MOD: Yankees #3
Alright, so not much discussion in last MOD. Right now, rankings for pick 51:
Top three: Chafin, Boyd, Osich. This goes against the past three years, where the Yanks have focused on prep position players (SS and CF). But I think it is acceptable with a deep pitching class. Are there any signability picks people see falling to 51? They are one of the few teams who can pop for a big contract, although they tend to wait to do so until after round two or three.
Discussion for pick #88: The ten who I think will be available, and are the highest ranking on my list are:
Tyler Greene
Rookie Davis
Billy Flamion
Larry Greene
Jake Cave
Adam Conley
Kes Carter
Austin Wood
Christian Lopes
Cody Asche
How does this look? Any suggested add-ons? People you think will be gone? I think here we can focus on a prep position player. Obviously, on mock draft day if anyone drops that is unexpected, I may pick them instead.

Sorry, had internet issues while MOD 2 was up
I like your targets for round 2. As for the round 3 targets, I think Austin Wood should be higher on that list. Just a gut feeling on him.

Wood
Love the size and velocity. But have seen him projected as a reliever due to lack of secondary offerings. That’s why I have him so low for the round two pick. Although if he were there in round three, I wouldn’t hesitate.

and for clarification
pick 51 is supplemental round, pick 88 is second. thanks for your input, sorry you missed the last mod. how would rank these options?

Yeah sorry
Forgot how big the supplemental round is this year.

According to Frankie Piliere
Yanks have been linked to Tyler Goeddel, Jake Cave, Brandon Martin, and Dillon Howard. Can’t see Howard falling to 51, but if he did, I can’t imagine not picking him. I had Cave on the list for pick 88. I projected Goeddel going before this pick - if he doesn’t, where does he rank compared to this list? And I had Martin going later than 88. If he drops to pick 118, he would be considered - we can discuss pick 118 in next MOD.

Yeah I would take Howard if he is there at 51...
unless an even bigger signability guy falls. I would rank your list:
Tyler Greene
Rookie Davis
Jake Cave
Larry Greene
Billy Flamion
Austin Wood
Adam Conley
Christian Lopes
Kes Carter
Cody Asche
Goeddel would easily rank 1 on this list for me.

same top five
I’ll take that as a good sign.

Only difference is Flamion and Cave switched
I must admit I love Flamion’s swing - but Cave has some sick potential as a power lefty starting pitcher.

Yeah
That is why I switched them…not too many arms like this come along often. I also think now Larry Greene would be a little lower on this list for me after some stuff I read about him today…mainly contact concerns

John had the Yanks taking
Williams Jerez, OF, Brooklyn HS in his mock

Seems a stretch at 51 to me
Definitely open to him at 88 though. Question - Goeddel or Jerez?
by cookiedabookie on May 30, 2025 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I can see that at 51
Though with Culver last year the Yankees aren’t shy about popping local kids earlier than usual. I don’t know a ton about Jerez, but him vs. Goeddel is a good question…due to my limited knowledge about Jerez I would likely lean Goeddel. But if you have any more info on Jerez pass it along so I can make a more informed decision

Jerez
Has a nice swing from the left side, from video I have seen, and good speed. However, he does not look like a power hitting prospect - he has room to add bulk and power, but will probably sacrifice speed and defense in doing so. From reports, he sounds quite raw, and a long-term project. He has strong connections to Yankees, and after the Culver pick last year, it would not surprise me to see Opp pick him. However, he is already 19 - older than most high schoolers.
I personally do not like him at 51, I think that is too high. I think Goeddel is higher for me right now. If Jerez was available at 88, I still think I would have him behind the top five above - maybe above Greene if negative reports are coming out. Add on the fact that last year we drafted Williams, already in CF, and Gumbs, who probably will move there, it doesn’t make sense.
I will say that I would draft him in the third if he was still there, no question - not sure if he will be though. Do we try to do exactly what the Yankees would do, or draft who we think are the best picks. The reason I wanted to do this is because last year’s draft was so frustrating to me, especially after a pretty good 2009 draft. Real world, I could see them drafting Jerez at 51, Cave at 88, and Martin at 118 - not what I would do. So I would like to offer an alternative strategy, what I would like to see given their resources.

If you are trying to mock exactly like the Yankees...
then I can see that order above. However, if you want to offer an alternative strategy, go for it. I never truly know how the Yankees will draft…it seems like almost every year they surprise me.
