Hoping for Castellanos if they have the money. Allie or Cole would be sweet as well. But I’m expecting something weird instead.

note

Not announced as catcher, weird to me . . .his real value is as a C.

by mrkupe on Jun 7, 2025 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

They have Castro

Kvasnicka would basically be Castro with a slightly better bat and worse defense. I guess they must be high on his bat. He does have great plate discipline.

by OremLK on Jun 7, 2025 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess

I think his bat is okay, but it wouldn’t do all that much for me anywhere but catcher. If he’s not a catcher, that takes the single biggest for taking him that high off the table.

Would have rather they gone after one of their other targets, like Reggie Golden or Jacoby Jones.

Nice

Isn’t it just like a scout to let one outing (especially one late in an injury-marred year) tell him what a player may/may not be? Oh wait, scouts DON’T do that. I like Kilma in general but this is nutty. It’s almost like Ranaudo hasn’t shown excellent, repeatable mechanics in the past.

This was a good risk by the Sox. They’ve gotten enough talent at the top that their draft doesn’t hinge on Ranaudo and they’ve got until the signing deadline to work him out and make sure he’s up to medical snuff.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 7, 2025 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

unless they want to use the $15m to sign all 50 picks.

by hrv1978 on Jun 7, 2025 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

that pick was not unprotected

But yeah . . .it definitely looks like the Jays had a different idea about their draft than some of the rumors had suggested. A very solid crop of players, and obviously there are plenty of high picks to be made tomorrow as well, but they didn’t exactly throw money all over the place today.

Haha

Potential #3 starter with the 46th pick and Cardinal fans everywhere are upset. Wow.

Pitchable college guys don’t throw 91-95 consistently with 2 above average offspeed pitches. The only thing holding him back from being a 1st round pick is average command. If the Cardinals pitching instructors clean him up a little then we got a steal.

I know some of you wanted Hayden Simpson but I’ll take Seth Blair.

Haha yourself

I’m pretty happy with the Blair pick here. I thought he was more refined than that, so the pitchable comment was a positive. Especially when paired w the Jenkins pick, I like what they did here

cards

Great start to the draft. They get a safe college guy with upside in Cox, a good college arm in Blair, and a young power arm to mold in Jenkins. The Cards don’t get the credit they deserve for working with pitchers of all ages . . .Jenkins was a real treat for fans who wanted to see some upside injected into the system.

no doubt

hayden simpson was stunning. More I look at it, I don’t think it was a bad pick (though I obviously preferred others). But in terms of stunning/shock value - without a doubt he tops the list.

as an aside, there seems to be a rumor going around saying that Hayden would’ve come off in the mid-late first had the Cubs not plucked him.

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2025 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

did the Cubs start that rumor?

I have to assume that the Cubs had REALLY good intel that he was coming off the board, and they must have absolutely loved him. I’m just searching for reasons why other than “he throws hard”.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

well

is his arsenal that much worse than what else is there in terms of college arms?

look, i’m defending the pick and saying it is great. But I’m not aghast, terribly disappointed with the pick. low-mid 90’s fb with solid movement, can maintain the velo for the most part (seems like he maintained it better last year, wore down a bit in 2010), 2 solid to good breaking balls, and a decent change. That’s not a bad arsenal to work with, and he fit the Cubs mold of athletic pitchers.

Throw aside the pre-draft spots (not saying they aren’t valid) and simply looking at arsenals, I think I’d prefer him to some of the college arms available.

Now … I would’ve loved for the Cubs to take a HS gamble, but since joining Chicago, Wilken has shied away from that route (and he’s indicated it’s due to the organizational preference for college guys). He’s also indicated he drafts more pitching now because that’s what the Cubs organization prefers. There wasn’t really a college bat that enticed me (didn’t like Vitek that much, didn’t care for Cox (particularly with the price tag)).

Those rumors might derive from comments Wilken made, so I’m not certain. The other thing is that the Cubs may be saving up for later, as they did with Colvin and Samardzija.

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2025 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

bleh awful typo

so felt a need to correct myself “I’m not defending the pick to the point of saying it is great.”

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2025 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions

take it for what it's worth

but on May 17th, the SID for the University of Tampa (Thomas Kolbe, twitter account tomrkolbe) tweeted that a scout told him that Simpson was slated for the late first and compared Simpson to Ben Sheets with a better change (probably a White Sox scout, because in a more recent tweet, he notes a White Sox scout used a Ben Sheets with better change comp.

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2025 3:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea...

It’s always impossible to say what could have happened. You can be so high on a kid who is “supposed” to go in late round 2 / round 3 or something, but all it takes is one other team being just as high or higher and you won’t have a chance to take him.

With all the signability issues involved in the MLB draft it’s also a bit different than other sports like NFL/NHL since the talent of a player isn’t correlated to draft position as closely so you can afford to do more off the wall picks and if the finances are working in your favor.

Two random guys to take a stab at what they might do - Eibner (I could see them letting him swing away) and maybe Jarrett Parker.

by toonsterwu on Jun 8, 2025 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm Thinking

Sammy Solis or Kevin Chapman to the Nationals

Build a really strong bullpen with Chapman and Storen or get a #4-5 starter in Solis. Each will be easy to sign.

Allie won’t be their pick. Not with Harper getting megabucks.

Jesse Hahn might be a better option.

by UncleBuck44 on Jun 8, 2025 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

hahn

Out with an as-yet-unknown injury. Likely not the pick there.

Draft worked out great for the Nationals so far. Lots of college guys still on the board. Solis or Addison Reed would make a lot of sense for them at 51, easy signs and high percentage major leaguers.

college

Beginning to wonder if Allie is going to be too hard to buy out of UNC. Smelter is as good as gone to GTech I think, he seems to really want to go. Cole and Vanegas has commitments to good schools, both are probably going to need overslot to get done by this point.

by mrkupe on Jun 7, 2025 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Are the Indians a possibility for Allie?

I wonder if the Indians will take a stab at Allie in Round #2 if he is still on the board. Again, the Indians are looking again at projectable, high-ceiling arms. I don’t know much about Allie’s background (i.e. was he an Indians’ fan growing up, etc.), so I don’t know if the Indians came calling and a good offer (“good” being a generous offer, but not one that is otherworldly or Earth-shaking) was presented would be enough for him to forego UNC or not.

Or, will the Indians avoid him entirely. Of course, the Indians don’t pick until the 5th pick in Rd. 2, so he could be off of the board by then. Tomorrow should be very interesting! :-)

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

by indiansfan on Jun 8, 2025 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions

you never know at this point

Considering the Indians will really have to pay out for Pomeranz it seems unlikely that they’d sink that much into another prospect, but who knows, perhaps they’re quite fond of the Ohio kid.

On the other hand, I don’t think Allie is taking a discount. If he was willing to move off his asking price, he probably would be gone by now . . .his arm is just that good. He probably is asking for money similar to that received by the top HS arms last year.

I think Allie probably goes to somebody relatively early tomorrow, but it’s going to have to be somebody with a plan . . .and a big check.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2025 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Good points!

Hello mrkupe,

That’s true regarding paying out Pomeranz, though the Indians have been putting most of their revenue into the Draft, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Still, I don’t know if the Indians would want to put that much into their 1st 2 picks; they often prefer to pay more to lower-round picks who slipped due to signability concerns (like 2004 45th Rounder LHP Tony Sipp, etc.)

You’re likely right that Allie is probably not that eager to take a discount; otherwise, he probably would have been taken in the first round. I’m a little surprised someone like the Red Sox or Yankees didn’t take him in the 1st or 1st S, but I’ve heard that Allie only found command his senior year, some question whether he can sustain that improved command against better competition or if that better command his senior year is not sustainable (without a lot of work and patience), and some think that he might be better suited for the bullpen.

If the Indians really want him, they may have to pick him in the 2nd round; I don’t know if I’d be comfortable with him that high with those question marks and his commitment to UNC. I’d probably be more comfortable in Rounds 5-10, but he likely wouldn’t last that long, and if he was picked there, he’d almost assuredly go to UNC without a massive check.

It should be interesting to see what happens to him - chances are that someone will probably take him in Round 2 - it’s just a question of who and whether he’ll sign or not.

Again, good info. - thanks!

Please take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
