Andrew Brackman a Free Agent
The Yankees just declined their 2012 option on Andrew Brackman, and due to the special terms of Brackman's initial pro contract, this makes him a free agent, and perhaps one of the most intriguing free agents in recent memory for several reasons:
1) Brackman spent a year on the MLB DL after signing, so he has burned one year of big-league service time, but should have five years of control remaining. I'm not completely sure about this, though, as his arbitration clock may have started when he accumulated that first full-year of time. If someone has the answer to this, that'd be huge to know.
2) Brackman is a 6'10" fireballing hulk on the mound, whose pure stuff - all numbers and context aside - ought to give him Ace/closer upside.
3) Of course, he was freaking terrible this year. 33 games - 11 of which were starts - at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with a 75:75 K:BB ratio in 96 innings and a 6.00 ERA.
4) After posting a 41:54 K:BB and 6.52 ERA as a starter, Brackman went to relief and was better, with a 34:21 K:BB ratio in 36.2 innings over 20 relief appearances.
5) A 34:21 K:BB ratio in 36.2 innings is still bad. Then he worked three relief appearances (2.1 innings) in the big-leagues and walked three guys, striking out none and allowing a hit, although he didn't allow any runs to score.
Reclamation project guys like Brackman are usually prime candidates to get MiLB deals for a year, but with Brackman possibly under control for five years, how much money does he get on the free market? Has to be more than the $500,000 that the option was worth in the minor leagues, right?

The contract dynamics make it potentially interesting
As a prospect, he is only marginally interesting at this point. I doubt anyone pays him much of anything.

I agree
& disagree with the contention that Andrew Brackman is one of the more interesting FAs in recent memory. Most interesting FAs that used to play ACC basketball, sure.

Someone on MLBTR seems to think
That he’s out of options. This probably means a split contract, with whoever giving him the most money in the event that he’s on the big-league roster and a solid chance to make it likely winning the sweepstakes.

I believe Brackman is out of options.
I watched him pitch in September and was still very interested in his stuff. It’s still really good. He still has limited idea of where it’s going, but his mechanics were pretty fluid and his stuff is still darn good. Still interesting to me, but far from the most interesting FA for quite awhile. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone gave him a nice option somewhere, though, probably as a RP.

No doubt
So do I, but you never know what our guys in the minors can do for a prospect. Can’t have too many arms.
