Results of the 1/3 Season Prospect Grading...

I have compiled the results (so far) of the 1/3 grading that the community participated in doing. Take these with a grain of salt, as there were as many a as 14 votes for some prospects, and as few as 1 for others.  Also, some prospect were not nominated for grading, so this list may not contain every legitimate prospect.   I assigned GPA points for each prospect.  If you aren't familiar, an A = a 4.0, an A- = 3.7, and so on.

Here are the top 50.  I'm strapped for time or I would go further.

Star-divide

1. Jeremy Hellickson - 3.93   2. Carlos Santana - 3.91   3. Dominic Brown - 3.9   4. (tie) Starlin Castro - 3.7   4. Tyler Matzek - 3.7   4. Mike Trout - 3.7   7. Desmond Jennings - 3.69   8. Aroldis Chapman - 3.52   15. Mike Minor - 3.5   16. Martin Perez - 3.48    17.(tie) Kyle Gibson - 3.47   17. Jacob Turner- 3.47  19. (tie) Simon Castro - 3.38    19. Kyle Drabek - 3.38    21. Wilmer Flores - 3.37    22. Wil Myers - 3.35      23.(tie) Jake Arrieta - 3.3    23. Ryan Kalish - 3.3     25. Andrew Cashner - 3.27    26. (tie) Christian Friedrich - 3.26       26. Really

That’s a pretty solid list for me…

by Dfarth on Jun 7, 2025 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

nice!

I was actually wondering what the grades averaged out would be 2 days ago, and here they are. I have a feeling Kalish and Pineda are going to crawl their way up some lists very soon. Not to mention my boy David Havens.

I drink your milkshake! I drink it up! Well Mr. Plainview, Devin Mesoraco and I drank lots of milkshakes, and we will drink yours too!

Kalish...

I actually expect him to fall back a bit as the community overreacts to his post-promotion adjustment period, much like they did last year.

by slamcactus on Jun 11, 2025 2:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Not Close To perfext

But it is dfinitely solid. Few guys missing here and there, but only about a five spot variance to norms. I applaud you for all the work.

My Guys: Gillies, Pacheco, Drabek, Verlander, Ozuna, A Salcedo, S Rodriguez, and others.

Would anyone who voted Matzek so high actually take him over Teheran?

Teheran is younger, more dominate, doing it at a higher level, going deeper in games, with a repertoire that’s probably stronger (at least currently). I just didn’t get the extreme Matzek love that was going on in the thread. He’s good and everything but he’s certainly not an A- or an A yet.

by nixa37 on Jun 7, 2025 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

It's the number of votes that skews it

Matzek only had 3 votes(2 B+ and an A-), while Teheran had more than 15 votes. Makes a difference in the average score.

by gatling on Jun 7, 2025 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

In Other Words

Lots of us are still forming opinions on Matzek — which I think is reasonable right now…

by Dfarth on Jun 8, 2025 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

good point

but wouldn’t you say, formed opinions (90% of which is A/A-…one Yankee fan drunk and low-balling everyone not in Pinstripes) are better than none at all? I guess that’s what nixa means…Teheran would be picked before Matzek RIGHT NOW by most scouts. Next year? Who knows? But doesn’t that mean that Teheran should be higher rated?

I guess it’s the problem with doing these things.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jun 8, 2025 3:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

What you are stating is that most scouts will take the “sure thing” (or at least “known thing”) compared to the unknown - which is obviously true. I think most of us are willing to go out on a limb and say that Teheran is about an A prospect and that makes him very very good. If I were forced to rank Matzek, I’d obviously rank him lower than Teheran. But, since this excerise allowed people to pick and choose who they voted on, I’d rather not rank Matzek yet. In other words, I’d rather abstain than be forced to put a B+ (for example) next to him. I just don’t know enough about him yet.

by Dfarth on Jun 8, 2025 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry about the strikethrough

Weird - - formatting thing. Was supposed to say “A-” prospect.

by Dfarth on Jun 8, 2025 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Stated Differently

Matzek had like 5 innings of work under his belt when this exercise started. So since the exercise was “regrades” but able bodied observers would conclude there is no body of work to warrant a regrade and simply move on to other prospects that have either played “up” or “down” since the off-season

That shouldn't work out to a 3.7, should it?

Which I guess would answer my question. I guess we should expect some mistakes on a project this massive.

I guess I can't really put him over anyone ahead of him

For now, but I have a strong suspicious that Nick Franklin will work his way up this list by the next grading period. A 19 year old MI with decent power? Yes please.

Where would Harper, Taillon, and Machado rank....

I think they all are at least top twenty with the first two being top ten.

ETHAN MARTIN!!!!

by joegonzo on Jun 8, 2025 7:33 AM EDT reply actions

Harper: Top 5
Taillon: 10-20 (behind Matzek)
Machado: 20-30

by jar75 on Jun 8, 2025 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Based in part from what guys like Callis,KG, Mayo, Law have stated in bits & pieces

Harper #1
Taillon above all 2009 prep pitchers
Machado ~ 30-40

Callis

Answered the Taillon vs Matzek debate in a Ask BA segment.

I still have trouble trying to decide on Matzek vs. Taillon. I tackled that question in the March 29 Ask BA, and I’d still give Matzek the tiny edge I gave him then, but there’s no right answer there. Based on their prospect status at the time of their draft, I’d rank the 12 pitchers in this order: Matzek, Taillon, Turner, Purke, Allie, Wheeler, Covey, Cowart, Miller, James, Whitson, Cole.

And here's Klaw

kind of answering that question in April…

Mike (DC)

Would the Pirates pass on both Harper and Taillon if they’re available at #2?

Klaw
  (3:16 PM)

Harper, we don’t really know - they did take Alvarez two years ago despite the projected cost. I am leaning towards “no” with them on Taillon, based solely on their reluctance to take the (likely) cheaper, better Tyler Matzek at four last year. But both answers depend on who Option C is.

by Kerm on Jun 8, 2025 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

hmmmm

Harper 1, Taillon 4? just a guess.

i wouldn't take these composites too far

We self-selected like crazy on this thing. There were several guys I didn’t vote on because I didn’t care, or because I didn’t like them but didn’t want to go through the process of justifying my argument.

It was a fun project, though. Hope we do it again at the two-thirds mark.

Well,

Thanks! I had a few hours to spare in between cleaning and packing, and thought I would make some sense out of that mammoth of a thread! It actually turned out better than I expected. It’s a reasonable list, despite the questionably way in which it was done.

by turambar85 on Jun 8, 2025 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Ackley over Alvarez is comical.....

Just saying….I like the list besides that, with few qualms, none of which are worth bringing up.

Good list, man.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 8, 2025 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

How so?

I like both guys a lot, and would likely have them ranked very near one another, but I just don’t understand that being “comical”. Gun to my head…give me Ack.

by Kerm on Jun 8, 2025 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

IMO ‘Hit Tool’ Ack is a little ahead of Pedro…and that is all it was on this particular list [barely]…

by St.Steve on Jun 8, 2025 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

it's ackley by a fair margin for me

Fair Margin isn't 'fair' to Pedro, in my eyes...

Or his: 3-4, 2B,3B, HR today.

Maybe he is mad at Kerm…..(AHHAHA)

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 9, 2025 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Comical may be a bit too harsh, I concede....

As, I really like Ackley as well. But, I was under the impression that this list was partially based on their production this year, or otherwise, it would be a static list that hasn’t changed since both were drafted.

Plus, Jesus Montero, while still really good, should not be nearly that high if this year is being considered, plus his apparent lack of staying power behind the plate.

But, as I said, all in all, a very good list, maybe, I just wasn’t sure of the criteria/what all went into the numbers.

I didn’t mean to come off like a dick, though, Kerm.

Thanks for the hard work…

Haha

No problem, just didn’t get the whole comical thing. I’m a big believer in Alvarez, and Ackley alike. Can’t wait to see PA debut in the very near future.

by Kerm on Jun 10, 2025 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

IT was comical because Dustin Ackley didn't slip to #4 last year

That’s his rationale, I assume

Fair enough.

But I think he’s gotta be a B+ at this point.

by OccamsRazor on Jun 9, 2025 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know about that

His numbers aren’t that great for a 1B playing in the PCL. You’d need to convince me to raise my grade from a B to a B+
