rumor flying around

is that the Nats are taking LHP Sammy Solis here. I prefer Workman, but that’s a very good pick.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

solis

Solis makes way too much sense. If the rumors about Workman are true, then it makes even more sense.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yankees pick, Cito Culver

dont know much about him. Was he a good pick?

by Yankees10 on Jun 8, 2025 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

eh

If they wanted to go cheap, he was okay. The Yankees really wanted a shortstop early in this draft. A lot depends on how spendy they’ll be over their next few picks . . .

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Solis

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Solis

this isn’t directed at you in particular, but just Solis in general:
I have watched Solis throw three times this year, twice at the recently completed Tempe regional and once when San Diego played Arizona St back in March and I was not impressed at all. He got lit up in all three appearences. He is around the plate alot and doesn’t have very good stuff. A fastball that sat 88 and peaked at 90 that looked pretty straight, a decent change and an ave breaking ball. When we rock a stud pitcher I take it with a grain of salt because we are always one of the top 3-5 teams in the nation, but then I watched Hawaii blow him up as well.

Basically what I saw was a guy that throws a lot of strikes, always around the plate, gets hit hard, then tries to compensate by overthrowing and loses control.

IMO he would have been only the 4th or 5th best pitcher on our (ASU) rotation behind Blair, Swagerty, Barrett and Lambson

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no idea

But I would love it if they did.

by jar75 on Jun 8, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

sure sounds like it

I’m guessing they’ve been in contact with his camp over the last few hours and they’re not far off on money.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice P pair for Pirates

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

Just wow. Huntington is going to turn that franchise around, I truly believe.

by gatling on Jun 8, 2025 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

if it's affordable!

baseball rules.

by doublestix on Jun 8, 2025 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't imagine they made the pick

without being willing to pay the price. The $3 million price tag was out there early this morning.

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Jun 8, 2025 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Define affordable to a

team that hasn’t had a winning season in, oh…however?

by thomasps3 on Jun 8, 2025 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely a good draft thus far.....

Surely, it is different from years past.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 8, 2025 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

oh yes

Good value if he gets back to where he was.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

never a good sign when even the mlb.com analysts are saying

“If the Indians can get him interested in actually playing baseball this year….”

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Washington

Saw him play last year in HS. I was impressed. Good throw from CF to get runner at 3B. Fell down stealing 2B, got up and still beat the throw. I saw 3 ABs: BB, HR, BB.

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

That guy was nowhere to be seen this season.

by FI2 on Jun 8, 2025 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yep.

The Red Sox are clearly trying to crap on the slotting system as much as possible, aren’t they?

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hate that they're smart

Teams with essentially unlimited resources should be forced to be idiots, a la the mid-1980s Yankees, in order to make it fair on everyone else.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Or the current Yankees

What a waste of resources, makes me envy Red Sox fans and their front office.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 8, 2025 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

and incidentally

I didn’t know it was pronounced “Jerk-O”

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

there you go

was hoping he’d drop to the Rays

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Who are you targeting for the Rays this round?

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

note

Announced as 3B.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Like this pick a lot

Choice and Cabrera is a good start!

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Jun 8, 2025 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

heh

I like Murphy. Very solid arm.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

the funny part is

The Pirates going Taillon and then Allie is like a lock to make Blue Jays fans furious about their draft spending.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

This

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Jun 8, 2025 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah damn the jays for not drafting taillon

by handknit on Jun 8, 2025 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Dats coo'...

First pick I’m somewhat jazzed about.

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2025 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Better college arms still available.

If that’s what they were going for.

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

2 things

1) I don’t see any argument that he’s better than Paxton; and
2) He’s almost certainly still there at 79, which is the Rays’ unprotected pick. Would be a fine pick there.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

picks

Marcus Littlewood to Seattle

Drew Smyly to Detroit

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:31 PM EDT reply actions

Kellen Sweeney to Toronto

I like this draft a lot.

by jar75 on Jun 8, 2025 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

jays fans probably hate it!

Sweeney is a good player, doesn’t really show big upside though.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

niko

with their glut of CF’er I bet they give him a shot to stick at SS. Would make little sense to have Span, Revere, Hicks and then him all lined up in the same spot, especially since SS looks real slim in their system

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he's an interesting one

Big kid, very nice athlete, pretty raw.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope so

Agreed. Too many OF’s stacked up. They need him to at least try it out at SS, though with Sano….anyone think 2B could be an option? Side note…the kid runs on stilts. Holy skinny legs Batman!!! Gotta think some more power will come when he fills out.

by purppride1 on Jun 8, 2025 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Sano

isn’t Sano thought to eventually out grow SS and most likely be a 3b, or am I thinking of someone else?

Regardless, you can always move one to 2b, and with Sano only being 16, that decision won’t have to be made for years

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

no you're right on

Wow Blackburn makes nearly identical money as Baker does now....

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jun 8, 2025 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

rangers

Really nice draft so far given the budgetary concerns.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Marlins get Rob Rasmussen

I like him a lot.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

oh yeah

Really good stuff, just small.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

rasmussen

very good pitcher
i have watched him many times over the past few years and have always liked him.

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Giants take Jarrett Parker, OF

Between him and Gary Brown, they’ve got the market cornered on college OFs with shaky plate discipline.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

Rays Shadow

SS Derek Dietrich, Georgia Tech

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

was looking at Bettis and Hahn

then Bettis goes to the Jays (pitching!) and Hahn is hurt, so I take the best college bat here

and wow, nailed it

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Like the pick

Rick Hague

Love the pick

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:45 PM EDT reply actions

+1

love the Nats draft so far. Probably would say the Nationals, Red Sox and Rays are having the best drafts so far — with all the caveats John mentions on the front page.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Several very interesting players left

Maybe AJ Cole and Austin Wilson are not going to sign. But I like Paxon, Gausmann, Wates, and some others. Dan Klien.

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

signability

Cole wants first round money. Gausman would be a draft eligible sophomore, LSU increasingly looking good. Paxton = whoops!

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

what do you mean

by whoops?

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably

for not signing last year and losing a good chunk of change due to slipping this year.

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

Clearly, Paxton blew it. People haven’t gotten to see him enough this year, and what they’ve seen hasn’t been enough to give him a high draft slot.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

he’s basically got to sign with whoever drafts him? Or is he going to be a pain to sign again?

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I assume he wanted more money by re-entering the draft

But by this point, he has utterly no leverage whatsoever. A team can offer him slot and he basically would need to take it.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll get more than 15K

or whatever slot is this low

paxton

Pretty sure that is a signing bonus of several hundred thousand dollars . . .but he has utterly no leverage at this point. He blew it.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Dodgers pick?

Anyone clue me on on who? Maybe they took John Wall?

that ironic?

The Dodgers taking Cash…cash to pay Lee?

by npurcell on Jun 8, 2025 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Good pick

for the Tribe.

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Colon

Olney reported that Colon could make it to the show as early as next year.

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe

He’s certainly polished and you can move him quickly.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Red Sox take Blake Forsythe, C

Highly rated last year, terrible draft season depressed his stock for most of the year.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Leake

After not signing 7th round pick Smoak in 05, they did not sign Mike Leake, drafted in the 7th round in 06. Throw in the Papelbon pick and there are some real mistakes when it comes to signing draftees.

I will never get over the division rival Rangers taking Smoak just one pick before Oakland selected.

by bl on Jun 8, 2025 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

indeed

Especially painful as Smoak was the only guy left on the board who will ever have a good major league career. Ever.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Smoak wanted to go to college

Beane said as much when he spoke about trying to sign him. Would love to have Smoak in the A’s lineup.

by asyouwish33 on Jun 8, 2025 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks.

by StickRat on Jun 8, 2025 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

surprised

I think the bigger question might be with his arm. He’s really polished behind the plate, but if you’re not sure he’s going to hit and you question the defensive tools . . .well, that’ll drop a guy quite a bit.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Wates

I’m happy. He was one of the top guys left in my opinion.

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

2b?

interesting position to announce him as.

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

what?

i didn’t see that. he is a corner OF/1B type i think.

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

was a 2b/SS

as a freshman before moving positions..
BA says he probably doesn’t have the speed for CF, nor the power for 1b/Lf. Guess thats why he was announced at 2b.
If he can handle it I like the move. He’s certainly athletic enough to be 2b

by ScottAZ on Jun 8, 2025 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

interesting

they definitely want deshields developed as a 2B, though they’ll start him at first in the OF. i guess they could use depth there. maybe he’ll move to 3rd or something as well. don’t know about his arm.

by auclairkeithbc on Jun 8, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Rays Shadow target

Cecchini. Would also be happy with Paxton, who’s still on the board

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 12:54 PM EDT reply actions

White Sox take Addison Reed, RHP

Skeptical on Petricka, but love the Sale pick and Reed is a really good find here.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Is it too early for David Filak from SUNY Oneota?

by StickRat on Jun 8, 2025 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

Cubs take Micah Gibbs, C

There you go StickRat.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

Stayin Alive.

by StickRat on Jun 8, 2025 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, that's a meh for me

Klima seems to think he’s a poor man’s Tony Wolters, and I guess the Rays’ FO has earned some trust. But unless they’re going Austin Wilson in the 4th, I don’t get it.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I really like 3B Joe Leonard, too

he goes to the Braves

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

cecchini

Maybe he still signs, but I think he wants a pretty hefty bonus.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Rays Shadow Round 4

Not going to go much longer, but I’m looking at Vanegas, Segedin, Grimm, Stanek

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

oops, Stanek off the board

I think I prefer Segedin here. Or Austin Wilson.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2025 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Segedin

gone to Yankees

No comp if Wilson does not sign so Grimm looks like best bet

by mtk52983 on Jun 8, 2025 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Dodgers take Leon Landry OF

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2025 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

Yanks pop Segedin

well, they couldn’t stay stupid forever. Oh well.
