Prospects moving up
It's been a couple of months since most of the major publications (BA, John, etc.) have finalized their yearly prospect rankings. It has been three months since we started our community list. While we haven't gotten a lot of new information since then, to change our views, we have gotten some including trades, injuries, spring training results and the chatter from team officials that accompanies this part of the year.
My question is, leaving aside players who were already considered top prospects going into this spring, is there anyoje who has really jumped jumped up in your ratings over the past couple of months to the point that you now think that they are significantly under-rated if you rely solely on the annual publications.
I'll propose two for the Rangers.
The first is 26 year old Alexi Ogando. It's cheating a bit to name him I suppose insofar as the reason why he wasn't in the books is because he was banned from entering the US for the past several years because he was caught up in a citizenship scam, but his visa situation was finally resolved after several years. In four appearances this spring he has thrown 4 innings, allowed three hits and one walk while striking out 4. Small sample size warning noted, he throws a high nineties fastball with pretty solid control, and put up ridiculous numbers in the Dominican Leagues over the past couple of years while he was stuck there. He is still up but will not make the team. However, he is going to start no lower than Frisco, and could be in the majors in a late inning role as soon as this summer. If you told me that he would close next year for the Rangers I would be surprised, but not shocked.
The other player I have in mind is Mitch Moreland. He has universally gotten decent but not top ratings as a prospect, (a B- from John, for instance) noting on the positive side his ability to hit, and on the negative his lack of speed, and fielding ability (although he should be able to be passable at 1b or a corner outfield position). He hit .333 this spring with only 2 strike outs against 4 walks in 21 at bats. He will start at OKC and if he hits there will have nothing less to prove. He is exactly the sort of guy who often gets downgraded because his best tool is really his skill at hitting and could help the team at ab (although kind of blocked) or in an outfield corner if one of the current four were injured or traded.
I'm not saying to take either of these guys over Martin Perez or Justin Smoak in your fantasy draft, but both could make a significant contribution at the major league level as soon as this year and should be on your radar screen.
Others?

Starlin Castro
Some were already quite bullish on him, but the kid, at just 20 years old, made a strong play to start off the season on the North Side. I have no problem seeing him now as a top 20 prospect
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

Never was he...
under rated. I think he was rated a little highly, but most people had him in the 20 range anyway.

That’s as much about Ryan Theriot and the current roster construction as it is about him being a premium prospect.

Freddie Freeman
His wrist has healed and he’s been hitting very well this spring. Look for him to have a break out year.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Tigers....
Austin Jackson has looked perfect defensively in CF. Buster Olney tweeted something to the effect that scouts are saying he’s looks drastically better hitting the curve ball. ST stats don’t mean much, but they are strong too. The 8K/6BB are most encouraging.
He’s the only one I would call underrated, and who has generated buzz the past month that should be noticed. Other Tiger notes…..
Jacob Turner, while not underrated, still wowed everybody, featuring a nasty curve and ‘mound presence,’ if you believe such a thing exists. Got a good role model to follow in Porcello, if he wants to be good.
Avila has put up good numbers, but haven’t heard much really. Probably won the backup position. He may or may not be underrated, but he’s probably not going to get much time this year, and lose his prospect eligibility.
On the flip side, Scott Sizemore has shown he can play good enough D and seems to be getting healed from the broken leg, but he started off real slow with the bat. It’s still his job, though, and his K/BB ratio was still 8/8.
Schlereth needs work as well. Didn’t come close to earning a spot in the bullpen.

Dennis Raben...
he’s nowhere near a top-100 prospect, but after missing all of 2009 he’s healthy, swinging the bat well, and absolutely crushing high-A pitching down at minor league camp.
