Yankees, D-backs, Tigers 3-way deal

According to mlbtraderumors, these three teams have reached a deal sending Granderson to the yankees, Edwin Jackson and Ian kennedy to the D-backs, and austin jackson, max scherzer, Daniel schlerth, and phil coke. Initially i'm thinking the tigers lost, because it seems like they are trading granderson, who's contract is a bargain, to clear payroll.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/granderson-to-yanks-edwin-jackson-to-dbacks.html

I'm always interested in the minorleagueball community's opinion, What do you guys think?

one thing for sure...

is that there won’t be votes for the D-backs. Since this is very defensible from both the Yanks and Detroit standpoint someone has to get the bad end of the deal. I don’t think anyone around here sees Jackson as a real impact player and that is what he would need to be for this to be a good deal for the D-backs.

by Dalman on Dec 8, 2025 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Yep

This is one of the worst trades in quite a while. I went with Detroit, but this is a good deal for the Yankees as well.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 8, 2025 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

one thing it says about the D-backs

is that they must think they are close to competing for a playoff spot. Otherwise, it makes even less sense.

Another thing, are the D-Backs taking on more salary with this as well? I would think they must be—I just don’t get it on many different levels.

by DenverBears on Dec 9, 2025 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

yea...

Jackson is only under control for 2 years, whie scherzer is under control for 5 i think

Detroit won this imo

Yankees a close second and the Diamondbacks a distant third

by Kenan and Kel on Dec 8, 2025 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

No way

Yankees get the best player in the deal, Granderson, and give up nothing. Scherzer is great, but the Tigers still lost something of value. Austin Jackson is one of the most hyped prospects in baseball. He was terrible last year, strikes out way too much, doesn’t draw enough walks, can’t hit for power, and was ridiculously lucky with his .390 BABIP. I’d be shocked if he’s ever anything more than a fourth outfielder.

"I see the job in bigger terms. Paperwork, that’s false hustle... Know what I’m sayin’?"

by Evan_S on Dec 8, 2025 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree

I think Scherzer is the best player in this deal. Austin Jackson is still loved by scouts so we’ll see how his career actually plays out. I don’t think his ceiling is that high, but he should be a solid CFer.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 8, 2025 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

There is no way that Scherzer is a better player than Curtis Granderson.

I mean, Scherzer has to be a top-25 starter to even approach the value that Granderson has in a down year. He hasn’t shown signs of being able to sniff that range, even when he’s actually healthy.

by PissedMick on Dec 8, 2025 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

+1 on that

We’re talking a 4 or 5 win CFer, signed to a team friendly deal for the next 4 years - otherwise known as his “prime.” Some upside there, too.

by alskor on Dec 8, 2025 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Scherzer put up an FIP of 3.87 in his first full season which is good for 34th best among starters (per fangraphs). He is 3 years younger than Granderson and is 2 seasons away from arbitration. He’s more of an injury risk, but I think he’s the best piece in this deal.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 8, 2025 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Sherzer has ace potential.

He could well be more valuable than Granderson over the course of the contract as long as he stays a healthy starter.

by Daniel Berlyn on Dec 8, 2025 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

I grade this trade out to be:

A- for the Yankees as they get Granderson and only give up A-Jax and Ian Kennedy and Phill Coke that have any value.

B for the Tigers they get Scherzer and Austin Jackson to go along with Phill Coke and Daniel Schlereth

C- for the Diamondbacks they recieve Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy to help out there starting situation behind Haren and Webb…. (maybe the 5th starter will now be Kevin Mulvey?)

I don’t like it for the D’Backs because they essentially sold low on Scherzer and bought High on Edwin Jackson I think Jackson is more of a #3 starter going forward, despite how he pitched like Detroit’s ace or #2 for much of last year…..

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Dec 9, 2025 8:08 AM EST up reply actions

#3 is probably being kind

Jackson and Kennedy look like back of the rotation guys to me.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 9, 2025 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

Edwin Jackson

People are confusing Edwin Jackson’s being overrated with Edwin Jackson somehow being bad or average at best. I got it from the start, he was playing over his head. But every time his name is brought up, everyone runs to say how not good he is. Ignoring the fact he has value. He is a #3 in the NL. Saying calling him a #3 is being kind is another example of people so quick to say overrated that it becomes overrated to say he’s overrated.

by cowboy4eva on Dec 9, 2025 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

C- for the D-backs might be generous. They now have 3 #4 starters. Jackson may still have some ceiling to grow to, but I think he’ll be another Jeff Weaver, a guy with huge potential who never lives up to it. Showing just enough flashes to hang around, but never living fully up to his potential.

This was like a Jedi mind trick by the Yankees. They got an All-Star Leadoff hitter with power who should kill in that bandbox, by giving up various spare parts they probably wouldn’t have gotten much out of anyway. It’s like the story of the guy who started out with a paper clip and traded it for other things until eventually he ended up with a house in trade and all that dude really gave up was a paper clip.

by Cormican on Dec 9, 2025 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

What really shocks and disturbs me is the amount of Yankee fans who are upset about this trade.

They have up nothing important to the 09 team, added no payroll and gave up nobody with a particularly high ceiling (ie better than “MLB regular”). They added a 4-5 win CF, who is a media darling and one of the most fun players to watch in baseball - and he’s signed decently long to a team friendly deal.

Yet, insanely, I keep coming across Yankee fans who think they gave up too much(IRL and on the internet)! Austin Jackson just isnt that good. Ian Kennedy just isnt that good. Phil Coke was a 26 year old rookie with middle releiver stuff coming off an OK season with a 4.50 ERA. Each of these guys a) doesnt fit well on the Yanks now or future (rather have Melky AND Gardner than AJax) and b) is eminently replaceable cheaply and easily in free agency, so not at all a concern for NY.

Absolute steal. Brilliant trade for the Yanks. Significant upgrade without giving up anything they love or need.

by alskor on Dec 9, 2025 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

You just can’t please some people. C’Mon, you’ve got enough WS trophies to lend one out to almost every team in baseball, you can live without Austin friggin’ Jackson.

by Cormican on Dec 9, 2025 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

yanks/tigers

Love it for the Yanks because I consider Jackson a nice little player who won’t be significantly better than Melky.

Like it a lot for the Tigers because of Scherzer.

Don’t know what the D-backs were thinking.

by whichthat on Dec 8, 2025 3:56 PM EST reply actions

Posted this on the other thread

I know the Diamondbacks lost, but I’ll try to make an arguement for them (and I’ll post this on both threads). Some view Scherzer as a closer. Perhaps the Dbacks felt this way, and perhaps they know something about Scherzer we don’t. Scherleth I like, but the Diamondbacks seem to have found a good closer in Gutierez. The move isn’t terrible for them. They bought extremely low on Kennedy, who had a fluke injury, and was arm raped by the yankees a la Chamberlain and Hughes. Perhaps the D-backs think they can develop him into a 3rd starter type. Also, let’s not forget, the D-backs could be pretty good next year in a rather weak division. Webb, Haren, Jackson is one of the best top 3 of a rotation when all are healthy. They also have upcoming stars in Upton, Reynolds, etc. It’s a team built on speculation (will Webb be healthy, will Upton take the next step, will Reynolds be able to put up a good avg, will Chris Young stop looking like everyone’s worst fear of Mike Stanton, etc), but this move could work out for them. That being said, the Tigers really found a way to get some great parts, and they’re shaping up to have a terrifying bulpen with coke, scherleth, perry, et al.

i think you have to at least consider the possibility that the D-Backs know more about Scherzer’s arm than anyone else. he’s always been considered an injury risk, and maybe they know something that others don’t.

The only thing I can think of

is that they have serious concerns in terms of off field or attitude with one or both of those guys and theyre happy to shuffle the deck and take two picks in a couple years, or trade EJax in a year. Essentially a “do-over” on Scherzer and Schlereth. Which brings up another point. Maybe theyve gone insane and hate guys whose last names start with s-c-h.

by alskor on Dec 8, 2025 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Obvious total speculation on my part.

Injury concerns also make sense. Same thing, do-over time.

The overall package is what matters, and Granderson is a great all-around player.

I think I'm one of a few people left..

who thinks Ian Kennedy is going to be a good major league pitcher. He did get knocked around in the bigs, no question about it, no argument there. But he’s going to the National League in a weak division and to a young team where the pressure won’t be as great as it was in New York. I like him to produce well in Arizona. I’m rooting for him.

by loop on Dec 8, 2025 5:48 PM EST reply actions

+1

i like him too, he has one bad 38 inning stint with the yankees, and his minor league career is outstanding

by jarjets89 on Dec 8, 2025 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

The NL West is not a weak division

It’s a stronghold for pitching. I’m goddamn sick of people telling me that, it produced 3 teams that were legitimate playoff contenders and arguably has more young talent than any of the NL West divisions, and arguably the MLB.

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.

by bballrox4717 on Dec 8, 2025 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

The flip side of that…

While I understand it gets tougher for Scherzer in moving to the league with the DH, let’s all remember that he’s moving to the AL Central. Sometimes people get out of control with forecasting struggles for a player simply because he’s moving to the AL, whereas I think it would be nice for your team to have 18 games against the Royals’ and Indians’ lineups.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 8, 2025 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

The Indians scored 773 runs last year.

The effect is not overstated. Its typically understated, if anything IMHO.

by alskor on Dec 8, 2025 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

true

and it shouldn’t really matter except in fantasy. Guys are no better or worse in one league or the other; it just will effect their traditional stats, not how good they actually are. Granderson may get a lot of cheap left field homers in Yanke Stadium but he will still be the same guy who played in Detroit.

by wobatus on Dec 9, 2025 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

no kidding...

I’m tired of hearing about how weak the NL West is—I hear this on east coast radio stations all the time. They were collectively 19 games over .500—easily the best division in the NL and the same as the AL East (although I would never claim the NL West is as good). Also, the thing about pitching for the D-Backs, you don’t get to face the D’Backs. The other four teams were 52 games over .500.

by DenverBears on Dec 9, 2025 7:30 AM EST up reply actions

we’ll see i guess. if he comes anything close to his minor league track record, haren-webb-jackson-kennedy is not bad at all. i feel like i am forgetting someone…oh well.

Tigers are big winners, Yankees close second

Tigers made out for the most value. They might have “lost out” on Granderson trade, but got way, way more than anyone would’ve expected for Jackson. Seriously. Max Scherzer was arguably the most valuable player that changed hands, when factoring in talent and cost control.

by Blicks on Dec 8, 2025 8:54 PM EST reply actions

It would be hard for the deal not to be a win for both the Tigers and Yankees

given how cracked out Arizona’s decision was. They just gave away like $40M worth of value.

I think it’s split reasonably evenly between the two, slight edge to the Yankees. I’m not high on any of the prospects the Yankees gave up, but I AM high on Scherzer. Schlereth is OK, nothing special. Jackson’s a crazily overrated mediocrity. (Actually that’s true of both “Jacksons” in this trade.)

Granderson, as long as you platoon him, is an All-Star talent.

Even with the injury concerns, he is still worth more than EJ. If he is injured, his value + replacement will still be higher than EJ.

Plus his upside is much higher and he will make a fraction of EJ’s salary.

Not nessecerily

If they think Scherzer is an arm injury waiting to happen, Jackson was not a mirage and they underrate Granderson… so pretty unlikely, but not insanely so.

by David Tokarz on Dec 9, 2025 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

So your point is something like:

“You don’t have to be insane to vote DBacks in this pole - you could just be incompetent "

I agree. Technically speaking, you could just have no clue how to properly value baseball players while at the same lacking any sort of actual, definable mental illness, per se…

For instance, Bill Bavasi was fired from his position, but not commited to an insane asylum. Though, actually, he may very well have been insane. Thinking Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez… and Asdrubal Cabrera for Eduardo Perez… and Choo for Ben Broussard… etc… So, good chance he actually was insane, I guess.

by alskor on Dec 9, 2025 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much

I don’t know if it’s entirely incompetence if the D-Backs have major concerns with Scherzer’s and Scherleith’s mechanics, but without that information, you’d have to be kinda slow to think that the D-Backs did anything but push here.

Rebuttal

Even if they thought Scherzer’s arm was going to fall off in the next few hours, they still sold his rights at a severe discount. Then they added a power lefty, aka a Matt Thornton type. To me, that’s a screamingly bad trade.

BTW, I wanted to imply that they were taking those narcotics voluntarily. :) But you’re inference works for me too. ;)

I reject your reality and substitute my own.
