Spring Training: Who are you watching?

I believe by week's end every team will have started their spring training schedule.   I love this time of year for several reasons but one of the biggest is that I get to see really good, young prospects show what they can do in big league camp (if only for a moment).    So who are you watching this spring?  Who is that one guy that will cause you to sit through a whole game just to see him pitch his one inning or get his one AB?

For me, I have the two obvious ones (Heyward and Strasburg) but being a Rangers fan Im definitely looking forward to Mitch Moreland's showing this spring.   So, who are you watching?

Look what he did yesterday. Nice to see that one of his HR was from the right side.

by Jordan Tuwiner on Mar 4, 2010 11:35 AM EST reply actions

any chance he breaks with the club?

even with the additions of Tejada and Atkins?

by ScottAZ on Mar 5, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it

He hasn’t had an at-bat at AAA yet and there is no need to rush him

Hellickson

that is someone i need to add to my list. Did you see him play in the minors?

As an Indians fan I’m excited to see some our top prospects such as Santana, but most of them won’t make the team. I’m more curious to find out who will make the rotation and bullpen and how some of the “veterans” like Carmona perform.

Brignac

and if they are going to play him at 2B all spring…

Heyward and his new muscles.

Kelly Shoppach. want him to win the starting job over the fat bum navarro

by daveh33 on Mar 4, 2010 11:57 AM EST reply actions

I don’t understand why the rays won’t swap him for another prospect unless they think Tim beckham isn’t all that special anymore.

by Ahmed Abukar on Mar 4, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

obviously nobody's offered them good enough value yet

for Bartlett or Brignac.

I don’t think Bartlett will be the starting SS in 2011.

by daveh33 on Mar 4, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Unless Brignac shows improvement with his bat,

I can see Bartlett being the starting SS for a couple of years. I think Brignac moves to 2B for the time being though… Even if Bartlett regresses, Brignac still has to prove he can hit MLB pitching.

That being said,

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Desmond Jennings does in ST. I’m slightly concerned with his power translating to the show, but I believe he’s going to be a very good player.

well he was HBP

on his elbow yesterday. some swelling, but they say he’s OK

by daveh33 on Mar 4, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

I think Bartlett will at least be a league average player for the next few years at a quality position, that’s 100x more valuable then a what if player like brignac or beckham even he has a high ceiling.

by Ahmed Abukar on Mar 4, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

What about $

Bartlett will be significantly more expensive than Brignac – Rays have to consider that more than many teams

by FI2 on Mar 4, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Brignac is pretty much league average even if he doesn't swing his bat

His D >> Bartlett’s D.

and let’s get real, Bartlett had a great season last year, and that likely won’t be repeated

by daveh33 on Mar 4, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

yeah unlikely to repeat but if he is somewhere between that and the year before plus his solid defense I think Rays are in good hands until he is a free agent or one of the other prospects prove they are ready. Especially considering that the majors are generally weak in producing shortstops.

Braves

Beyond the obvious Jason Heyward, getting to see Brandon Hicks (who homered yesterday!), Freddie Freeman and Craig Kimbrel along with Cody Johnson, make the innings go by fast.

Felt bad for Cody and Freddie in the first game, they both had to face Pedro Feliciano in their first ST at bat. Lefties just don’t hit that guy much.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Marlins

Does Logan Morrison win the 1B job out of spring training? How long before the Fish promote Mike Stanton? Is Matt Dominguez a legit prospect? How long will it take Chad James to get through the system?

by psugator on Mar 4, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

I don't understand why some people seem so down on Matt Dominguez

I recognize that he isn’t the star people thought he’d be, but I’d still rather have him than, say, Josh Bell

Agreed

I’ve argued in favor of Dominguez ad naseum. He has good plate discipline, good power and great defense. I think there are three things that are hurting his perceived value:

1. Playing next to Mike Stanton
2. Going from an extreme hitters park to an extreme pitchers park. I was actually more impressed with his FSL season than his SAL season
3. Absurdly low BABIPs in AA (.225) and the AFL (.184) that are assuredly a sample size issue

He is a top 50 prospect for me.

he's really destroying the ball right now

Hellickson looked good today… tried to see if there was any reason for concern like the dudes at Project Prospect were saying… all I saw was that he seemed to open up / plant his front foot a bit early, but it didn’t look that bad… his fastball looked like an easy 92. [according to YES network]

oh yeah

Brignac = silk.

Yea...

For me it’s not a question of if he can hit, it’s whether his body will avoid breaking down.

I still would have him ranked for sure, though.

He looked very strong today…4 K’s and 3 ground outs in the 7 batters he faced.

CC and Jesus

Want to see how both Chris Carter and Montero do against some actual big league pitching. I can’t see Barton holding back a ‘special’ bat [BB’s words] like CC for very long. A’s manager said the HR Carter hit yesterday went over 500 ft and he didn’t even square the pitch up.

I think Jesus could be up a lot quicker others, too.
