Supplemental Pick: Wil Myers or Randall Delgado w/poll
Who will have the better MLB career?
Okay, I know that this is an "apples-to-oranges" comparison but the folks on this forum do a good job in doing things like this all of the time within rankings, mock drafts, etc.
In my 5x5 Mixed Dynasty League we have a supplemental prospect draft at the 1/2 way point in our season. Due to constraints on roster sizes there is always decent talent available in the supplemental draft, primarily "fast risers" who were not on many top 75 lists in the preseason.
Through a trade, I have the 2nd pick. I expect Kyle Gibson to be chosen first. With the 2nd pick I am torn between Randall Delgado and Wil Myers. Delgado has been brilliant in High A. Myers has shown real power in Low A, although his defensive reports suggest that he is likely to be moved out from behind the plate. Organizationally, the Braves do a much better job at developing prospects than the Royals do.
Anyway, putting positional needs aside who would you rather have and why?

Myers, easy
probably a consensus top 25 talent right now, already showing good contact ability, patience, and in-game power. Has speed. His bat would play anywhere.
He’s a less risky pick, imo, both due to injury concerns (pitchers more likely to flame out) and with skill sets. I’d take Myers and not look back.
Now, if Gibson were still there, that might be more difficult…

Myers
I’ll take the position player over the pitcher.(injuries)

League Size?
Teams? Players per team active/bench, especially at catcher?

14 team Mixed
Start 13 hitters/9 pitchers. 34 man rosters (including prospects). Start 1 Catcher only.
I’m not as concerned about Myers moving off of catcher as I believe, that good bats perform better (especially out of the gates at the MLB level) if removed from the catcher position thus their “fantasy value” is about the same given that they will put up better offensive numbers

Delgado
From everything i’ve read Myers is moving of Catcher and most likely to the OF. I like the bat, but as an OF it is certainly less appealing. Plenty of good bats to choose from.
Delgado’s got true ace potential that few have. Hard to pass that up, imo.

Delgado's stuff
Has gotten very high marks from scouts this year. Free and easy velocity that touches 96. BA said his biggest “to do” heading into 2010 was to work on command. He’s done that in spades.
AF said in spring training, he liked his “stuff” better than all Brave pitching prospects.
Yes, I would say that Delgado has Ace stuff (TINSTAAPP caveats apply)

don't understand...
…the skepticism on Delgado. His numbers and scouting reports are top flight, and there’s very little to choose between him and other top flight (i.e., ace potential — which I assume was not meant to predict he’d be an ace) prospect pitchers.
In re the question, I’d take Delgado. More of a chance to be special. Myers as the hitter, though, is the safer choice. I think he’ll go to the OF and chances are he’s good/not great. Of course, chances are that Delgado is good (or worse)/not great, too. But I do think the ceiling is higher.

4 me Delgado
I think he gets lost in the future frontline starter talk mostly because of his rotation mates [AV/JT] but I like his 4-pitch arsenal and very projectable frame. He has cut down on the walks and really has not been allowed to throw his slider [ala Hanson, etc.] which is a plus-plus type offering. We will know a lot more when he gets to AA later this summer, but I like him over a sweet OF bat, many years out anytime.

eh
I think it’s a little more impressive for a 19-year-old to rake in the Midwest League than for a 20-year-old pitcher to dominate in the Carolina League. That, plus the fact that more can go wrong with a young pitcher, is why I voted for Myers.
I’m not running down Delgado, though. I don’t know much about him, but everything I’ve read has been positive.

Delgado
purely because I’m incredibly skeptical about the Royals organization and just figure they’re going to do something to screw Myers up.

Delgado
You have to go with the upside of the pitcher if it’s likely Myers doesn’t stay at catcher. Some say to not downgrade Myers if he doesn’t stay at catcher because he will play more. IMO his stats are easier to replace if he’s an OF. In my mind he only carries elite value if he stays at catcher, which he probably won’t.

KC is a really bad team
Wil Myers be worse at Defense than John Buck?
With Moose, Gordan, Hosmer all taking lineup spots in the next 2-3 years and Billy Butler taking either DH or 1B I can certainly see the Royals going with Myers at C for awhile unless he truly bombs out at the position at higher levels.
Rome wasn’t built in a day and I think that the Royals would make the tradeoff of O-for-D for awhile.
