I’m happy with that.

John should be happy

Twins take DeAndre Smelter in the 14th, have the money to make a run at him if they want.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 4:37 PM EDT reply actions

prediction

Not a chance in hell he signs . . .really wants to go to school, will probably cost significantly more than Wimmers

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I'd be surprised if he signs as well

But More money than Wimmers? C’Mon Now

Wow Blackburn makes nearly identical money as Baker does now....

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jun 8, 2025 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

how much do you think he wants?

I’m guessing it’s a very large figure.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

smelter

I went back and forth on it but ended up taking a (hopefully) signable JC pitcher from Oklahoma instead of Smelter. We’ll see if the real Twins can sign Smelter but I am doubtful

by John Sickels on Jun 8, 2025 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate what Baltimore is doing...

The Rays, Sox, and Jays are getting excellent value out of their picks. They’re drafting a good mix of safe talent and upside. They’re all selecting players that have dropped for signability reasons, and they all seem willing to spend a lot of money on getting most of these guys signed.

The Yankees are doing this as well, but to a lesser extent. They’ll make up for it in the Latin American market.

But I especially love what the Rays are doing. I’m envious as an Oriole fan…

I hear you

I was a lifelong Orioles fan, grew up in Catonsville, live in Monty County, work in downtown Baltimore — and I finally gave up on the O’s in favor of the Rays in 2007.

To be fair, this is a significantly better draft than any they’ve had in the past few years. They made the right choice at #1 (they usually do that), and then mostly non-stupid picks thereafter.

Mostly.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You gave up the Orioles?

For a team in their division after they got good?

by cowboy4eva on Jun 9, 2025 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Victor Sanchez, 3B, U. of San Diego

Any word on him? Has he been drafted yet? Injury?
Any thoughts that he goes back to USD to try and improve his stock for next year?

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.
