Some big time promotions today….

Mets promoted both Brad Holt and Jenrry Mejia to AA, as the Yankees did with Jesus Montero.

Poll

That’s a really good poll, I personally voted for Brown, but I’d be curious as to why people voted either way.

by DJSlam on Jun 3, 2025 2:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I voted Brown

but I don’t see them as that far apart. Brown is probably in the 15-20 range for me at this point, with Taylor in the 30-40 range. Both are very good players, I definitely wish one(or both) of them was in the A’s farm system.

RIP Nick Adenhart

So?

Why did you vote for Brown?

by jepmotors on Jun 3, 2025 2:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Brown

Well, to be both are pretty close, but I have to give the edge to Brown because he is two years younger. You can’t really go wrong either way though.

by DJSlam on Jun 3, 2025 3:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i went with the higher risk/higher upside player in michael taylor

dominic brown is pretty much a lock to be a valuable major leaguer, between his defense, arm strength, and plate discipline, but if michael taylor peaks, he’ll be the best hitter in baseball. he’s got massive power, and i’m still not exactly sure how he’s maintaining his high batting average, but if he’s for real, it’s hard to imagine anyone who’d project to be a better hitter than him.

human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

wow

“but if michael taylor peaks, he’ll be the best hitter in baseball”… those are some pretty strong words there

by miraclemets on Jun 3, 2025 3:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah. definitely some big words

he’s not john mayberry. his splits show him actually hitting 63 points higher vs. RHP over his entire minor league career (.267 v. LHP, .330 v. RHP), so i don’t think there’s a huge likelihood of him developing into a platoon player who can’t hit RHP.

the funny thing is, i don;t think taylor’s future will be with the phillies. i kinda like the outfield setup as it is right now, and with ryan howard under contract for three years, i don’t think there’ll be an opening for him or ibanez to move to 1B, either.

even if he gets a chance to play due to injury, the current outfield of ibanez-victorino-werth is just so productive that it might be hard to turn the reigns over to the next guy.

if you remember, it took jim thome hitting .207/.360/.352 over the first half of 2005 for ryan howard to get a chance to play. before that year, ryan howard was in trade talks where the return was going to be kip wells or dennys baez. that was 2 GMs ago, but that’s still in the back of my mind.

Comp

Who would you consider a good comp to Taylor to be?

by DJSlam on Jun 3, 2025 3:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

having seen him play in lakewood, and recognizing the caveat that his power isn't fully developed yet,

he looks like a more athletic ryan howard. he’s actually a pretty decent defender in LF and he has a very good throwing arm, as well.

considering his college history, there’s still the very real possibility that his performance will collapse, and that this year in AA will be his best professional season, but if he hits, if he reaches his potential, there are not many people who can match what he could do.

human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Twins promoted Carlos Gutierrez and Alex Burnett?

Does anyone know much about Burnett? What kind of stuff does he have?

Wade Davis

I saw..

his rough 3rd inning, plus a couple other batters. Curve looked filthy, but he left his FB up in the zone quite a bit. Looked like the wind may have helped him out a bit on Dlugach’s double, too, which hit at the top of the wall in LF.

well, iowa took the time to lose already

didn’t even know it was an afternoon game. lost 3-0 to nashville.

Greg Reinhard - 2.1 ip, 1 h, 1 bb, 2 K, 1 HBP. He’s a middle reliever if he makes it up, but considering the Cubs pen struggles this year, he might be a thought. He’s been excellent out of the pen this year. Of the 13 runs he’s given up this year, 6 were as a starter.

Steve Clevenger - 2/3, 1 2B. The one positional guy with decent-solid prospect value at Iowa, he can hit, but am curious if the power he showed at AA this year was real.

Tennessee and Daytona

Btw, nice job saving the thread.

Tennessee lost to Carolina 4-3.

Tony Thomas - 0/4, 1 K. The nosedive continues. Wow. I mean, yes, he was overachieving, but wow.
Tyler Colvin - 2/3, 1 R, 1 solo shot, 1 RBI. Assist. This was a nice line to see. Here’s hoping he can find the stroke he had at the end of last year and perhaps push for AAA later this summer.

Daytona got shelled by Charlotte 8-1.

Dan McDaniel - loss, 2.2 ip, 6 h, 6 r (5 earned), 3 bb, 4 K. One of my favorite prospects, he got shelled. After a hot start, he’s had some inconsistencies of late. Considering he was pushed to Daytona, this shouldn’t be a huge shock, particularly since there’s a bigger scouting report now, but it is disappointing to see. Here’s hoping he adjusts. He’s at his best when his sinker is working so that he can get that groundball, but also has K stuff.
Luke Sommer and Dustin Sasser - both 1 ip, 1 h, 1 bb, 2 K’s. Both lefties have had solid years, and lefties create value. Anyhow, probably something I’m more intrigued with.
Henry Williamson - 3.1 ip, 2 h, 2 unearned runs, 1 bb, 3 K’s. The raw arm intrigues me, but that’s just me being a Cubs fan.

Not much to mention positionally - only 2 hits on the night. Daytona could really use a jolt of Josh Harrison and Josh Vitters.

Peoria v. Beloit ... twice

First game was the completion from the night before. Peoria won 3-2.

Chris Archer - 2 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 4 bb, 2 K’s, 2 WP (last night)
Chris Huseby - 3rd save, 1 scoreless
Junior Lake - 1/4, 2 R, 1 K
Josh Harrison - 1/2, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K
Josh Vitters - 1/4, 1 K
Rebel Ridling - 2/4, 2 RBI, E.

Peoria won game 2, 2-1 in 7.

Junior Lake - 1/3, 1 R, K
Josh Harrison - 1/2.
Josh Vitters - 0/3.
Rebel Ridling - 1/3, 2 RBI.

How many more Betemit errors or Josh Fields strikeouts are they going to watch before he takes over? A week, two weeks?

poll

I figured Brown would win, but I thought it would be pretty competitive. Surprised that it’s nearly 7/10 for Brown.

by rdf8585 on Jun 3, 2025 9:26 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why?

Just curious as I see Brown basically as good or better in most cat’s except power. If you want to make it stat based I’ll take Brown’s High A at 21 over Taylors last year at 22.

Some Rangers

Guillermo Moscoso (now at AAA): 6.0IP 6H 1R 1ER 0BB 3K 0HR
Julio Borbon: 2-4 BB
Kasey Kiker: 6.0IP 3H 3R 3ER 4BB 3K 0HR
Blake Beaven: 6.0IP 7H 2R 1ER 1BB 6K 0HR
Joey Butler: 3-6 2B 2RBI SB

Go Rangers...don't suck...

by Kinslerhomer on Jun 4, 2025 1:44 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Esmil Rogers

8 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks.

For the season: 5.8 BB%, 22.8 K%, 2.71 ERA (2.76 FIP). Considering that he’s a converted infielder, these are excellent (and age-appropriate) numbers for a 23 year old in AA.
