Dynasty League Trade Offer
Like I have stated before I am new to this whole "prospecting" thing. I took over a team that was in pretty bad shape and have traded my 2 good players for prospects and I am in complete rebuild mode. I just received an offer and I am torn on it and was hoping some of you more experienced prospectors could help me. Here is the offer:
I get: Starlin Castro Dominic Brown Tim Melville
I give: Dominic Jennings
Difficult for me because I love what Jennings brings to the table. My team is loaded (in my opinion) with prospects.
Any and all help would be much appreciated.

I would do it...
and I don’t like Dom Brown all that much, but Dom Brown and Castro>Jennings.

If you are talking about Desmond Jennings
I would not consider trading him for those guys.

i say no
Jennings is the best player in that trade. I’m not in love with Castro as a fantasy player.

Yea i'm with the majority
Dom brown is pretty far away from making an impact in fantasy and there’s still a shot he doesn’t, Castro may be a .300-10-15 with however many runs and rbi’s he gets from the cubs lineup… good contact, not much power, middling speed. Jennings looks like a stud and a much more valuable player in your position

The pretty far away argument...
doesn’t work in this situation because he is not playing for now. Dom Brown is not much worse of a player than Jennings is either. I’m not the biggest fan of either player, Jennings is only slightly better in my opinion. Dom Brown has more power potential, but jennings has more speed and they have similar plate discipline. If defense was part of this than I wouldn’t do it, but in fantasy I would. The main reason I would make this trade is because it is Brown plus Castro. If Castro puts up a .300-10-15 line from the SS position, that is still a very valuable player from a position where he has very little talent and almost no depth. It would be a slight downgrade in outfielders(if any at all), a huge upgrade at SS, and another high upside arm to add to your farm.

The pretty far away argument...
most definitely does work…. the problem with rebuilding is often people will continue to sell prospects who are MLB ready for one’s who are new to the scene (aka they haven’t had a chance to fail so their ceilings look sky high)…
Now this is OK if you decide to trade guys who you don’t think will be as valuable in the bigs as they are in the minors… take a guy like reddick, who has gotten some good press amongst prospectors, but in reality he’s never gonna be a major contributor on a fantasy squad…
Trading jennings for a risky commodity like Dom Brown and a guy who while may hold some value, .300-10-15 isn’t anything special, when jennings has the tools to to be a 20 HR/50 Steal talent in time…. i just would rather not take the risk of Dom Brown turning into a bust
my strategy here would be let jennings establish himself, and see if someone will offer a more secure package of players… or atleast two high upside guys

Dominic Jennings
Would make an interesting player - cross-breeding Brown and Jennings.
Seriously though, Jennings will be an absolute beast for fantasy. His numbers should come pretty close to what Carl Crawford does every year, with the potential for even more power. The only real concern with him is injuries.
BTW - You say your team is loaded with prospects (which I happen to agree with given how deep the rosters go). Since this is the case, why give up the best player? I would only ever make this kind of deal if I felt like I needed more depth on my roster - which you clearly do not.

counteroffer
With all those prospects, I’d have to think you could find a way to get Starlin Castro without giving up Desmond Jennings.

Here are all the players that both of us have shown interest in
He is interested in: Jemile Weeks, Desmond Jennings, Fernando Martinez, Jeremy Hellickson, Julio Teheran, Donovan Tate, and Tanner Scheppers
I am interested in: Mat Latos, Jesus Montero, Justin Smoak (he has deemed these 3 untradeable) Starlin Castro, James Darnell, Michael Taylor, Dom Brown, Kyle Drabek, Mike Montgomery, Hector Rondon, Tim Melville, Andrew Oliver, Trevor May and 2 guys I am curious on a flyer are Zach Stewart and Fautino De Los Santos.
My main targets were Castro, Taylor, Brown. He said that I could not get all 3 unless Jennings and Hellickson were included so I moved down to Casto and Brown or Taylor.
Any ideas for me?

Starlin Castro and MichaelTaylor
for Hellickson and Tate is my trade idea.
I guess if you like D.Brown over Taylor you can push for that offer but
1. that would probably be too much to ask and
2. I like Taylor over Brown personally both short-term (will be a factor 18 months before Brown) and long-term (I think he can put Jayson Werth type stats)

What would you think of this counter
Taylor
Castro
Melville
for
Jennings
Weeks
Jennings is his main target. He likes Helly but is not super high on him because of injury concerns.

League Structure?
I’m assuming you’re in a 5×5 league? If so, then Jennings is a potential first round pick talent by 2013 or 2014. I would play hardball with the guy and take Weeks out of the deal if he really like Jennings that much. Even as a 3 for 1 I wouldn’t be thrilled with the deal.
I’m personally in a points league where OPS is king and SB’s are essentially useless (to replicate real life) so Taylor actually has more value than Jennings but this type of league setup is rare.

Your original offer
was the 3 for 1 with Brown instead of Taylor. Brown has more perceived value then Taylor (though I disagree with that).
You’re going backwards here with the offers. I don’t know who else he has on his farm but I think you need Taylor, Starlin Castro, and another A-/B+ type prospect to pull the trigger (Melville is a B/B- guy). If the guy says no, then keep Jennings.

I would ask for this...
Taylor
Montgomery
for
FMart
& if you need to add another player, make it a lesser player like Tim Alderson and then see if you can get FDLS in there as a throw in (I think he’s coming back strong IMO).
I don’t really like Castro as a hitter, so I wouldn’t really go after him. Darnell and Drabek would be the other 2 players that I would want after Taylor and Montgomery.

Sometimes it's just best to say no...
It seems as though you are trading for the sake of trading. If you want Castro, make a counter with something else he wants, but don’t give up players when you have good organizational depth. This really depends on your MLB roster. If you have 3 young OFs in your MLB OF, and can afford to trade Jennings because he won’t fit on your team, then do so. However, if you have an OF who’s on his last legs, why not hold onto Jennings who should cut his teeth this year and use the old warhorse until Jennings acclimates himself.
