2b prospects
I'm looking for a solid high upside 2b prospect to have as backup. I currently have Neil Walker so I'm set there. Most of the elite 2b prospects have been taken. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices. 1)Oscar Tejada-Bosox, 2) Charlie Culberson-SF and 3) Scooter Gennett-Mil. Both Tejada and Gennett are blocked by elite 2b, but Weeks could walk in FA and the BoSox could always trade Pedroia if it suits them. Tejada gets the most rave reviews with some saying they remind him of Soriano when he was coming up, but the numbers remain unimpressive. Gennett is described as being avg. at everything and a master of none. However, his hustle has allowed him to succeed at every level and he is the only real option at 2b for Mil if Weeks leaves. Culberson is intersting, he has some decent power but is a bit of a free swinger and is relatively close. His only competition is Keppinger right now so he has the most clear plath. What do you guys think of these players and which would you go with of the three Tejada, Gennett or Culberson? I'm currently owning Tejada but i'm leaning towards Culberson. Help me decide!!!!

Reese Havens
He has had health issues, but very nice upside bat, which is what you want for fantasy.
I’d be a bit worried that he could turn out to have chronic back issues of some kind, but I think the setbacks this year were mostly the kind of things you normally get in rehabbing after a major surgery. Some past issues, like TJ surgery, don’t seem likely to be problems going forward.
If it turns out the RTS surgery was enough to put the oblique/rib issues behind him, he might be an impact guy by next year.

Would definitely take him over those 3
I agree with your assessment of him. Still, the injuries are a major cause for concern.

Havens
Reese Havens is already owned in the league. It’s a deep league so I’m looking for a more high upside under the radar 2b prospect. As I said I have Neil Walker so I’m just looking for someone to develop in my minors until his contract gets too high. I’m torn between Culberson and Lombardozzi. Ideally i’d grab both but I only have roster space for one. Which would you choose of those two?

weeks isn’t a free agent for like 4 years, he signed a big extension
as far as secondary 2nd base prospects i like steve lombardozzi of the nats and sean coyle of the red sox

I know he’s already in the majors, but Giavotella is a favorite “sleeper” for me.
There’s a chance that Valdespin ends up at 2B next year if Reyes re-signs.
In the lower minors, I’m following Jonathan Schoop, Cory Spangenberg, and Rougned Odor.
I don’t have an opinion yet on Tejada, Culberson, and Gennett.

this is a good way to go...
A lot of decent prospects who start out as SS eventually get moved to 2B or 3B, so maybe key in on a few of them, especially in the lower minors. Schoop’s star is on the rise so he might be gone, as is Spangenberg, but unless you’re in a deeeep league, Odor is likely still around. Torreyes is also worth a look.

Can’t pick up spangenberg because he was just drafted and per league rules ins’t available until our league draft in March.
by PhillyPhanatic on Aug 24, 2025 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions
another draftee
Just in case you end up waiting until March to address your need, Javier Baez is another guy who’s a SS now but is likely to move to 2B or 3B. With Rendon, Spangenberg, Wong, Panik, and Baez, there’s a lot of guys in this draft who could potentially wind up as offensive 2B, so waiting for the draft might be the way to go if you don’t see upside available now.

Just saw him yesterday
Walked away impressed. Clocked between 3.7-4.1 seconds home to first (3.9 on a turn towards second for a double). Cranked a double to left-center gap (slightly opposite way), walked, stole a base.

Tejada
I’d pass on him, he’s falling out of favor quickly. Sean Coyle did great this year before his injury as a teenager and projects to move to 2B from SS. Also a chance that Xander Bogaerts moves to one side of SS or another, also a very high ceiling player, not a lot of plate patience but lots of power, figure him for Adrian Beltre-esque offensive lines.

Rendon
If he moves there, he is far-and-away the best 2b.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

Is this a rumor?
Sorry If I haven’t heard about this but, why would a guy with as many ankle problems as Rendon has had move to second -base? I’d move him to first-base before I’d move him there.
He’d win gold gloves at first as well as being an excellent hitter.

More value at 2B...plain and simple (IMO)
I imagine Rendon will be tried at 2B at some point, but yes, he can always move to 1B and do quite well.
by dbreer23 on Aug 24, 2025 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions
To answer your question...
IIRC, as soon as the Nats drafted him, there was speculation flying about that he might eventually be put at 2B b/c of Zimmerman, even if they started him in the minors at 3B. Don’t know if that was the case before he was drafted.
by dbreer23 on Aug 24, 2025 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions
They’re going to start him at 3B in the minors for now, and that’s all we know for sure. There’s been speculation about moving him to 2B ever since he was drafted because of Zimmerman. 1B is also a possibility, but he’d have a lot more positional value at 2B.
by rlwhite on Aug 24, 2025 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
He can handle 2B defensively
He moves extremely well and has good infield actions, I am convinced he could handle 2B if they decide to move him there (if Ackley and Kipnis can, Rendon definitely could). I would not do that though because his D at third has elite potential.

I agree that he could do it
I just don’t think they should do it - play him at second, that is. he has had two fairlky major ankle injuries and second is an extremely tough position to mplay physically. That really gets sold short on here when everybody talks about moving a guy there.
He is a very, very good third-baseman but more because he just has the skills and coordination for it than because he is a middle of the diamond type athlete, in my opinion. I’d put him at first-base myself and let them have an oustanding defender at 3b - 2b and 1b. Then, If Zimm gets too expensive they can move him back, like Sox did Youklis.

Joe Panik
If you’re looking for a better 2B prospect out of the Giants org then Joe Panik is your man. I know that he’s playing SS now, but he’s likely to end up at 2B. Even the Giants head of minor league development referred to him as a “middle infielder” in a recent interview. Culberson’s shaky D, high K-rate, and low BB-rate make him something of a longshot to play in the majors for more than a season or 2.
Looking at other orgs, I think that the Rockies’ Kolten Wong is a strong choice. He should be a very fast mover and should put up a great BA with lots of doubles in the spacious confines of Coors Stadium. The Pads’ Spangenburg has started out hot, but I think there’s a very big possibility that he ends up in the OF.

Tyler Anderson was Colorado's first round pick
Kolten Wong went to St. Louis. I’m sure your endorsement still stands but there won’t be a Coors Field factor here.

You're right
My bad. The other beer stadium isn’t almost as good a hitter’s park as Coors is, so I’ll stick with my recommendation.

Im not allowed to pick up players that were drafted in the 2011 draft they aren’t available in our league until our league draft in March.

if he is, he's way at the back end of that range
that would make him a borderline top 500 type prospect overall.

I was coming here to say this too.
Dude just had a three-double night yesterday, actually against a right-hander for once. He’ll always mash lefties, and with Aaron Hill, Tony Abreu, Mark Hallberg, and Daniel Kaczrowski - who? exactly - ahead of him in the organization, it looks like he’s got a very clear path to the majors if the bat carries up through the system. Good breakout guy after a merely-average 2010 in the MWL.

Players blocking David Nick
you are correct in saying that there isn’t much talent blocking him. However, there is a distinct possibility that Chris Owings gets moved from SS to 2b because of Stephen Drew. So there is a potential issue there.

Thanks for adll the advice
But most of you listed players that are already owned i.e . havens…. Also were not allowed to pick up players that were just drafted…. we have to wait until our league draft. So the three i listed were the best options out there… I was thinking lombardozzi too, to whomever recommended that. Thanks guys!
by PhillyPhanatic on Aug 24, 2025 2:20 PM EDT reply actions
Stand pat...
Given the restrictions on player pickups, and the fact that there are very few 2B prospects in the past couple of years (and the good ones have already been promoted - Ackley, Kipnis), you might be best to hang onto Tejada and see what you can get in the offseason via trade or your draft, where you could get guys like Spangenberg, Wong, etc.
by dbreer23 on Aug 24, 2025 4:00 PM EDT reply actions
Sean Coyle
Why not him? I’d say his upside is much higher than that of either of the three you mentioned—great numbers in low A for a HS player in his first pro season.

More of a thought process then a specific play
Often its best to invest in MiLB Shortstops then 2B. For some reason you see more top hitting prospects start at SS and move . Its often easier to grab a couple guys like Franklin and Schoop and hope for the best (or worst) that they wind up at second.
And as guys go, Schoop is my pick if hes out there. I think next preseason he will be on all the lists, there is no one in the system blocking him at 2b.

those guys are garbage
you’d be better off picking up somebody else (matt adams) that’s relatively under the radar (matt adams) and dealing them (matt adams) for a legit 2b prospect. culberson’s the best of the bunch, but that’s a pretty atrocious bunch.

Matt Adams is already owned in our league. We have some very smart owners. Thanks for the suggestion, would have loved to have him. But unfortunately we have a die hard cards fan in our league.

He's a pretty good hitter without using his legs.
When he does use them he shows solid gap power, which is the next best thing to HR power.
2-3 years away, but I think he’ll be a pretty good player.

Please help me choose, I have to choose by tomorrow at midnight!!!
The reason why the players I’ve listed are as some say “garbage” the are the top sleepers that are left and I chose most of them because they are close and relatively un-blocked in their path to the majors. Lombardozzi is already getting called up in sept. and it’s widely known that the Nats want to move espinosa to SS and trade desmond. Culberson is doing pretty well and has more power than Lombardozzi and there is no one blocking him in SF. Gennett gets a lot of hype but is really blocked by weeks but he could always be traded but that’s highly unlikely, so he’s out of the question. I really like the suggestion of Coyle so I may go that route. keep in mind that these are just back up 2b players that im looking to develop, I already have Neil Walker at 2b for years, these are just to cover me.
So who would you all choose?? Lombardozzi, Culberson or Coyle?
by PhillyPhanatic on Aug 27, 2025 3:59 PM EDT reply actions
Final say
Lombardozzi’s probably got the best situation to succeed. Thats probably the safest bet while Culberson’s probably got the highest potential
Whats the frequency, Kenneth?
by ZimforPrez on Aug 28, 2025 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Steve Lombardozzi II
Even in deep leagues, I’d side with the cat who is the closest to MLB & Lombardozzi fits the bill. I don’t think any of the trio you’ve mentioned has upside beyond any of the others so he would be my choice.
