Valentine's Day Discussion

Discussion Question for Valentine's Day:

Does your spouse or significant other like baseball? If yes, did you have to convert them to the game, or did they already like it before you met?

Depends on how you define "like"

She likes going to games - mainly for the atmosphere. But she hates watching a game on tv, which means I have to be very picky on which games I decide to fight over wanting to watch.

Same here, I am an Indians’ season ticket holder (insert joke here), and the atmosphere of the games is what she likes. That being said, combine that with warm weather in the spring and it makes for a good vacation each year to go to Spring Training.

The one thing she doesn’t like though, is my obsession with my dynasty baseball league! :)

good luck on the dynasty league aspect!

if you can turn her around on the dynasty league, you know she is a real keeper!

If “like” means: tolerates an occasional Sunday afternoon Twins game on TV and wants to make it to ONE game a year. Hopefully she likes attending outdoor baseball more and we can go more often.

My girlfriend likes going to the games, but she isn’t a huge fan of watching them on TV, though she does get into it when it is a good game.

Also, I’m a huge Yankees fan, so needless to say she watched A LOT of baseball this past October…that probably helped her get into watching baseball a little more

My wife and I were introduced by my realtor

Our first date was getting together at her place for dinner and the NLCS (Bartman game)

The wife is a Cubs fan

Definitely didn’t have to convert her.

Made for interesting discussion with both her family (full of Cubs fans), and my parents (also Cubs fans), since I’m an A’s fan. I’m probably not winning that battle when we have kids…

Really scary idea in her family: Another family group related to her (I think it’s like a great Aunt or second cousin type link):

Husband: Cards fan
Wife: Cubs fan

8 kids: 4 Cards fans, 4 Cubs fans.

My wife hates baseball...I've been working on her for years.

Hopefully a good pennant race can cure it…if not, well, I don’t know.

my girlfriend has become a bigger fan, mostly to tolerate me

In fact, the other day for some reason she was trying to think of a player named Tim, and the first one she came up with was Tim Beckham.

Pretty awesome.

We are working on it

Every year my wife says she likes (or maybe tolerates) it more and more.

For the Love of the Game

My Wife used to only like going to ballgames for all the tasty snacks at the ballpark. During the 2003 Season, she began watching Red Sox games with me daily on the MLB ticket. She gave every player her own nickname and she truly enjoys watching the games. Life is good LOL

This is going to be the first baseball season together with my wife.

She knows I love baseball, and I think she will enjoy going to games, but she might take some convincing to turn into a real fan. I’m hoping to get her to start to like various team members so she has something to watch and root for other than just “baseball”

Before we got together

she didn’t even know what baseball was. Then, I gave her a test, literally a baseball test with over 50 questions. After this she now understands it and now loves going to Angel games with me and watching them on TV.

First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

Curious

what the 50 question test entailed exactly

If I can find the test I will put some of the questions on here. been 4 years now.

my girlfriend hates baseball

My friend that is a huge Cubs fan met a woman at a party a few summers ago and started chatting with her. He asked her what she had been doing that summer, and she replied “Same thing I always do every summer - drink beer in my back yard listening to Cubs games on the radio”.

They are now married.

She tolerates it

This is funny. Her and I discussed this last night when we were out on a date. Before we got together she liked watching baseball. Once we got together she started to hate it because she says she has never met anyone that watches baseball this much. Since then she is starting to come around. She likes watching Grady Sizemore (and not because he is a great baseball player) and enjoys attending Akron Aeros baseball games (we go to like 20 a year). So she is starting to come around and eventually I think she will be just as much of an addict as I am.

Wife couldn't care less about baseball

but she easily tolerates my slavish following of it, just as I easily tolerate her watching HGTV and the Style channels at every opportunity…

Before we got married...

my wife pretty much hated all sports. I was a UT baseball fan and had had season tickets for years. She had a son who was 4 when we got married, and I started taking them to the games. She took to it immediately. I think the fact that they were still “kids” and she had a son herself got her to thinking of the UT players as just more of her kids. Pretty soon we were going to Rangers games, then Phillies games (she was from Philly). And when our son went from t-ball all the way through high school baseball, she was a fanatic. Was even “baseball mom” for 3 of the high school years.

Sadly, she’s in DC now and there’s no real baseball there.

now a casual fan

I’ve worked hard at getting her into the game. She gets that OBP > AVG, but also likes looking at some of the better looking players. So she’s gone from a novice to following her team at least through August. In turn, I have to watch Rachel Ray and Oprah sometimes.

What I looked for...

My wife is the greatest woman I know. I refuse to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the grounds of the commercialism of the whole thing, so we celebrate Pitcher’s and Catcher’s Reporting Day. We will get each other baseball themed gifts, instead of cheap chocolate. She also tolerates my obsession with simulation baseball and is playing in a league to see what it is about. I know no one here will believe me, but I know I am a very lucky guy, and will just enjoy it for the rest of my life.

Very Cool

That is cool how you and your Wife celebrate Valentines Day. We too are tired of the over-inflated prices alho I haven’t talked her into baseball related gifts, maybe I will work that in ;-)
I am very happy that she finally understands the game with a high level of respect and knowledge altho she doesn’t get into the fantasy side and tolerates my obsession LOL
I almost teared up when she asked me out of the blue, if I ordered the MLB season ticket yet!!!

Happy Valentines Day to JERI

Jeri,
As the great woman behind the man, I wanted to wish you a very happy Valentines Day.
I also am interested in hearing from you out here so that we get the females perspective as we know John has an insane amount of knowledge of the game which definitely comes with a price of endless hours of research.

by topjimmy on Feb 14, 2026 8:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I thought John was the great man behind Jeri

Jeri actually took the time today, on Valentine’s Day, to help me with a question about ordering the Prospects Book. That’s one great double play combination no matter what way you view it.

My wife jokingly calls baseball "the other woman"

because i spend so much time watching and online about baseball. She does go to a couple games a year with me, but she doesn’t love it like I do.

My wife likes going to games, watching them on tv, listening to games on the radio when they aren’t televised……she even has me text her updates when she’s at work. And we’re Pirates fans! Definitely a keeper.

Took my wife to Spring Training...

in Tucson about 12 years ago and introduced her to Magglio Ordonez. She didn’t like baseball previously, but she loved it when we caught a foul ball at our first game together, then later took the ball down to the field and had Magglio sign it. My wife speaks Spanish, they had a long friendly conversation, and she’s loved the game ever since. Unfortunately, she became a ChiSox fan (because of Magglio), but I have been able to live with that. My wife is otherwise perfect. :)

JERI's Baseball Fandom

I love going to games. I love the smell of all the stadium treats, I like people watching, and I like being able to focus on the player who interests me. I like watching the pitchers the most, and guessing what will be thrown by looking how the ball is held, etc. I don’t like watching baseball on TV. You don’t get the crowd excitement, and you have to look at whomever the cameraman and director think you should look at. However, during the season, if there is a game John wants to watch, there’s no question…especially since he uses the ‘but Honey, it’s my job’ excuse…he gets to watch it. To be fair, though, he usually will only ask to watch a game on the main tv that has a personal interest for him. Otherwise he records it and watches it downstairs or watches it on the computer. I can’t really complain, but don’t tell John. :-)

How much MLB do you and John watch?

Obviously John’s passion is MiLB, but I’m sure he likes to follow players after he graduates.

P.S. Just got the book and it was excellent. Perhaps even better than past versions. Nicely done.

MLB Games

Sadly, I don’t think I’ve been to a game since our 4 year old was born. We have issues finding available babysitting, especially for something like a baseball game, which would have us gone from about 5pm to midnight. AND, it’s pretty damn pricey, too, once you factor in babysitting, parking, admission and Sheboygan Brats! John tries to go with family/ friends a few times a season, but it is pretty hard to get there sometimes. I’m not even sure he got to the KC stadium once last year, now that I think about it. I’m sure he’ll do better this year.

My wife enjoys baseball, but mostly a convert

She enjoys games in person much more than on TV. Like the Twins poster above hopefully the new out door park will have her wanting to go to more games.

My wife has been kind enough to join me on most of my baseball adventures. I’ve been to 26 parks now, and she’s been along for most. We’ve had great times together (also fitting in neat things like all the national parks out west and museums and such out east).

Can't complain

My wife definitely likes going to games - major league (Orioles and Nationals) and minor league (Bowie Baysox). She’ll tolerate having games on TV, but if we ever have a local team in a pennant race again, she’ll probably watch those games with some interest. She doesn’t care my obsession with fantasy baseball or my son’s growing obsession with it. But speaking of my son, my wife gladly agreed to name him Nolan Ryan. So, yeah, I think that can qualify her as a baseball fan, can’t it?

The wind is in the buffalo.

I'm a die hard Yanks fan...

and my girl is a die hard Sawx fan. We’ve been together for about 2-1/2 years and she’s already brought me to 3 games. 2 at Fenway, 1 of which was a Yanks game, and the other at the new Yankee stadium for the opening exhibition games. It’s great having someone to enjoy games. Plus she is know taking an interest in my fantasy league asking for tutorials on how the draft works. Gotta love that. She’s definitely marriage material

by Tbose622 on Feb 15, 2026 8:44 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

She certainly likes it

Loves going to the games, can stand watching it with me on TV. Of course, I’m just lucky she likes sports and works in sports (worked for the Pistons/Shock, AHL and now College Athletics).

Sometimes she’ll grit her teeth to get through a Mets game with me (can ya blame her?) but overall the only thing she really doesn’t like, like someone else said, was my dmb leagues. She often makes fun of me for that one…

My wife digs baseball. We go to about 3-4 Durham Bulls games each years and maybe around 15-20 Carolina Mudcats games (we live closer and the parking is a hell of a lot better in Zebulon). My wife tends to root for the nicest players on the team, even if they aren’t the best (sometimes they overlap). A few years ago she rooted for Johnny Rayburn, the next year it was Cameron Maybin and last year it was Chris Heisey and Chris Denove.
She enjoys watching the Phillies on TV, but only a few times a year. Though she’s watched most of the last 2 World Series runs. She mostly shares my love of the Minors and seeing guys climb the ladder (though she is less enamored with the stats side of why they’re so good or bad)
