July 21 - National Joe Mauer Advertising Day (also, MiLB games were played)

Congratulations!  You have found this daily thread in the narrow strip of blog content sandwiched within Joe Mauer  Advertisement Rollout Day.  Please claim your reward by commenting on any minor league performances you deem worthy of note.  I'll check back in after I've washed my hair and bought some sporting apparel.

Star-divide

OK,  I feel much better now.  Thanks Joe!

The surprising Jose Altuve callup has me wondering what the community's predictions are on callup dates for the following prospects:

Brett Lawrie: July 27 is my prediction

Jason Kipnis: August 15

Julio Teheran: July 28

Jesus Montero: September ??

Devin Mesoraco: Also September

Matt Moore: Predict he will NOT be called up (and that they would rather shut him down than switch him to the pen to limit innings)

If/when Hernandez is dealt, but yeah, I think that makes sense

Likely destinations for Hernandez? Would SF think about it, or do they stick with the Whiteside/Stewart/Sanchez in-house options?

He'd be a great fit there

Nice defender with a good arm, good situational hitter and very even-keeled, professional approach. I wasn’t wild about acquiring him from BAL to be honest, but he has really, really grown on me. Good player and a good leader/teammate. I don’t imagine there are many catchers available who are as qualified to handle that pitching staff. I don’t think it would take much to get him as he’s an FA after the season.

Thanks

I missed an obvious pun for X being “head & shoulders” a better player than Y, but I’ve been in a bit of a slump since that SI cover story.

NW Arkansas? Or Texas ASG report?

The latter I’m still up for posting, although I think I’ve managed to divulge a lot of what I saw through various comments. Not sure how much more I can add; Mike Trout is in the majors and you can see him yourself, Grant Green is no longer a shortstop, etc.

A notable exception would be Wil Myers, who I haven’t talked a whole lot about. That is because I’ve also seen Myers in several other games recently, have been reviewing the considerable amount of video footage I’ve got on him, and am writing a detailed scouting report on him.

He's worth a look

I did a 9-way “Young OF Smackdown” of 1st and 2nd yr pros last year. When all was said and done, he ended up just behind Arcia and ahead of guys like Marisnick and Marte. That gives me a lot more confidence that this breakout is legit - supported by an a priori hypothesis, basically.

I wouldn’t drop Lawrie for him just yet, but I do believe he’s legit and that he’ll be a high riser during this offseason, much the way people gradually realized Segura ought to be recognized last offseason.

I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls.

by siddfynch on Jul 21, 2025 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't

(Except for my day job, where I write a shit-ton).

I do a bunch of preseason analysis for my league, but it’s all spreadsheets that I don’t share ‘cuz my league mates are all over this site. Of course, they’re so savvy that it likely wouldn’t make a difference anyway.

The evolution of prospecting has really evened the playing field lately; My big draft scores (3 round drafts) in the past few years appear to be limited to just Matt Moore and Oscar Taveras after their first pro years. That’s pretty competitive. And I’d have chosen Arcia over Taveras last year if I weren’t a Cards fan and decided to finally celebrate their first under-the-radar legit prospect in recent memory.

by siddfynch on Jul 21, 2025 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Young OF smackdown from this past Oct

Looking back, I guess I had 1st through 3rd-yr players in there. FWIW, here were how the ranks shook out - mostly based on scouting, stats, ARL, and pedigree. I also weighted hit and speed tools a little higher than fielding and arm tools, but did factor defensive spectrum into it (which helped in Lipka’s case).

They separated into 4 tiers:

Arcia
Taveras

Lipka
Puello
Marisnick

Yorman
Liriano

A Garcia
Ryde Rodriguez

For the heck of it, I went back and re-seeded Marte (4th-year player) into it; he slotted into top of 2nd tier. Hicks was ineligible, but I put him in anyway just to see where a pedigreed blue-chipper would fit - and he easily fit above Arcia.

In hindsight, Arcia, Taveras and maybe Marte were the best calls, and Puello was maybe the best call for not yet jumping on the bandwagon.

I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls.

by siddfynch on Jul 21, 2025 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

Would you still put Taveras ahead of Marisnick? Both have had outstanding years, but Marisnick has stayed healthy all year.

by guru4u on Jul 22, 2025 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Good question

I don’t know, have only been follow Taveras. I know Marisnick is also doing well, but I usually save the analyses until the offseason.

Taveras’ stretch of nagging injuries does worry me a little. He needs that development time.

You aren’t concerned at all with the low BB rates? His K rate isn’t horrible (right around 20%) and he is young but 5% BB rates are pretty low. I’ve read reports he has an advanced approach so maybe he is just swinging at everything because he is seeing the ball well right now…of course, most of the time when I make that assumption it turns out they are just really aggressive and rarely learn to take BBs.

by jfish26101 on Jul 22, 2025 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure I'm concerned

But they’ve all got a yellow flag somewhere at this point. In his case, the optimistic viewpoint is that he’s got a few hundred more ABs to get it figured out. He’s only 19, and not egregiously hacktastic, so the flag isn’t red for me yet.

I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls. I will not feed trolls.

by siddfynch on Jul 22, 2025 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

BB/K

If you are going by AB’s he has a 8% walk rate and 18% k rate, which don’t seem bad at all considering he turned 19 recently. Also if you look a bit at his stats you will see about half of his k’s (13) came in a 40ab period when he just came back from a month lay off due to an injury. So really besides that small blip (given overall still SSS) he has been hitting everything and would have a 12% k rate if you took out just those 40ab.

by hybrid on Jul 22, 2025 3:59 AM EDT up reply actions

by jfish26101 on Jul 22, 2025 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

but I thought I made it obvious as to why, he was out for over a month with out playing … seems pretty logical that he would be rust and when half of his k’s came that there is something to it.

by hybrid on Jul 22, 2025 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going off memory, I looked him up on Fangraphs not that long ago. Forgive me if I was off 1% one way or the other.

Taveras came up in Callis chat today and he cautioned anyone buying him too soon and basically said he is a 4th OF until he can duplicate his numbers at AA or higher.

At least before September. Vizcaino has already moved to the AA bullpen to limit his innings and his stuff could be good enough to be an asset out of the bullpen right now. Teheran on the other hand will likely start in Gwinnett until the end of their season in order to keep building up his innings and get him ready for a full season as a starter next year.

I was making a comment about invoking Keith Law’s opinion. Keith Law does work for ESPN.

I guess I was the only one watching the Futures Game on ESPN and listening them talk about Middlebrooks as Scott Rolen 2.0 while he was busy Ryan Brauning a routine grounder.

by mrkupe on Jul 21, 2025 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah and Scott Rolen never botched a grounder

I actually agree with you that he’s getting overrated (his approach needs some serious work), but if your basing it on that one misplay that’s clearly flawed.

Brandon Jacobs of Lowell > Brandon Jacobs of NYG

by Lesterfan on Jul 21, 2025 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't using that as an example of reality vs. opinion about his defense

I was just using it as an example of ESPN never missing an opportunity to talk up Boston players. It’s the style of coverage that they want and they are clearly entitled to that (and they seem to make money, so who am I to say they’re wrong?).

by mrkupe on Jul 21, 2025 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Scott Rolen

would have made that play.

by blackoutyears on Jul 21, 2025 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

what??

which players did they NOT talk up in the Futures Game? They went out of their way to speak highly of ~90% of the players.

one error in that game says absolutely nothing about the type of defender he is. you sound like the guy who claimed he was downgrading Altuve after his 2 hits in the futures game weren’t line drives, so who knows how many of his hits are like those??

by jwa1417 on Jul 22, 2025 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he is disputing that 1 error means very little.

I’m a little surprised to see people so upset at the thought that ESPN plays to the largest markets to increase their ratings. Gammons is about the biggest Red Sox homer I’ve heard, he may as well be broadcasting the Red Sox games. I’m not sure Law is the best example of media bias but there are definitely examples of networks doing their best to appeal to the largest markets.

by jfish26101 on Jul 22, 2025 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

yup

The second largest market in North America behind New York is Los Angeles.

Of course ESPN ‘plays’ to the largest markets, but that has nothing to do with the promotion of players in the Red Sox or Yankees farm system. Any time one of their prospects falters, however minor it might be, people love to jump to “well, thats just espn/keith law/anyone pumping up that organization. they’re overrated” stance.

by jwa1417 on Jul 22, 2025 4:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Law is fairly objective. To be honest, he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy that gives two shits about what his readers think as long as he is employed and he does a good enough job for ESPN to keep him employed. He may have certain profiles he likes more than others (all analysts do and certain teams go after certain profiles so that is part of the issue right there) but I don’t think he has any particular bias towards a team.

That said, there are some who do. I’ve heard the argument made that Callis has a Boston bias and I get that vibe a little. Again, he likes tools and Boston goes after tools but he has been doing the Boston system rankings for at least 11 years and does seem to talk about them an awful lot. Gammons is a no brainer. I don’t think it is as big of an issue (meaning I don’t really care even if there is a bias) as I used to when I first started paying attention to prospects but I very much think they like to appeal to the largest markets.

When I say markets, I mean baseball markets. ESPN talks up the Lakers in basketball because basketball is what is important. They talk up the Cowboys and Steelers because those are the teams with the biggest followings. In baseball, it is the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Cubs, etc. It is just the way it works. ESPN is in the business of getting high ratings, selling magazines, and making money.

by jfish26101 on Jul 22, 2025 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Law is objective about players, but he does have his beefs with certain organizations.

My favorite one being a strong case in point as he’ll praise Rockies prospects while at the same time tearing down the organization they play in. Whether it’s simply philosophical differences taken to an extreme and played up for good copy, or something more personal is sometimes hard to tell. I don’t think it’s a east-coast/west-coast thing, in the Rockies case, I actually suspect that it might be an anti-religious projection on a team closely associated with Jesus-freaks.

by Rox Girl on Jul 22, 2025 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

hahaha what???

i don’t think Keith law takes religious beliefs into consideration when evaluating players

by jwa1417 on Jul 22, 2025 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said he did, my subject line says that he's objective about players.

I think he does have issues with certain teams, and he’s absolutely written in the past that he believes the Rockies misguided in their approach of targeting character guys (to put his opinion on this lightly) and it’s just a suspicion given his pretty outspoken atheism (I’m an atheist too, by the way) that the religion thing still bugs him. I do know that he hates Jim Tracy, he makes this clear at least once a week on Twitter, sometimes a few times. I know that he had to include a question about Tyler Matzek getting ruined by the Rockies organization every single week in his chats for most of this season. Again, I think he makes fair evaluations of talent, but I think he has clear organizational bias when it comes to front offices he likes and tends to give more rope to a few for prospect failures, while quickly jumping on others.

by Rox Girl on Jul 22, 2025 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

mmm

you may be right but is he wrong to dislike Tracy? he’s a terrible in-game manager. and it’s not his fault he probably gets hundreds of questions about Matzek and why he has fallen off this year so badly…he’s gotta answer them. i don’t think he has any incentive to bash or boost an organization though, it’s not like he has no leg to stand on with the Tracy/Matzek issues.

by jwa1417 on Jul 23, 2025 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He has a leg to stand on, but also an axe to grind.

There are other terrible managers (Fredi Gonzalez?) in the bigs that don’t quite get this ink from him. Other organizations that have mismanaged top prospects that don’t get brought up every single week.

And I absolutely believe he has incentive to bash some organizations, to consistently bash a manager like Tracy as that seems to be a large part of his appeal to his audience. If it drives the traffic to the website, he’s doing his job, so I don’t really blame him, I just think it’s silly to think that he carries no organizational biases when he pretty clearly displays them week in, week out. Again though, I think he does fine separating that from evaluating individual prospects.

by Rox Girl on Jul 23, 2025 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Anything of substance on Colorado 'ruining' Tyler Matzek?

not sensitive, annoyed

Right, your comment was implying that ESPN (and Keith Law, in particular) undeservedly promotes specific players from Boston.

Coincidentally, you’re also the only one who must have missed every report (Goldstein, Callis, SICKELS, etc) on Middlebrooks’ plus glove. ZOMG EAST COAST BIAS EVERYWHERE!!!

by blackoutyears on Jul 22, 2025 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

accept what?

the fact that people sound like idiots when they make broad statements like that? i’m not denying the fact that teams like boston and new york get more attention from espn, did you even read what the original comment was?

‘well, I guess some dude from Boston had to get the “ESPN Bump”’

if you don’t understand the ignorance and stupidity of that comment, i don’t know what to tell you.

by jwa1417 on Jul 22, 2025 4:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm confused as to what your argument is

You just said yourself that those teams get more attention from ESPN. In an earlier post, you stated that “Of course ESPN ‘plays’ to the largest markets, but that has nothing to do with the promotion of players in the Red Sox or Yankees farm system.” My recognizance of the truth of the first point is actually what you’ve gone ape about, and your second point is diametrically opposed to the first point.

I actually think Keith Law is quite fair; he certainly has his pronounced biases, but organizational loyalty does not appear to be one of them.

Now, if your reason for raising such a stink is predicated on your belief that I am ignorant and stupid, then you’re actually trolling. Feel free to tell me that you think I’m wrong in this case, feel free to explain to me (in civil terms) how you think that I’m wrong, but you are going to get nowhere fast by calling me out over nothing at all - especially when you actually seem to agree with my point.

by jfish26101 on Jul 22, 2025 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it is safe to say

That all of the prospect analysts (KLaw, KG, Callis, Manuel, etc) are pretty well free from organizational bias. They have other biases (e.g. KG being a velo whore), but saying KLaw talked up Middlebrooks because he plays in the Boston organization is quite ludicrous.

by mrkupe on Jul 22, 2025 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

what?

my argument is that you sound like a fool when you say something like “well i guess some dude from Boston had to get the ‘espn bump’” when people from non-espn outlets are just as high on middlebrooks now.

i don’t understand why this has to be brought up EVERY time a red sox/yankees prospect is discussed on here. that was my original statement, not anything about espn wanting to make money and appealing to their largest audiences blah blah blah. people are so quick to dismiss these players as overrated now simply because you assume espn is just boosting their profile because of the organization they’re in.

by jwa1417 on Jul 22, 2025 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

i don’t understand why this has to be brought up EVERY time a red sox/yankees prospect is discussed on here

As someone who frequents this forum on a daily basis, that quite clearly isn’t the case. You’re going way overboard.

by blackoutyears on Jul 22, 2025 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

okay

but what other organization is blamed for this? why isn’t ESPN giving C-Mart the “ESPN bump” this year for St. Louis? why didn’t they give Tampa Bay the ESPN bump for Moore? Every time someone thinks a Red Sox/Yankees prospect is overrated, out comes this ridiculous argument that ESPN has created some false hope for the players

by jwa1417 on Jul 23, 2025 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

You're missing the point

It’s demonstrably false that there’s some sort of ESPN bias charge “every time” a Red Sox or Yankee prospect is brought up here (overrated, underrated or just rated), or even much of the time.

I don't think

predicting 12-15 HR power for Marte is being a homer. He could hit 20 per year in his prime. He’s already fairly strong and there’s a lot of room for muscle still on his frame. The bigger question is whether he will ever be selective enough. His poor patience is not only going to limit his walks, but also limit the number of hittable pitches he sees, which will in turn suppress both the BA and the power.

I think its reasonable to say he could put up a few 315/360/520 years with maybe 30 HR and 15 SB

Like mentioned, he lacks the ability to take a walk, but as I said yesterday, he is very good at selecting HIS pitch which is why he drives so many balls.. Maybe a bit too pull-happy as well. We will see how that translates as he approaches Mickey Hatcher and his Oppo or bust teaching style. I’d say he has the most potential of any hitter in the Angels MiLB system, right with Cowart

What are your thoughts on

the PCL vs. IL regarding that thesis?

by blackoutyears on Jul 21, 2025 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

pretty much neutral

The PCL has a lot of variation within it should be noted . . .sending a guy to, say, Iowa or Memphis isn’t going to put him in the same kind of environment as pitching out in Tucson, Salt Lake City, or Colorado Springs. So you do have to make that distinction, I suppose.

Environmental factors should play a small-to-non-existent factor in deciding whether to promote a player to a certain level, IMO. It seems pretty intuitive to me, honestly . . .you’re training these guys to pitch against the batter, not the park. Sometimes a promotion to a batter-friendly environment can prove to be a valuable training tool from this perspective. So I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the IL and PCL in this respect . . .but I am generally an advocate of not trying to shelter or coddle a young pitcher. Not like it gets easier for them at the highest level.

Turns out the only pitcher that made an impression on her was “Hamburger” (name recognition) who had a far superior game to Perez.

No scouting report from her on Perez!
Someday I’ll remind her that she saw the All Star Martin Perez pitch in AAA.

Yeah,

he’s a 1B without spectacular power numbers in a system with quite an array of 1B prospects (Allen, Goldy, Borchering, Davidson). Not sure where he’d rank in that group, but probably no better than third.

by blackoutyears on Jul 22, 2025 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

does anyone have scouting reports on his defense

at 3B? he’s played there almost exclusively this year, and while BA doesn’t seem to think he can be a 3B long term, i’m wondering if anyone else has a scouting report on him, or impressions of his defense

almost 900 OPS in the Southern League, and having just turned 23 makes him slightly below league average age i think. if he can actually stick at 3B, would that make him a legit prospect?

by blue bulldog on Jul 23, 2025 8:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Would be interested in some current takes too

I know that former reports weren’t exactly glowing (at least largely) & would think that him sticking at 3b in AA is largely due to the presence of ‘the man, the myth, the Goldschmidt’ at 1b on the same roster & probably the fact that there are a couple CI prospects on his heels in the CAL too that a lot of folks think are headed for 1b in all likelihood.

I think I said recently in one of these threads that he’s probably an extra bat but he might be very good in that capacity. You’re right; if he sticks at 3b & continues to hit while climbing the ladder, he’s pretty legitimate.

by Matt0330 on Jul 24, 2025 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Probably fifth

Or fourth if Brandon Allen is considered a major leaguer in earnest. I really like Matt Davidson’s stick at either 1b/3b & Bobby Borchering does have ample power & is showing improvement over the long haul.

I like Ryan Wheeler but there is something of a logjam of similar ‘bat first’ guys in the system & he almost certainly has the least power potential.

by realitypolice on Jul 22, 2025 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Agnostic on Law

But that’s not the point at all, unless he’s somehow had a role in the absolute butcher job the Rockies have done in screwing with Iannetta, Stewart, Nelson, etc over the last few years.

by realitypolice on Jul 22, 2025 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Had he played another position, I think Iannetta's the only one of those that there's a half decent argument for,

but as a catcher, I have no problem with the team getting capable alternates as I don’t want him ending up overused and going down the Russell Martin route where another team gets the rebound after a wash-out. Still having this kind of season from him a few years after his debut is kind of nice. The Rockies went the Jason Varitek route of slowly crafting him and so far it’s working out alright.

Every nationally recognized scouting publication outside of K-Law saw Nelson more as a future solid utility guy rather than a starter after a season and a half in the minors, how is the fact that he’s becoming exactly that a failure by the Rockies? Not every prospect is going to reach their ceiling, most don’t, that he hasn’t hit his floor is a good thing.

Same goes for Stewart, who quickly got the label of being an uncoachable primadonna outside the organization, but seems to be doing well enough in it to be given a fourth shot at proving he’s better than AAAA. Yeah he had/has talent, but he also has a pretty slow swing, and it’s getting exposed. The Rockies can only do so much to coax him to fix it. I think he’s the better change of scenery candidate than Nelson, but if the Rockies do keep him, who knows it could turn out to be a Chris Young in Arizona type of situation. Nobody seems to be labeling them a disaster in player development.

by Rox Girl on Jul 22, 2025 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Dan O’Dowd has spent the last 12 months putting every piss-poor defensively-challenged over-the-hill hack he can get his hands on in the way of his young infielders. Even if they didn’t pan out, playing Stewart and Nelson every day this year would still be a better use of time and money than the parade of crap the Rockies have been leading into their organization.

I didn’t know or care that KLaw had been a big Nelson guy.

by realitypolice on Jul 22, 2025 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The Rockies would have loved to play Nelson or especially Stewart in the MLB everyday, honestly they would.

O’Dowd’s invested a ton of bonus money and development time into them and if they gave the team a better chance of winning, he would. Just like I’m sure the Padres would love to play Anthony Rizzo or Kyle Blanks everyday this season rather than having to use Brad Hawpe and Ryan Ludwick.

And I guess if Rockies attendance figures were more like San Diego’s it would have been a bit easier to carry Stewart’s .143/.235/.209 line and wait for him to get fixed while the team tanked, or Nelson’s .250 OBP and questionable defense, but besides trying to develop these players for other richer teams to use when they get good, the Rockies were attempting to win this season as well. Frankly, that both Nelson and Stewart were demonstrably worse than “the parade of crap” at 25 and 26, respectively should be taken as a sign that maybe expectations are a bit high for them.

by Rox Girl on Jul 22, 2025 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'll disagree with the consensus here, having watched him in a majority of his MLB games thus far

and a good number in the minors, Nelson’s closer to AAAA right now than he is to a change of scenery type. That could change, there’s still room for a little development, but he’s really stagnated the last two years at a bench/AAA level rather than a MLB starting one.

by Rox Girl on Jul 22, 2025 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah but he was too talented and still is young enough to become a regular MLB'er

maybe an interesting argument would be: how do guys go from a AAAA player to a MLB starter without switching teams? All the ones I can think of had to switch teams… Carlos Pena, Ben Zobrist, etc

Yeah Law just said yesterday he thought Cosart had #1 stuff but pretty big concerns over his delivery and health (which could put him out of baseball). To assume he reaches his ceiling therefore deeming him untouchable would be a huge organizational mistake. I would sell high on guys like that; I would get burned occasionally but I think it would turn out to be the correct decision more often than not (watch Cosart hit his ceiling now haha).

he's gotta be better

Than trotting out cook, why waste his bullets??

For 2011, it's a matter of dollars, playing out the end of Cook's contract and hoping to trade him.

Cook’s not going to be going anywhere at the normal deadline in July, but given that his contract should easily clear waivers (if it doesn’t, he’ll just be let go to the claiming team) and that he’ll be a FA after the season, he should be a prime candidate for a waiver trade in August. So long as he can rebound a bit over his next few starts, the Rockies might be able to get something of value for him then.

Balcom-Miller: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 5K, 0 BB, 0 R. Not the sexiest prospect, but outstanding ground ball rate and sneaky stuff. I think he’s going to be good.

That was one hell of a steal of a trade… The Rockies got 8.1 innings of crappy Manny Delcarmen performance for him.

Julio Rodriguez: 7 IP, 3 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 1 ER/R.
