I need to whine
Need to whine about something....all week I've been having constant trouble with baseball websites..BA, BR, Fangraphs, BP, everything. They all seem to load very slowly, if they load at all. It's happening on both of my computers. Virus scans are negative, I've rebooted, everything is updated, etc. so I don't think there is something wrong with my systems. It was also happening to Facebook a few days ago although that seems better now. SB Nation websites and most other non-baseball things seem unaffected, although Youtube and other Google things are balky.
Has anyone else noticed this? The worst for me seem to be BR and fangraphs, which is extremely annoying when I'm trying to write.

interesting
I knew they were having some tech problems a few days ago but the tech team stamped it out. Let me know if things stay slow and I will mention it to them.
I wonder if there is some sort of general internet attack going on right now…Skynet or something.
I’m very frustrated, it is cutting into my productivity pretty bad the last couple of days.

Recently, the tubes have been uncharacteristically slow for me as well
I’m in the Skynet line.

what type of connection do you have John?
are your 2 computers connected both to a router and the router to a modem?
in my DSL by going to http://192.168.0.1/ which is the address of your dsl modem or something like that, I can see the downstream speed. last week youtube and other online videos were balky and when I checked the downstream speed was lower than supposed. after seeing that, I closed the modem (with the on/off switch) and restarted it after a minute and all was ok afterwards.

stuff
I’ve shut the modem and router off a few times with no apparent effect.
My entire ISP was down for awhile yesterday, so I’m wondering if there is something going on with the local internet architecture.

Do you use firefox?
Firefox has absolutely sucked recently for me. Every update makes it worse.

I use Google Chrome
and I haven’t really had any issues with any of those sites. I seem to have less problems with it than any other browser I’ve used in the past.

Should I make the switch? Does it have any nice features?

They're essentially equal...
If you’re used to Firefox, just stick with it. There’s no practical difference.

I was under the impression that Chrome about 33% faster at loading sites
Check this link for a nice comparison between Chrome, Firefox, and IE 9.

I'm sure there are tons of features out there that I don't use
I’ve been using Chrome for quite awhile now, probably close to two years(started when they first released it). I had many problems with Firefox and Explorer freezing up or not responding, I rarely have those issues with Chrome. I haven’t used anything else since I switched so I’m not sure how it would compare to the others now.

I recently switched to Chrome because Firefox just takes so much longer to load. Firefox also experiences worse slowdown when you have a lot of tabs open. Chrome isn’t perfect by any means, but it’s appreciably faster.

computers
I stink with computers and software, and basically just stick with whatever IE is most current.

I'm not a real stickler for this kind of stuff, but I would DEFINITELY recommend having
Firefox or Chrome as your main browser. Or at least have one of them available, so when something like this comes up, you can switch from IE to Firefox and check if the browser is the problem.

Make the switch John
I also stink with computers but Dewey Finn did me a solid and downloaded Firefox for me. I was shocked at how much faster everything worked.

Make the switch. You’ll be glad you did.
Its kind of like getting a new computer.

I had the same issue up till today and I couldn’t figure out why. Firefox was slow and even my xbox live connection was dragging. I decided to look into it today and noticed that my static IP settings have been reset. I fixed it and everything is actually running faster than ever.

Try This
This is the best site to try. Its a little technical but the site breaks things down really nicely for newbs. I didn’t know anything a couple of years ago until i started on this site. Give it a try if you get frustrated enough.

I had a similar issue with this site recently too.
It would look like it was loading, but it would just stall out on a blank screen.
• In order to rule out some things, John, when this was happening, could you load other sites like, say, Google? Yahoo? etc?
• What kind of computer do you have? Mac or PC?
• Have you recently updated or installed software?

it varies wildly…..SB Nation has been a little slow on and off. BP, BA, BR, youtube, google will load VERY slowly, or sometimes not at all, just a blank screen. Other times they work fine. It is unpredictable and very frustrating.
PC.
Updates: i am ignorant so I just let windows and IE update whatever they want to update.

BA
Has been extremely slow for me, thought it was just my secured network at work, but now I feel better that it must be something with the website. Because i’ve never encountered BA being slow before at work.
And yes, lets just say i’m on BA A LOT at work, as well as minor league ball of course :)

Still having issues with this site, and particularly with accessing fan posts. Browser keeps getting hung up trying to load ads from in.getclicky.com

What browser are you using? I will pass this on to the tech guys
by John Sickels on Sep 30, 2025 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah most of the sites
have been running slowly, but SB nation is doing ok. I have had my pc crash/freeze up twice past month, but all my virus/spyware stuff “checks out”. I am planning to refract my computer to see if that works.
firefox has been slower in general, because most likely more people are using it instead of IE.
