Nationals Sign Cuban Yuniesky Maya
Big news on the international front today with the Washington Nationals signing Cuban right-hander Yuniesky Maya. Federal Baseball has a good rundown here.
People are already asking me what I think about him. I don't know anything that isn't already public knowledge. He sounds like he should be a decent pitcher, but the track record of Cubans is so erratic that I won't go beyond that until we actually get some pro data. He's already 28 so he is likely a finished product. Scouting reports indicate average velocity with the fastball, but a good assortment of breaking stuff and sharp control.

Truly a bolt from the blue for Nats fans.
A puzzling El Duque minor league contract. Nothing of real substance so far on the academy side. “Painful” comments about dealing with Rizzo for the trade deadline while wondering whether the man is deluding himself about how far his starting rotation is from contention.
This could be a real watershed event for the Nats and if nothing else shows that they are ready to put some coin into international talent when given the opportunity. Having Livan pitch so well this year has probably helped, and I’ve got to imagine that tie goes to Livo next year should he desire to come back at an affordable price in a 5th starter’s role.

After Betancourt, anybody from Cuba named Yuniesky I automatically hate.
Fans are typically idiots.

Ha!
+1 for you sir.
I pity you if you are currently a Royals fan. That is one bad baseball player.
