Minor-leaguer Danny Gutierrez suspended 50 games

Right-hander Danny Gutierrez, one of the Texas Rangers' top pitching prospects, was handed a 50-game suspension after testing positive for the banned substance Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit disorder but is also an amphetamine that is considered a performance-enhancing drug.

Rated as the club's No. 9 overall prospect by Baseball America last month, Gutierrez will begin serving the suspension at the start of the season. He will be allowed to participate in spring training and extending spring training. Gutierrez told general manager Jon Daniels that he has a prescription for the medication but failed to receive a Therapeutic Use Exemption.

Why?

royals sent him home before he could get tested by MLB at one point

if they hadn’t, that’d been a 50 gamer right there. this would be 100.

Is he lying?

If he really has a prescription for ADD meds because he has ADD, then this penalty is stupid. Can’t they verify whether he was telling the truth or not?

Frankly, I wouldn’t doubt that he has ADD, based on his past behavior.

This is going to sound completely insensitive and probably would have best been not said but I find it amazing that generations today just come up with excuses for poor behavior. Unless ADD is a new phenomenon, I’d have a hard time agreeing medication is the only way to fix someone diagnosed with ADD. I’m only 28 but I can tell you when I was a terror when I was 2-12 but I was just a little brat not “suffering” from ADD. Sometimes kids just need a foot up their ass as Red would say but, again, I’m probably just being inexcusably insensitive.

Back when I was in school, the kids that made bad grades were just dumb, and the kids that misbehaved were just jackasses. Now they either have ADD or a ‘learning disability’.

I think my insensitivity topped yours, so you are off the hook.

LMAO

So harsh, but so true. Everybody has some kind of excuse thanks to the wonders of modern Psychology and Medicine:)

I consider the “ADD” excuse to have about as much credibility as the infamous “athletics induced asthma” aka not being in shape…I promise that Adderal is abused by baseball players all the time and it isn’t being used because they have problems other than it helps them do their workouts and drills better. I’ve never used it, but I have heard plenty of people constantly talk about it’s benefits and it is definitely an abused drug that is almost always used in the sense that caused it to be a banned substance.

I suppose there are probably a subset of people for whom ADD treatments do help

That being said, the rates of “ADD” diagnoses in baseball are ridiculously out of line with the general population (and I suspect that, really, most kids diagnosed with the disorder are being drugged into docility for the benefits of someone other than the kid).

The idea that a disorder which negatively impacts concentration is somehow much MORE prevalent in baseball (a sport which demands near-Zen-like concentration from its greats) is almost self-refuting.

Shawn Spencer: "I’m receiving a transmission from your husband. Really more of a voicemail, if I'm being honest. A status update. Perhaps a twitter."
Burton Guster: "I believe it’s called a tweet."
Shawn Spencer: "There’s no way I’m saying that."

Just because ADD, etc. are being overdiagnosed doesn't mean they aren't legitimate problems

To dismiss all kids who have problems with symptoms emblematic of ADD/ADHD/bipolar as ‘brats’ or ‘jackasses’ is just as troublesome as overpathologizing, if not more so.

ADD is a real and serious affliction which can be treated effectively by drugs like Ritalin, Adderall, etc. Unfortunately there is a problem with over/misdiagnosis (I think) and it hurts the credibility of the medical establishment. But that doesn’t mean you should disregard these illnesses completely….

That's just ignorant to say

ADHD, as it is called, is a neuro-pathic disorder than, when correctly diagnosed, can cause a tremendous problem in a child’s life. As a person who grew up with ADHD, I can say that it erodes self confidence, and places a panoply of challenges. I’m not saying that as a personal attack, since many people truly believe ADHD to be simply “being hyper.” However, it is far more than that

You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

The world existed fine before ADHD was discovered and people just coped with it. Society is becoming weak in my opinion, always looking for something to blame. I’m sorry if that is how you feel but I can just as easily say you are ignorant for thinking ADHD is some relatively new problem that can only be fixed through drugs.

The world existed fine before ADHD was germs were discovered and people just coped with it.

Therefore, germ theory is false. QED.

My point wasn’t that ADHD didn’t exist. My point is it shouldn’t be used as an excuse for behavior that isn’t new.

Further...

When scientists discover a drug that helps improve athletic performance, it is frowned upon, when they discover one that makes people predisposed to not be very smart all of a sudden intelligent, it is celebrated.

Just wait until they actually start giving the smart people this drug. Talk about a performance enhancer!!! I wonder if IBM is going to start testing for PED’s.
