MiLB 5/1: The Daily Thread To Restore Sanity and/or Fear

No, I don't have your probables for today. Games are going on today, however, so I'm sure there will be pitchers involved, some of them right-handed, others left-handed.

The reason why I am posting the daily thread is because some things should be made very clear and they need to be at the very top of the post so that I can ensure that nobody misses them.

1) Posting about players and their daily performances happens to be the entire point of these threads. If you disagree with somebody's opinions, feel free to post about why you disagree with them. This does not mean that you can feel free to post about why somebody should stop posting about a certain player or topic - sorry, that's actually exactly NOT what the threads are for. If you have a problem with somebody's posting habits take it to e-mail, preferably mine, and stop cluttering the threads with your objections.

2) Baiting and/or posting something specifically for the purpose of antagonizing other posters is never acceptable. Think before you post, please - we're all real people, and yes, I imagine we all do get ticked off when somebody else calls us out in a thread to tell us how dumb our ways of thinking are.

3) I mentioned this in the last daily, but multiple account use is not allowed. Just don't do it, there are good reasons for this policy.

4) Do not under any circumstances accuse somebody else publicly of multiple account use. If you're right, then e-mail keeps the problem minimized on the threads and works just fine. If you're wrong, then you've just insulted another poster and you've probably riled everybody else up too.

Consider all issues that have come up in the threads over the last several days to be resolved. Back to your regularly scheduled programming . . .

Info on T.J. Rivera?

Seems to have a nice bat for a SS. Was in the Giants’ system and now with the Mets, where he might have a shot now that Valdespin has shifted to CF. Out of the gate strong; maybe a little old for the level? Looking for feedback…

by Hairylady on May 1, 2025 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

Giants?

I think you might have him confused with someone else, as TJ Rivera was undrafted last year out of Troy College…

He’s off to an excellent start yes, but he’s very old for his level (23 in Low-A). Maybe he could be a Josh Satin type, but the odds on him becoming a useful major leaguer are quite long if you ask me. Being a local boy it would be a great story though…

Thanks for putting down the hammer

I love the MiLB threads, and I love good natured and witty memes in them - like Jose Altuve as Tyrion Lannister, but the outright bickering the last few days has been beyond annoying.

by pedrophile on May 1, 2025 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

Since it is May 1st

I’m wondering if there’s any “storylines” or under-the-radar guys (acknowledging for somewhat SSS) from the first month for organizations. I really don’t follow the entire minors as much as I used to. This might be better off in a separate spot, but I figured that this may be a way to get some separate discussion going (and there really wasn’t an exciting Cubs probable starter to post about).

I’ll post my thoughts on the Cubs, but I’m interested to learn about other organizations (for example, I’m fascinated with Jarret Martin of the Dodgers … a bit older, but the early numbers look intriguing when combined with the fact that all indications are that he had a noticeable velocity jump).

For the Cubs -

- Seems to be some sort of mandate, of sorts, to … show more discipline. Several guys have seen noticeable bumps.

- Matt Szczur has finally gotten hot, in all the right ways, showing some pop, showing good discipline and approach. The reports sound good, but it’s only 2 weeks.

- Not many “breakouts” on the positional side. Maybe Rubi Silva falls into that classification, but he’s slumped a tiny bit after a ridiculous start (for him). A lot of guys mashing AAA … but they’ve done that before.

- On the pitching side, some intriguing starts in Peoria with Jensen, Francescon, Burke (but Francescon and Burke are a bit older … granted, Burke just went back to pitching). Very pleased with Ben Wells start to the season. Some Cubs fans may start pushing a “Free Yao-lin Wang” campaign soon.

That’d be my general take on the first month of the year for the Cubs full-season affiliates.

Leonys Martin

for Texas, at Round Rock certainly seems to be breaking out. He had very good numbers in AA but struggled last year on promotion. Currently doing very well. I would think a mid-season promotion would be in order. Has anyone seen him live this year?

by pedrophile on May 1, 2025 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

does anybody know if the Round Rock starter tonight is Martin Perez or Michael Kirkman?

I’m not sure at the moment, but if Perez is on the mound I might be able to go take a look for you.

by mrkupe on May 1, 2025 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

k

Kirkman is the listed starter on the Round Rock site, but the short preview for the game on the team’s site says Perez.

by mrkupe on May 1, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

"Has anyone seen him live this year?"

Yes, both in the AFL after last year and in spring training.

He had a bit of a quad problem in the spring, otherwise I think he would have had a legit shot at the opening day CF job.

by mlbprospectpulse on May 1, 2025 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

How does he project?

Is his D good enough for an every day CF? And where would you see his triple slash line given he is playing in Texas?

by pedrophile on May 1, 2025 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

"Is his D good enough for an every day CF?..."

Oh, absolutely.

He’s got the best OF arm in the system, and is as natural an outfielder you can find, outside of Hamilton. Guys will catch one in BP and you think it’s a gapper, and then you look up and he’s standing there waiting for the ball to come down.

Martin was a teammate in Cuba with Cespedes, and his workout partner. Once he signed with Texas, they got him to back off with the bodybuilding exercises, he had really gotten tight, which cost him.

Now that he’s back to a more natural body type, his swing has loosened up like it had been when he played in the WBC, and he’s running on the bases more.

I think he’s a .300 hitter easily at the major league level, but he’s not strictly a slash hitter like Juan Pierre used to be. He’s a strong guy naturally and has good hands, I’ve seen him hit some moonshots, even by Arizona standards.

I have a hard time calling him a prospect because of his pro experience in Cuba, but I also can’t understand why he flies so far under the radar compared to Cespedes or even Jorge Soler.

He’s a fun guy to watch.

by mlbprospectpulse on May 1, 2025 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

thanks for the great writeup

I have read a lot about him and it was all very vanilla with quite low expectations. Since I haven’t seen him it’s all I could go on. But based on the numbers I expected/believed/hoped there was a lot more to him. What with the discipline, solid power, avg, etc. it looked like he was just a very good hitter.

by pedrophile on May 2, 2025 3:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Cespedes

One thing to note. While Martin & Cespedes were team mates, it was Martin playing CF and Cespedes was in RF.

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

Szczur

I haven’t seen any clips, but the numbers have been insane over the last 10 games. Any word on his D?

by Woodland League on May 1, 2025 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

He takes a great path to the ball and his speed helps him cover a lot of ground.

He has a quick first step and has shown a strong ability to make some pretty tough catches. Only real weakness I’ve seen is his arm, which will probably be average for a CFer at best.

You’re right though, his last 10 games have really been a break out for him.

by Woodland League on May 1, 2025 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

haven't seen him this year

but last year in Peoria when I saw him, he was extremely instinctive in center, and like bdlugz said took excellent routes to the ball. his arm seemed definitely more average than plus, but I did see him make a nice one-hop throw from mid-center to get a guy at the plate, so it could be better than average in the end. Haven’t made it to a game this year, but he made a game-ending catch against the wall with men on base the other night which was supposedly spectacular.

Pirates

Awesome

Alen Hanson - .410/.441/.695, 6:23 BB:K in 105 AB, 10SB/4CS (19 year old in Low-A)

Alaldberto Santos - .396/.484/.472, 9:5 BB:K in 53 AB (under the radar potential utility guy;lowest AVG/OBP he’s put up in the minors is .314/.392)

Starling Marte - .276/.351/.483, 7:22 BB:K in 87 AB, 9SB/1CS (strikeout rate is high, but BB rate is up from 3.8% last year to 7.1% thus far this year)

Rudy Owens - 26.0 IP, 19H, 6ER (5HR), 19K, 1BB

Justin Wilson - 30.0IP, 18H, 10ER, 31K, 16BB (Last start: 7.1 IP, 0H, 0ER, 2BB, 9K)

Jeff Locke - 28IP, 29H, 9ER, 7BB, 23K

Not so Awesome

Robbie Grossman - .195/.298/.280, 11:20 BB:K in 82 AB

Josh Bell - .274/.288/.403, 2:21 BB:K in 62 AB (very ugly), out for an extended period of time with a torn meniscus

Stetson Allie - .2 IP, 1H, 4ER, 8BB, K and plenty of wild pitches and hit batsmen (back to EST)

Nick Kingham - 14.2IP, 22H, 14ER, 8BB, 11K

Alex Dickerson - .256/.319/.349 (no power), 8:17 BB:K ratio in 86 AB

Meh

Tony Sanchez - .259/.338/.379, 6:17 BB:K in 58 AB

Zack Dodson - 20IP, 22H, 10ER, 8BB, 18K

Kyle McPherson - Been on the DL all year

Guess this was more of an org. overview than under the radar guys, but Hanson and Santos are it for the Pirates. Mel Rojas Jr. was having a nice season but it mired in an awful slump.

You got me hooked on Polanco

Where does he fall for you?

by charles wallace on May 1, 2025 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually hadn't looked at Polanco in a bit

Very happy to see a 8:19 BB:K ratio in 91 AB. He’s only struck out 4 times in his last 40 AB. That brought him from a 29.4 K% to a 20.8 K% (using K/AB) rate.

.286/.343/.495 Showing plenty of power

Excellent tools. True centerfielder currently in a 6’4,170 lb frame

Still, he’ll turn 21 in August, so he’s behind on an ideal timeline. Plus, this is his first year doing it, unlike Alen Hanson who had an excellent first half season last year before fading. Therefore, comparing them, Hanson has a better track record, is currently slated in a more valuable defensive position, and is a nearly a year younger. I like Hanson much more, but it’s nice to see a guy like Polanco, who has massive, lottery-ticket upside, starting to figure things out.

Hanson is definitely in my top 20 while Polanco might be close to sneaking in.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on May 1, 2025 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Good stuff

I absolutely don’t compare him straight up to Hanson. That said, the tools are promising, CF positional value is intriguing, and I find the performance as across-the-board solid as you neatly outlined. I can’t hold his age against him as he’s 20 for most of the season. If he can post a wOBA in the .360 range as he is currently it’ll be a great start. Thanks for pointing him out.

by charles wallace on May 1, 2025 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

His power

is a pretty big revelation, since that was really the only thing missing from his game. Looking at his past years, his plate discipline has actually been solid and he’s had some incredibly unlucky BABIPs. His BABIP looks fairly normal now and his ISO is over .200 so color me impressed and suddenly you have that nice 800+ OPS. That’s a good looking number for a guy who’s ARL is solid and has plenty of future defensive value as a CF.

Josh Bell – .274/.288/.403, 2:21 BB:K in 62 AB (very ugly), out for an extended period of time with a torn meniscus

I know it’s early McCutch, but should there be some worries?

by JoelGuzman'sScout on May 1, 2025 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends how

you define “worried”

I never saw Bell as the top 50 type prospect most people did. I had him at 92. His age (Bell will turn 20 in August) and the strikeout rate add to that. He’s certainly not a top 100 prospect for me anymore.

Still, he’s got ridiculous potential and natural talent and he’ll start next year at age 20. I’d say best case scenario, Bell gets back in time to get some playing time with the Power to end the year. I’ll basically ignore the stats, except for BB:K, at that point. I hope to see improvement in regard to that stat. From there, the Pirates should send him back to WV to start the year, and hopefully he comes out and just tears up it for 3 weeks at like a .350/.430/.650 type clip with 10% BB and 15% K or something good looking like that. Then a promotion to Bradenton and I’d say he’s back on track.

Pretty quick

To forecast the entire next year of his career, cutch. Pirates haven’t even said how long he’ll be out of the lineup.

by Woo! on May 1, 2025 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think his numbers really matter when he comes back this year

My guess is that he’ll probably go to short season ball . . .but really, BB/K isn’t all that great in isolation. If he just stands at the plate with his bat on his shoulder, that might get him walks but might not be indicative of an improved approach. I say short season ball because the complex leagues will be starting right around the time he should be ready to return, and it’ll probably be easier for him to handle than having to get back into playing form against players who are already well into the season.

He can be a productive player with or without walks. I’d just like to see him back on the field, getting some ABs, being productive in whatever way he’s capable of and ending the year strong, he can figure out the walks next year with a clean bill of health.

As for how long he’ll be out . . .I can’t imagine the Pirates will rush him back and risk screwing up his leg, so I’m guessing a conservative track. This looks like a possible Josh Vitters situation . . .Vitters struggled in the early going, then got hurt, and returned to be the top rated prospect in the Northwest League that year. I could certainly see Bell having a similar next few months.

by mrkupe on May 1, 2025 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn't mind

it. I guess my point is, if Bell comes back and still doesn’t really hit the ball that’s no biggie to me. What could be a “biggie” is if he continues to strikeout at a crazy rate.

That would be the only stat I’d really care about/watch if he comes back.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on May 1, 2025 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

To answer your question succinctly, no, there are no worries

He played less than a month. He showed flashes of all-world potential and he showed flashes of a kid in his first pro season.

Nothing to worry about other than the health of his knee.

by Mr. Smizik on May 1, 2025 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

I worry about. He’s almost 20, he was lauded for his advanced approach, and the numbers indicative of approach were horrendous. This injury, while it certainly doesn’t ruin his prospect status, does prevent him from working on his approach, which seems to be an issue.

I’d have to sit down and actually think about this, but since I’m in the middle of a finals week, I won’t, but I’d consider putting Hanson ahead of him on a prospect list.

He’s the same age as Bell playing at the same level, has a better pro track record, Keith Law really likes his tools, and he’s absolutely crushing the ball right now. Plus, even if Hanson has to move to 2B or CF, he’s got more future defensive value than Bell has/will have.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on May 1, 2025 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You are overreacting

The season is a month old.

by Woo! on May 1, 2025 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't agree with this

The analysis may or may not be wrong (only time will really tell), but his points have nothing to do with 1 month of games, really. He’s talking about age, approach, tools, and positional value, and a little bit of data to be sure, but the argument is not centred on it. I really don’t know enough about either guy to take a side, but I think it’s a cogent argument

by MjwW on May 1, 2025 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Data is only compiled from one month of game though

You knew the age and positional data when Bell was drafted, so the only thing that’s changed is the opinion of the approach, and that’s only being gleaned from under a month of games against his first professional opponents

by Woo! on May 1, 2025 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

It’s not even a month’s worth of at-bats. Any extrapolation of ‘his approach’ based on his first taste of pro pitching is indeed an overreaction.

Also, there’s no reason to compare Hanson and Bell. They’re completely different players w/ completely different pedigrees and skillsets.

Give the kid more than 3 weeks of games……

by Mr. Smizik on May 1, 2025 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not quite true

If you look at the stats that stablize quickest, the several of the ones that relate to approach stabilize earliest: swing rate (50 PA), K rate (150 PA), BB rate (200 PA). Now, Bell didn’t get to either of those last two thresholds, but even in one month you can start to make some general inferences, especially from something like 2/21 K/BB ratio when the approach that leads to those numbers is supposed to be a strength. It’s not beyond the pale or unreasonable to look at those numbers and make a reassessment. If it was something like BA/OBP/SLG, which take far more PA to stabilize, yeah, I’d agree, but you need a lot less data to talk about things related to appraoch

Just a note

Billy Hamilton is freaking good. I know that he’s punchless and can’t sustain anywhere close to the batting average he currently has, but I have faith he can be a solid hitter for average in the majors if he keeps taking the steps he has so far in his pro career. I recently moved him up to 21st on my board and I think that is probably about his ceiling due to the defensive and power question marks, but I’m really bullish on him. What a unique and exciting prospect.

by kyuss94 on May 1, 2025 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

whatever his average ends up being

if he maintains the improvement in his BB rate (13.5%, up from 8.5% last year) that would have a pretty significant impact given his style of play. Over a full season, that’s 30-35 more times on base, and for a guy with superhuman speed…look out.

yeah, before he reached AAA

And yes, Triple A is hard. It reveals a lot of uncomfortable truths about prospects, something that I tend to think a lot of teams would prefer to avoid or at least delay by skipping their prospects past it and having the excuse of aggressive promotion to lean on.

I think you're reaching on this one, Kupe

That sounds alot like they are planning for their guys to fail, and adjusting accordingly, instead of helping them develop to the point where they won’t fail.

by Woo! on May 1, 2025 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think so

Teams try to corner the market of opinion on their players all the time. Nobody plans for their players to fail, but I’m sure the top guys in major league organizations know better than anybody else the attrition rate of prospects.

That’s why you see things like Bryce Harper getting called up “because the team couldn’t do worse” and “to fill in for injuries”. Both sides have an out - if he sucks, then “he wasn’t expected to do much now anyways”, and if he’s solid, then he’s a pleasant surprise and then people start talking about just how good he could be once he’s acclimated.

We see the same thing in the minors all the time with pitching prospects. Teams will often say their pitchers are “working on something” - it used to be secondary pitches, but now fastball command has become the popular excuse. If the guy is getting lit up, then you have the excuse that the player is focusing on something else and can’t be expected to perform as well as possible. If he’s pitching well, then everything’s great - except now, you can say “and just imagine how good he’ll be once he gets to pitch normally!” It’s not unexpected for organizations to do this, especially with so much time and money invested in these players, but it is definitely something that they do, and for very good reasons.

Yankees

were famous for aggressively promoting players that had approach flaws. I remember Navarro getting promoted like crazy and everyone used the ARL argument and the Yankees traded him. It turns out he was extremely lazy, terrible attitude (ie uncoachable) and not a good approach. But since he hit OK while promoted aggressively, hey he would be so much better when he got time at a level.

they did that with a bunch of dudes

So did the Mets . . .and the Tigers . . .and the Dodgers . . .

Am I the only person still left on the Greg Miller bandwagon, by the way?

by mrkupe on May 1, 2025 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly how is his bat solid?

Since 2009, here are his slash lines:

A: .273/.326/.387 (.713)
A+: .256/.340/.359 (.699)
AA: .275/.335/.390 (.730)
AAA: .255/.279/.462 (.741)
AAA: /204/.290/.278 (.568)

I don’t understand what people see in this guy that make them think he can hit in the majors. He can’t even hit in the minors. Yeah yeah, he’s young for the leagues, but he’s 22 and in AAA and hasn’t hit well at any stop in the minors.

by Looney4baseball on May 1, 2025 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Those are league average numbers in leagues where a majority never see the majors.

Those aren’t remotely close to showing his bat is solid. He’s a middle of the road prospect and an epic fail for a #1 overall pick.

by Looney4baseball on May 1, 2025 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, lol

Look up some history to see the success rates of #1 picks. The Rays aren’t going to all of a sudden cut a ton 10 prospect (as rated by Baseball America) in a good system because of his weed use. I’m not defending him, just giving you the truth.

by mr. maniac on May 1, 2025 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Its way too early to give up

specially after the investment that has already been made. If its another drug then I’ll be more than concern but if its weed what ever. As long as he wants to play he’ll get a chance by someone and the Rays are still in no position to give up.

XandyMan Coming for you!!!!1

by DominicanDandy on May 1, 2025 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course he'll be given more chances.

But that is based on his draft pick status/investment and not on his actual talent. Hell, Matt Bush got several chances and he makes Beckham look like Matt Kemp. If Beckham were a 9th round draft pick, they would have cut him already.

by Looney4baseball on May 1, 2025 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

So in essense, your argument is based on

his status of being the #1 overall pick and that they have too much invested in him to give up on him because of his mediocre statistics and off the field issues. Nothing based on his actual ability and production, got it.

As far as looking at the overall #1 picks, currently 20 of the 47 made at least 1 all star team and only 2 never made the majors (excluding Gerrit Cole and Beckham). So 43 of 45 at least made the majors and 20 of 45 made at least 1 all star game. There will be more Hall of Famers (Griffey, ARod, Chipper Jones) than players that never made the majors.

Ultimately, Beckham is a failure as a prospect.

by Looney4baseball on May 1, 2025 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Making the majors doesn't mean squat, especially since Beckham will.

There are three hall of fame players. That alone gives you an answer.

by mr. maniac on May 1, 2025 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

What you're overlooking

is that many of the others had solid major league careers and are still in the middle of them as well as almost half made at least 1 all star team, where Beckham will never see. I really don’t see what a straw man debate about the #1 draft picks has to do with Beckham’s ability and prospect status. The only reason why Beckham has any prospect status is where he was drafted, not his stats or ability any longer. It’s why the arguments for Beckham are based mainly on his draft status and how much money is invested in him and not on his production/makeup because there is little of that.

by Looney4baseball on May 2, 2025 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I really don't know what to say besides that you are wrong.

I’ve interviewed Callis, Piliere, John, etc.. and the reason Beckham is rated where he is is because of who he is, not where he was selected.

by mr. maniac on May 2, 2025 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You can tell me I'm wrong from today till tomorrow

and provide who you’ve interviewed (like you did) and I really don’t care. John stated in the 2012 book that he sees him as a utility player, not a regular, so I don’t see how John agrees with you there. No idea where Callis, Piliere, etc. have him, but if Beckham were a 9th round draft pick, he likely wouldn’t even be mentioned as a prospect. He’s as irrelevant as a prospect as WIlmer Flores is.

um

i think Beckham is a pretty bad prospect myself

but you do realize, that the expected value of a No. 7 prospect, even in a system as deep as Tampa’s, is a utility player right?

by blue bulldog on May 2, 2025 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

While the No. 7 prospect may become a utility player,

that’s their worst case scenario. There’s a lot more upside players in the Rays system and Beckham is going to fall fast, watch.

by Looney4baseball on May 2, 2025 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

BA ranked him in the top 10?

That’s the last time I’ll bother looking at their rankings. Thanks.

by Looney4baseball on May 1, 2025 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I knew he meant the Rays system.

No one is that dense to put him in the top 10 overall. Even putting him in the Rays top 10 is absurd because the Rays always have a solid farm system and draft well regardless of graduations. BA put Mahtook and Romero under Beckham and left off Sale in their top 30 so it’s hard to give them much creedence to their rankings.

by Looney4baseball on May 2, 2025 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Sale?

You mean the guy who still hasn’t been able to make a full season team? The guy who’s stuck in XST despite turning 21 in 2 months? The guy who can’t hit despite really, really needing to hit because he’ll be limited defensively? The guy who hit .210/.289/.346 in short season ball last year?

Any one of those things and you’d say, wow, that guy might not be all that good a prospect. But what if I told you . . .all of those guys were THE SAME GUY.

by mrkupe on May 2, 2025 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Granted he's been awful,

but giving up on a first round pick after a half a season’s worth of at bats is basically making him the anti-Beckham.

by Looney4baseball on May 2, 2025 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Josh Sale wishes he could play like Tim Beckham

At this point in his career, Beckham was a league average hitter in the Florida State League. And he could projected/projects to play some infield position, whereas Sale is clearly locked into an OF corner or maybe 1B.

This isn’t really a defense of Beckham . . .it’s just that Sale has been a massive disappointment, at least to this point. He doesn’t even have Justin O’Connor’s excuses (futile effort to catch, lotsa injuries).

by mrkupe on May 2, 2025 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Not arguing that.

My point was not giving a first round pick from 2010 any slack at all after a half season worth of at bats seems to be dismissing him completely. It’s not to say he won’t be a massive failure, just that he’s getting the opposite treatment of Beckham.

by Looney4baseball on May 2, 2025 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

not really

I’m not dismissing him completely, but he’s not far from being in the “inconsequential prospect” category. He didn’t hit last year and he’s evidently still not ready for full season ball, which is very troubling. If you’re comparing Sale’s start to his pro career to Beckham’s, there’s no doubt that Beckham’s start looks awesome in comparison - which is part of the reason why he gets treated very differently.

The other thing is that there really isn’t that much wiggle room for Sale. He was drafted in large part on his power potential - he really didn’t offer much else other than plus-to-plus-plus raw power. His defensive value is not very high, at best. He really, really needs to hit if he wants to have any chance to make it. Beckham stands a decent chance of making it in some capacity even if he can’t hit a lot - his glove could play well at 2B/3B/RF and he has some power potential.

i feel like middle/late innings have hurt him a lot lately

thought he was dominating through 4 today and then just seemed to lose it after what appears on Gameday to be a bunt hit

by blue bulldog on May 1, 2025 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Was at the game

Most of the earlier hits were off the first pitch of the at-bat. Surprisingly, it was also a fastball w/o the serious heat - ie. 93ish range (I assume the two seamer). When a runner did get on in the earlier innings, he’d dial it up to a consistent 96 (four-seamer?) Curve was looking good early too. This combo led to a ton of early strikeouts and the hitters were looking lost. Made Simmons just look plain dumb twice.

You could tell the first run really seemed to get under Bauer’s skin. Meaningless hit then a lousy pickoff throw that put the runner on third. When Simmons scored on a ho-hum grounder perfectly up the middle, Bauer smacked his gloved hand against his thigh.

When the Braves got to Bauer in the 6th, he was suddenly mixing in too many changeups. For whatever reason, up to this point, they still hadn’t locked into his good heater nor curve. The only player to hurt him the entire game was Gosselin who had the key sharp single to make it 4-0. Then of course, a pitching change and the first batter whacks a good ball out to center but Clevlen misplayed it pirouetting foolishly which led to Simmons triple and 2 undeserving ER’s.

Overall, Bauer looked good (besides the change). I agree that his approach/mindset appears to be his biggest detractor. Who knows whether it was the manager, catcher or Bauer calling most of those pitches in the 6th but it was detrimental. Also, that fiery competitive nature that was on display in the earlier innings just drained away in the 6th. He really should have just stayed in bulldog mode and forced them to beat his best stuff.

by RedHopeful on May 2, 2025 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

good to know

thanks

i actually somewhat imagined that this might have happened, at least in the sense that when the first few runs were piling in, didn’t look like anything was hit hard on gameday, and i imagined that he probably got frustrated by that, which may have led to some wildness and then the bad ending etc.

changeup didn’t look good then? that’s unfortunate. i’d really like to see him have a good changeup, since we already know the fastball/curveball combo is basically fine.

as for pitch sequencing and mindset….yeah it’s something that Bauer may need to work on. really wish he can get up to the Dbacks soon and work with Montero, because i love the way Montero sequences pitches. unfortunately, this will probably be his last year here with us :(

Thought Wong

was a really nice get by the Cards, and he’s rewarding them so far.

by charles wallace on May 1, 2025 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't wait

for the Cards to finally have a good homegrown MI in their line up. It’s been so long.

by sethbeno on May 1, 2025 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha

We’ll never forget the rally squirrel! However, Skip Schumaker is very forgettable.

by sethbeno on May 1, 2025 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Kolten Wong: Better than Skip Schumaker RIGHT NOW?

I say yes, and that he is the best 2B in the Cards organization at this moment.

The Cardinals seem perfectly content to trot Skip out there every day so I doubt we see Wong get any time outside of September this year, but I really believe he could help if given a chance.

What do you guys think?

by oplaid on May 2, 2025 4:39 AM EDT up reply actions

i would just play

Allen Craig there after berkman gets healthy.

by St.Steve on May 2, 2025 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Wong is probably, as of today, the best 2B option for the Cards.

With that said, I don’t expect them to rush him this year.

Slow start so far…

by Kazanovicz on May 1, 2025 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

skaggs

anyone know when he’s throwing again?

bauer threw 4/26 and 5/1, skaggs threw before him on 4/25 but hasn’t pitched since. injury? saving innings?

by TheBigOne on May 1, 2025 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

No problem...

..set your watch though, if you’re planning on following on Gameday..it’s a 12:35 EST start.

by mlbprospectpulse on May 1, 2025 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

any idea why they swapped him with bauer?

my first thought was it might be to line them up with question marks in the big league rotation, but they throw on the same days as cahill and kennedy now.

by TheBigOne on May 1, 2025 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

He was a consideration for a call-up to replace Hudson...

who’s turn was Wednesday.

They pushed him back a day so the ML rotation could stay on track.

Anthony Gose: crazy fast

In the 5th inning tonight, Gose on second, bases loaded none out.

Travis d’Arnaud hits a grounder to first, comes home to get the lead runner, back t first for the double play. Gose scores from second.

Hopefully he can get on base a little more to use the speed

by MjwW on May 1, 2025 11:21 PM EDT reply actions

I’m willing to bet the defense got lackadaisical

by hrv2010 on May 2, 2025 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Almost certainly

But you still have to great speed to take advantage.

by MjwW on May 2, 2025 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

who's win a race between Hamilton, Gordon and Gose?

that’s be pretty exciting.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on May 2, 2025 3:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Hamilton

I don’t think it’s even THAT close, as fast as Gordon and Gose may be.

I would be most interested in a race between Hamilton and Michael Bourn, or at least the Michael Bourn I knew in 2009-2010 (he may have slowed down a step by now).

by OremLK on May 2, 2025 4:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Hamilton, Bourjos, Trout would probably be a good race

Trout seems to be the fastest out of the blocks but at some point Bourjos and Hamilton pass him.

by pedrophile on May 2, 2025 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

George Springer having a great game

He’s 1-2 with a HR, two walks, and a K. Defensively, he threw out Billy Hamilton at the plate.

Not a prospect

But what do you guys think of Jed Lowrie?

1-2 with a HR and 3 BB today.

.303/.410/.470 so far this season, and his defense at shortstop has been looking good.

by OremLK on May 2, 2025 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

I'm praying

he just stays healthy.

by RedHopeful on May 2, 2025 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

really wished at the time

that the Dbacks had explored trading for him this offseason

especially if he was only going to cost a Mark Melancon

by blue bulldog on May 2, 2025 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions

solid

He’s a good one. I can’t believe he’s already 28, though . . .how time flies. I guess durability concerns and the fact that he’s already in the midst of his prime temper the excitement somewhat.

by mrkupe on May 2, 2025 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought in 2010 he was blossoming as a cornerstone type player for the Sox

Since he was posting such a good slash line and it looked so legitimate and well-balanced going by his peripherals.

I feel like the injuries really sapped his production as well as his playing time.

Great pitching performance at High Desert
He has always thrown hard, but usually has a lack of control. Hopefully, the zero BBs is a sign of improvement.

4th year he's pitched at this level, which means

by mrkupe on May 2, 2025 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but it’s not like he’s too old for the level. He’s , what, 22-23? His stuff is still there, too.

@TElciram

by Taylor Maricle on May 2, 2025 12:13 PM EDT via Android app up reply actions

I'm all for evaluating with regard to experience, not age

He’s gotten to pitch at this level in FOUR separate seasons. He’s repeating this level for the THIRD straight full year. That is pretty crazy.

by mrkupe on May 2, 2025 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

As a pitcher, he’s a couple of command improvements away from being in the majors.

Tyrell Jenkins

May have had the best start of his career.

5.2 innings, 1 run, 0 earned, 2 hits(first hit in the 4th inning) 4 bb’s(2 in the 6th inning) and 7k’s.

by scadder21 on May 2, 2025 3:04 AM EDT reply actions

Taveras

In his last 7 games….

12-26, 2 doubles, 4 homeruns, 9 RBI’s 4bb’s and 3k’s

One of the home runs was against Paulino on a rehab stint, another was the first run scored off of lefty specialist Royce Ring. He broke up Edwar Cabrera’s no hitter with a bullet double down the line.

I saw him play quite a bit last year and he’s as good as advertised. Had a totally different skillset last year(hitting the ball hard the opposite field) but now he has a new toy(pulling the ball in the air) and whats happening with that :)

by scadder21 on May 2, 2025 3:32 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, he's good

Hak Ju Lee

went 2-5, tripled

Hak has multiple hits in 6 of the past 7 games, 14 for 30 with a couple doubles, a few triples and, really cutting down on the Ks he had in a rough, early start in AA.

he is also an absolutely sensational defender and, athlete.

Just a matter of time...

…I still believe he gets to the bigs next season at some point. He is too good of a defender to keep down. The bat will be fine.
