Barnes vs Gilmartin

Curious on everyone's thoughts about these two college pitchers, what everyone thinks of their different attributes, and in all who will have the better career? Both drafted by solid teams and seem to have similar skill sets. Gilmartin sits in a very deep system of pitchers, but he is also more polished then the young guys. John loves both of them so its hard to tell if one will pan out above the other, or if we are talking about 6 in one hand and half dozen in the other. Everyone's thoughts and opinions welcomed!

me personally

I’ll take Barnes over Gilmartin easily. I will always take upside first. Admittedly, I’ve never seen either guy pitch, but based on the scouting reports I’ve read, Gilmartin is more of a mid-back end of the rotation guy, but he’s more likely to reach that potential. Barnes, on the other hand, can be a #2, and his floor is more than likely where Gilmartin will end up.

As for how they will fare for their respective teams, I think they were both ideal picks for their teams. Atlanta has plenty of upside arms. What they needed was more of a sure thing. Boston, on the other hand, really needed that upside pick. So, in that regard, I think both prospects fit their teams’ needs, and I think both have pretty good chances of becoming what their teams expect them to become.

How is Gilmartin's skillset anything close to Barnes's?

Barnes is a power pitcher with TOR stuff. Gilmartin looks like a #3 if EVERYTHING goes right.

i agree. however, people said the same thing about Mike Minor (the jury’s still out on that one). With the Braves, i’d give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt. if EVERYTHING goes right, Gillmartin is probably a #2. But EVERYTHING isn’t going to go “right”.

I've seen both live

They’re not really comparable. Barnes might be twice the prospect Gilmartin is. Gilmartin is a deep repertoire, command lefty #4-5 starter. Barnes throws hard with a good power FB/CB mix and a solid CU. He’s got mid to front end potential.

Gilmartin will reach the majors first but he’s a pretty unexciting option, typically working in the high 80’s. Barnes has a much more exciting ceiling and won’t take all that long himself.

I like Gilmartin more than that (mid rotation ceiling for me), but, yeah, clearly Barnes

Gilmartin is an athletic lefty with a tremendous changeup, command, and pitchability. Even with a mediocre FB/CB, that is a decent profile.
