From Minor League Splits' list of probables:

AAA

Looks pretty barren at the moment, with some TBAs still there.  Sean West, anyone?

AA

Zach Britton
Ronald Uviedo (apparently back to starting after the Pirates traded him)
Casey Kelly
Aaron Crow

A+

Wilmer Font

A

Eric Arnett
Garrett Richards
Kenneth McNutt

Maybe some of those TBAs will sexy-up the slate.

never been high on him, even when he was putting up good numbers as a braves prospect. his stuff just isn’t very good, as evidenced by the 6.0 K/9. he might be a loogy someday, but i don’t think his stuff and low gb% will play very well at higher levels. also, .268 babip.

Couple of interesting tidbits from JJ Cooper's chat today
Ike (OH): Any love for John Lamb? He’s quietly becoming one of KC’s best young arms.

J.J. Cooper: Love some John Lamb. I’ve heard at least one pro scout suggest that when it’s all said and done he could be the best pitcher out of the Royals’ crop of pitching prospects. I wouldn’t go that far myself—Mike Montgomery’s stuff is simply too filthy for me to not rate him No. 1—but Lamb is very, very good. He really knows how to pitch, carries a veteran mentality as a 19-year-old in high Class A and has good stuff to go with it.
Tyler (Harrodsburg, Ky): JJ, has there been any reports on when Casey Crosby, Jason Knapp, or Dellin Betances will start pitching again?

J.J. Cooper: Betances is back. He threw well for Tampa last night. Crosby is throwing a simulated game on Saturday and if all goes well could be in Lakeland before the month is over. Sorry I don’t have an update on Knapp.

an especially info-rich chat session today, I thought

Other highlights from the chat:

-Wil Myers: in the middle or better of the top 100 (30-50 range?)
-J.J. Cooper rates the Braves’ pitching prospects as follows: Teheran-Vizcaino-Minor-Delgado-Hoover
-Brandon Belt has reworked his swing a bit from his college days
-Jon Singleton would be “near the top” of the Phillies’ list
-On the early short list for #1 prospect next year: Montero, Jennings, Ackley, Brown, Montgomery, Teheran, Vizcaino, Trout
-Vizcaino vs. Teheran is debatable

Interesting to hear what’s going on in the BA kitchen.

Havens (speculation)

I think that he may have injured himself again:

“a-Struck out for Havens in the 3rd.”

The only reason I could see him being replaced mid at-bat is if he injured himself during. Hopefully it’s minor.

from http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=25785

Mets infield prospect Reese Havens was removed from Binghamton’s game with Trenton in the second inning last night.
Havens, who is hitting .343 (23-for-67) in 17 games with the B-Mets, was benched as a precaution.
"Reese had some soreness,’’ said Binghamton manager Tim Teufel. "I took him out as a precaution. Let the trainers deal with him.
"It’s something that he’s dealt with before. That’s how I’ll leave it.’’
Havens dealt with an oblique strain that sidelined him from the start of the season until April 30. Since coming to Binghamton, his play at second base and effort at the plate have been sensational.
"Right now Reese is day-to-day,’’ said Teufel. "I’ll know more when he gets in here tomorrow.’’

Yes, the walk rate is very high but the peripherals look very encouraging. Maybe challenging him at a higher level would be beneficial…?

by St.Steve on Jun 12, 2025 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Higher levels = more advanced/patient hitters.

I would think the BB’s would go up if he got promoted. Plus dropping him into the Cal league would be a bitch of an assignment at this point.

I don’t think his BBs will necessarily go up. Guys with great stuff sometimes have a problem getting lesser hitters to take the bat off of their shoulders. As the hitters get better, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Fabio’s numbers improve as well.

Chisenhall absolutely smoked his HR. Kelly was solid but never seemed dominant, I was more impressed with De La Cruz (after the 1st inning where his command was horrible). That being said, Kelly was in control, but as I said, the Akron hitters never seemed overmatched.

My boy has stunk at AAA. I have to admit that I never thought in Yonders worst 118 Abs anywhere that he would have 8 walks. I think he’s been pressing with a hot month or two keeping him from the show. Its nice to see him going back to his patient approach.
I always thought a ton of walks and a plus .400 OBP would be the foundation of his offensive game - still do

Hmm

Have we ever considered that hitting in college doesn’t prepare you for the majors as much as pitching college? Hitting well in college is easier than pitchuing well? Just something Ive been thinking about lately. I still think he’ll adjust, just that the adjustment isnt as smooth as we might have liked.

by casejud on Jun 12, 2025 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

college ball

I basically view it as short-season ball with more polished but less talented competition and a metal bat. Pitchers definitely do benefit a lot from college ball . . .I think the lighter schedule makes it easier for the projectable ones to fill out, and facing lineups full of 21-22 year old batters from a young age forces pitchers to develop some kind of secondary stuff.

For hitters . . .well, obviously the metal bat is more forgiving and that can ingrain some bad habits. But at the same time the starting pitchers that the typical college hitter faces is either A) an upperclassman and therefore really polished or B) an exceptionally talented arm. Intuitively it might force batters into a more sink-or-swim situation than they might face in their first few years in the pros.

The raw talent level is certainly higher in the pros but I don’t think the level of polish of pros clearly surpasses the college game until AA.

Klaw touched on this in a recent chat
Deric (LA)

You may have answered this sometime, but where does major conference college baseball translate to an A-AA-AAA system? Around AA?

Klaw
  (12:48 PM)

The best conferences - SEC, ACC - might be around high-A. It’s all downhill from there. The big difference between college ball and the minors is all the midweek starters you get in D1 that are so far below the caliber of anything you’d see even in short-season ball.

Upset over his recent demotion to Triple-A Albuquerque, left-hander Scott Elbert has left the team.

Elbert has been placed on the team’s inactive list. The 24-year-old left-hander was called up from Triple-A on May 28, but made only one appearance with the team on May 29 before being sent down. The 2004 first-round pick isn’t making any friends in the organization right now.

just my opinion

as an on/off again fantasy owner. They get him stretched out then move him to the pen, and kinda go back and forth with it. His command is real hard to get a handle on, so it’s not like he deserves preferential treatment or anything. I just wish they would give him a legit shot at 5-7 starts and see what they have.

Ranaudo is headed to the Cape Cod League this summer . . .watch how he does there, as it could have a dramatic effect on how those contract negotiations go.

That part of the draft was good, but it was the rest of the draft where things got ridiculous. They’re going to be cutting a lot of big checks but the draft is filled with signability guys. I’m not totally convinced that they’re going to let ANY of those guys get to school.
