Prediction of BA's Marlins Top 10

BA's Marlins list will be coming out tomorrow (Wednes).  Here's my stab at what it will look like:

1 - Christian Yelich

2 - Jose Fernandez

3 - Marcel Ozuna

4 - Matt Dominguez

5 - J.T. Realmuto

6 - Chad James

7 - Scott Cousins

8 - Rob Rasmussen

9 - Kyle Jensen

10 - Noah Perio/Jose Urena

Pretty thin system so kind of hard to predict this list.  I'm sure they'll have some surprises for us.  Your thoughts?

Chad James 6th?

I don’t know enough about their system to really warrant a stab at things right now, but didn’t the stuff look good this summer? Still a solid 4-pitch guy with above average fastbal velo, I thought.

Hard for me to see him this low. I like him better than Realmuto, I think, and I’m not sure I wouldn’t rate him ahead of Dominguez, Ozuna, and Fernandez.

But that’s me.

I don't think the stuff has been a big issue

Command and turning the stuff into results has, though.

It’s a very thin system, but the top 6 should be useful players, at the very least. Lots of ways you can take them, too . . .I think BA will keep Dominguez at No. 2, but I love Fernandez if he can stick in the rotation.

James

Well, this is a prediction of BA will do. He was not on the FSL Top 20 list at all, and in the chat they said he wasnt even close. So his stock apparently has dropped considerably at BA. They may put him even lower than #6. Personally, I thought this years’ stats were pretty good, despite his not winning his first game until around July sometime.

Some guys just traded Yellich for Makiel Cleto in my league a few weeks ago

I bagged on him for making a terrible trade, but what do you guys think? How horrible is it?

Dominguez 2nd...

I’m betting he gets one more year to prove he can be at least an average bat.

It's got to be Marcell Ozuna 2nd, right?

I’d have Ozuna-Christina Yelich practically tied with a slight edge to Ozuna because I feel he has more pure upside but I am high on both. I can’t imagine that Ozuna is ranked below a player who needs to ‘prove he can be at least an average bat’ (which I don’t disagree with) for that would be a disservice to Ozuna’s talent in my opinion. Practically anything is possible though, right?

My Top 5 guess for them is:

Yelich
Ozuna
Jake Realmuto
Matt Dominguez
Chad James

I was more predicting what BA would do, not suggesting the order that they should be in...

BA has always had a healthy crush on MD, and I didn’t think they would move him from #2 due to the wrist injury setback.

I hear you

But props to them for recognizing the talent difference & going with MO. I think he’s Florida’s most talented prospect & both he & Yelich are much more athletic than generally realized by many. Ozuna just turned 21 & Yelich doesn’t turn 20 until next month too so they were both well under league average in the South Atlantic League last year making their steps forward all the more compelling.

I agree those are two impressive prospects

I’ll say that Dominguez might look better as a hitter If he was pushed so greatly by Flortida. He was playing a full seasdon at AA ball at Ozuna’s age. That’s a lot tyo ask of a kid, especially If he isn’t really a great hitting talent. I have no idea If this will serve him as a big leaguer or, hinder him. Just making a point about the context of his numbers.

Good observation

It is interesting how aggressively Dominguez was handled by Florida to me too. Not that he was necessarily undeserving of any of the promotions or anything but he does seem like the type that might have been aided by a little additional acclimation at each level. He was very good as an 18 year old in the South Atlantic League early on & maybe this gave then confidence.

Speaking of Florida, I’m still not sure what purpose having former Top 10 pick Kyle Skipworth skip over the FSL entirely at barely 21 (& with considerably less results than Dominguez even) served this past campaign.

by Matt0330 on Nov 3, 2025 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

Dominguez had some notable splits that year, IIRC, benefiting from the offense-happy Greensboro environment. I think he was moved quickly in large part because his glove was good enough to warrant play at higher levels - much like some poor defenders are moved up the ladder because their bats can play.

I still wonder just a little if perhaps Dominguez, as good as he is at third, couldn’t play shortstop. If he was even average there, that would relieve much of the pressure on his bat, and there’s more reason to believe he could handle it than most players.

The Skipworth move remains a fine enigma. He had repeated in Greensboro already, perhaps they didn’t want him spending a third year against A ball competition? He had major approach-based flaws, maybe they wanted him facing pitchers who could exploit those flaws constantly to try to work it out of him?

by mrkupe on Nov 3, 2025 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

That's interesting

I like what you’re implying re: Skipworth. I think almost all of it could be the case with him (of course, he seemed to be absolutely overwhelmed in the Southern League & will almost certainly be heading back). I can’t say I’m too hopeful though.

agree

I think it’s something like
Yelich
Dominguez
James
Ozuna (maybe flipped w/ James)
Fernandez
Realmuto

The actual list:

1. Christian Yelich, of
2. Marcell Ozuna, of
3. Jose Fernandez, rhp
4. Matt Dominguez, 3b
5. J.T. Realmuto, c
6. Chad James, lhp
7. Rob Rasmussen, lhp
8. Noah Perio, 2b
9. Scott Cousins, of
10. Adam Conley, lhp

Nine of the guys I listed were on their list and none of them were off by more than 2 spots. Conley was the only guy I didnt list at all. Not familiar w him, altho I’d heard of him. I wonder how close Jensen was to making the list. Never even heard of Chris Hatcher, who they list as the future closer.

by rhd on Nov 2, 2025 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

I give you props...

I didn’t think they would put both Ozuna and Fernandez ahead of MD, so good call on that one.

I had to look up Hatcher as well, even though he did throw in the bigs in 2011 - he’s a convert: catcher to pitcher, a la Motte (and many others these days).

Hatcher

Wow, interesting! He’s 26 y/o and was a catcher up until this year. Pitched very well at AA, not so well in a brief MLB stint. Maybe he can follow in Troy Percival’s footsteps.

I'd take these rankings with a grain of salt

some of his comments in the chat has me less than enthused about his opinion of the organization’s prospects.
