i see DeVaris Gordon got taken out in the 2nd

after stealing 2 bases and walking and a bunt single , anyone know if he was hurt?

by tulolince on Jun 2, 2025 4:08 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gordon

Not sure what happened in that game…but if you look at the recap there were a ton of defensive switches even during the innings. A few of them happened even before Gordon was replaced…was kinda odd looking at the recap.

yea

maybe they figured game was over so give some guys a break but didnt they have an off day the day before? i was just curious , was about to add Gordon to my team then saw that and thought twice.

Enough about them minor leaguers

Personal fave Vinny Mazzaro is on the mound facing the White Sox tonight! Gets through the first two batters okay, gives up a first pitch single to Dye, walks Thome on 3-2, gets Konerko to pop up.

Throwing tons of fastballs, but they’re nice ones . . .92-94 MPH and movement, trying to be cute with the strike zone corners but he’ll learn.

Mazzaro makes me think

Chien-Ming Wang. That’s probably a fairly positive scenario, but his mix of an average/developing slider, power sinker, well that’s what I think of.

Tim Alderson

8 innings, 6 hits, 2ER, 0BB, 3K and takes the L - he is officially a giant

well-played

Speaking of the Giants, saw the San Jose Giants get crushed by Stockton tonight. One positive note was that Villalona decided he’d show off his power by absolutely jacking a 3-run homer. Power in the Giants’ future? That’d be nice…

Dom Brown

top 15 player for me. 4 realz.

by daveh33 on Jun 2, 2025 11:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not quite top-15

he’s a 21 destroying A+ ball, I want to see him in AA first. His power could drop at the next level, in which case he becomes less of a top-15 and more of a top-35 to 50

great. there can only be 1 VD

anyway, i’m completely bought and sold on dominic brown. he’s got such a broad base of skills, that even if he doesn’t develop power, he’s still got the potential to hit 40 doubles, steal 20 bases, and play excellent defense in RF.

i’d agree that it’s too early to buy in to his power, but even without, he’s a hell of a player.

2 for 4 tonight

His final high-A line: .356/.406/.583. In a pitchers’ park in a pitchers’ league. Pretty sexy. That said, the defense is still pretty bad, as he is only throwing out around 10% of runners attempting to steal. It will be interesting to see how he handles the jump to AA at 19.

Doesnt worry me at all. He has stuff to work on and that’s what he’s doing. Some control problems dont concern me.

graph of the day: tony bastard

there’s an interesting subtext to this. prior to tonight, the scouting report on bastardo was as soft-tosser. BA has him sitting 88-91, topping out at 93. but they also said his changeup was his best pitch. coming into today, the only things we really knew about bastardo was that his changeup was his best pitch, and that his name means exactly what it sounds like.

fast forward to tonight, and he threw 102 pitches. 88 of them were fastballs 90 MPH or greater. the only guy who touched him was adrian gonzalez, but noone was prepared for this guy.

The much awaited Cubs update

okay, maybe not. Peoria v. Beloit was suspended and will be finished tomorrow.

Daytona loses 6-1 to Sarasota. Nothing interesting on the pitching front.

Tony Campana - 2/4.
Starlin Castro - 1/3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 E.
Robinson Chirinos - 1/1, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP.
Jericho Jones - 1/1.
Jovan Rosa - 0/4, 1 K.

2cents: Tossed Chirinos in there due to his 4 hr’s in 2 days. Jones is a young power hitting OF that was bumped up from XST recently. Keep wishing that Rosa could string together a little hot streak, but still hot and cold.

Tennessee loses 1-0 to Carolina in 10.

Casey Coleman - 6.2 shutout, 8 h, 5 bb, 2 K’s.
Brandon Guyer - 0/4, 1 K.
Darwin Barney - 0/4, 1 K.
Blake Lalli - 1/4.
Tony Thomas - 1/4.
Welington Castillo - 1/4, 2 K’s.

2cents: No runs is no runs, but eh. Lalli’s cooling off a bit. At least Thomas didn’t K.

Iowa loses to Nashville, 3-0.

Esmailin Caridad - 6 ip, 5 h, 3 r, 1 bb, 1 K, 1 HBP.
Justin Berg - 2 ip, 1h, 1 bb, 2K.
Steve Clevenger - 0/4, 2 K.
Sam Fuld - 1/4.

2cents: I’m fine with Caridad’s outing. At least he’s got his control settled a bit, which was a problem earlier. Berg/Fuld are both on the 40 man, so to that extent, they bear some watching (okay, I’m just trying to put more than 1 name for AAA). Clevenger hasn’t found his stroke for AAA yet.

by Jaeti on Jun 3, 2025 2:47 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Man, he is filthy

They werent lying when they said he would be a first rounder if he was in this week’s draft. Good stuff, Great control/command, Great Poise. Problem is he’s just about knocking on the door with the way he’s been performing… and Bowden and Buchholz are waiting in line in front of said door.

by alskor on Jun 3, 2025 3:02 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Stuff?

Have there been any reports on his stuff. I watched a little bit of one of his spring starts and was not overly impressed. That said, it’s probably not fair to judge a guy when he’s only thrown 15 innings of spring ball. How’s the FB velocity?

by Dfarth on Jun 3, 2025 10:18 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ive heard nothing but good things about his stuff

and I watched a good bit of him in spring and once for Portland. He doesnt have an overpowering fastball (low 90’s, good movement), but its pretty good, and the rest of his pitches move a ton. He commands all his pitches really well. Its like watching Dice K… if Dice K didnt walk 6 guys every time out, minus a few mph on the heater. All through spring Red Sox commentators and writers kept talking about how his stuff was much better than advertised (disregarding the early high 90’s fastball stuff that never had any basis).

by alskor on Jun 3, 2025 12:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Interesting

I’m really curious about him - and the comparison to Dice-K makes it more interesting to me. You say he’s a low 90’s guy but that his FB is a few mph slower than Dice-K; but Dice-K’s avg FB velocity is 91.8mph according to Fangraphs.

Do you think Tazawa has a mid-rotation ceiling? If his ceiling is Dice-K with better control might he be more than that? If his FB is more 89-90, might he be less?

by Dfarth on Jun 3, 2025 2:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dice K throws harder than that typically...

He throws eight or more pitches and changes velocity a lot… He’s kind of a nightmare for pitchfx given his repertoire. He throws the four seem some, but a lot of two seem and shoot. He can dial it up to 95-96, or used to at least. Dice K also has had arm fatigue this year following the WBC. Tazawa seemed to work around 90-91 when I saw him… and IIRC he hit 94/95 a few times. So maybe their fastball are more similar than Ive given him credit for.

I guess youre right that Dice K hasnt been throwing as hard, but I would still say Tazawa is a similar pitcher. They both have great secondary stuff and Tazawa commands his secondary pitches very well. Neither works off his fastball…

Carlos Gutierrez

5 ip, 7 h, 2 r, 1 bb, 1 k, 12/1 go/ao

55 ip, 37 h, 1 hr, 22 bb, 33 k, 4.5 go/ao.

I’ve never been the groundball fetishist a lot of people around here are, but I find this guy fascinating. I know he’s got a great sinker, but does anyone know if he’s made any progress on his secondary stuff?
