What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

I will be gone this weekend
CWhitman is going to post the polls on Saturday and Sunday in my absence, thanks once again for that Casey.
I voted for Scheppers here, this is about where I have him on my list but there are a few names ahead of him on my list that still aren’t on here. Lyles and Castro I see on in a little while, I have Castro in the mid 60’s and Lyles in the late 60’s/early 70’s range. Without the injury concern, Scheppers would be top 30 I think so he was any choice in this group.

Without the injury concerns
Scheppers is a lot higher than a top 30 guy, IMO, but then again, without the injury concerns he would have been a top 5 pick in 2008 and probably would be in AAA by now. I sort of think of him as being like Kerry Wood, warts and all. Someone who could be dominant when healthy, but is a bit inconsistent and has massive injury problems.
I actually have him a good deal higher than this and have been voting for him for about 10 polls now. If you only look at the stuff/performance continuum, he’s a top 5 pitching prospect, possibly top 3. He’s probably a pretty damn good major leaguer even if he doesn’t stay healthy, and if he does, then watch out.

When I counted the votes for the runoff
Zach Britton, Ethan Martin, Jared Mitchell, Matt Dominguez, and Mike Moustakas all ended up under the 5% mark. With those guys plus the winner there will be 6 open spots. I’ve tried to keep it 6 and 5 for the most part, splitting the pitchers and hitters as close to equal as possible with 11 spots, doesn’t really matter which group has the extra player. The next six in the rotation are Jarrod Parker, Simon Castro, Todd Frazier, Thomas Neal, Josh Vitters, and Ryan Kalish, but go ahead and mix in a guy or two like Sano or Shelby Miller or Jay Jackson, someone from the tester pool. Wilson Ramos and Eric Hosmer have been mentioned to be added to the tester pool, but I wouldn’t run one of them until we try some of the other names there.

Great, an even greater chance for Lyles and Castro to split votes...

?
Lyles and Castro are nothing alike as prospects, don’t play the same position. The only votes they could possibly be splitting are Astros fans making homer-like votes, and that’s not a bad thing.

Castro and Lyles
Other than Matt Hagen at The Hardballtimes, whose lists have been pretty weird across the board, and Keith Law, who had them 5 spots apart on his top 100 (#60 & #65), I haven’t seen many Astro’s lists this year with Lyles ahead of Castro.
In the BA book, Jim Callis, Will Lingo, and John Manuel all have Castro in their top 50, none has Lyles. Likewise, Mayo’s list has Castro at #31, with no Lyles in the top 60. Project Prospect has Castro at #47, while Lyles didn’t even make their top 30 pitchers. Diamond Futures has Castro at #53, with Lyles at #89. Scouting Book has Castro at #71, and Lyles at #130. And John, Kevin Goldstein, TPA, and Fangraphs also all have Castro ahead of Lyles.
Of course there’s no reason we should think the same as everyone else. And there’s nothing wrong with Lyles ahead of Castro, and most have them at least close. But I suspect the Houston fans, who likely follow the Astro’s system more closely, would be mostly voting for Castro rather than Lyles.

I abstain
I really can’t vote for any of these guys.
-I have serious doubts about Scheppers remaining in the rotation
-I have serious doubts about Castro’s bat
-Lyles looks great statistically, but the scouting reports on him are rather troubling.

Sheppers
I think he’s a bullpen guy, but with a mid-90s heater and potentially plus plus curve, he looks like a closer. That probably has as much value as Lyles or Castro will end up having.
by acerimusdux on Feb 13, 2026 4:23 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nope.
The innings are more highly leveraged, but you really think Castro’s ceiling is as a 2-win player? If he projects for even an average bat he’s a 3-3.5 win guy. No closer adds that kind of value.
by slamcactus on Feb 13, 2026 7:57 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There were only 4 catchers that valuable this year
I seriously doubt Castro ends up that valuable, since everyone is projecting something less, as Ive listed in numerous quotes from BA, BP, etc…

tally
Lyles - 14
Castro - 16
Scheppers - 19
I believe at least. It’s looking interesting, although Scheppers has had at least a three vote lead the whole time.

Castro
I’m tempted by Scheppers still, but I want to see how he holds up. I’ve got Castro over Lyles in my own head on Astros rankings, as he’s a much safer bet to reach the bigs. At the end of the day, I just think Castro’s safety, relatively high floor, and decent enough ceiling trumps it for me for now.
