Discussion: Favorite Non-Baseball Sport

Apparently this person is famous. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images for Estabrook Group)

We'll get back to minor league stuff this evening, but for the daytime I have a discussion question for you.

The World Cup soccer deal and the whole LeBron James thing reminded me that I really don't care about any sport other than baseball. I used to follow the NFL, college football, and college basketball fairly closely. But when our first child was born, I no longer had time to follow the other sports at all, not and keep up on my baseball stuff. I still have a mild awareness of what is going in college basketball, but otherwise I have no active non-baseball sports knowledge at all.

My experience is not typical for most people, but I am curious about how many of you are interested in other sports besides baseball. By "baseball" I'm including minor league ball (obviously!), the majors, and college baseball. What other sports do you guys like?  Has your level of interest changed over time?

This is not some sort of marketing thing, I'm just curious.

NFL

Being a sports fan in Minnesota, the Timberwolves are pretty boring and hopeless. That leaves the NFL, where Favre-mania is alive and well. Fantasy Football is the next best thing to Fantasy Baseball, although it isn’t even close in the amount of enjoyment.

Kinda follow college basketball and college football

But not too closely - wouldn’t impact my life greatly if they disappeared. My interest in college basketball stems from living in a town where I can go to Pac-10 games by walking up and buying tickets on the day of the game, so I get to see some really good teams usually kick the crap out of the Beavers. I never was able to get tickets to see the Wildcats when I attended the U of A, but I have seen them play a number of times here. I also like soccer, especially around world cup time.

All of em..

Except Soccer, and I even got into the World Cup.

If you can play a fantasy version of it, I follow it (writing a fantasy column does that). Hockey and Basketball I’m more of a local team only guy (Wiz and Caps) with some loyalty to guys I like in other cities. I have season tickets to a D1 Football team (Navy) and watch enough Maryland/GU basketball to know most of the players.

Of course the NFL, that’s a staple of most americans lives. But mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. And unlike other sports you don’t have to retain a ton of stats, rankings or roster info to enjoy it. I used to watch NBA, Nascar, etc - but they are too time consuming.

Bowling...

After baseball, I probably watch bowling more than anything when it’s on. Although, it’s definitely more of a game than it is a sport. But I’m an avid bowler myself…and I find it much better than watching the NFL on Sundays.

I’ll watch the occasional NFL game, usually because there’s nothing else on, but I’m rarely interested or invested in the games. Same with the NBA, which will probably be to an ever lesser degree this year. I’m not a fan of Hockey (I live in Chicago area, didn’t watch a single hawks game) or Soccer….they sports just have little to no entertainment value to me.

I loved watching old UFCs, where they fighters had to win multiple times in one night, and it was only shown once a year….I don’t watch MMA at all anymore.

I do enjoy watching College football, especially if it’s Florida State. And I’ll usually tune into March Madness.

It not for fantasy sports, I wouldn’t have much of any knowledge outside of baseball and bowling.

Hockey and Baseball are about even

but I find that I watch more hockey,

Baseball I can get enjoyment out of listening on a radio feed, and sometimes have to watch the boxscore updates on yahoo because I chose not to purchase the MLB package from Directv this season. I had to choose between hockey and baseball because money is a little tigh,a nd I can’t stand hockey on the radio, baseball still comes over well. Plus to my surprise I get WFAN mMets baseball all the way in Maine.

Family life changed my thinking of football, NASCAR and playing golf

I like football but if I miss the game I don’t care, however I never miss a SuperBowl, I usually miss a few games of the World Series and Stanley Cup. I think there is just too much stuff to get done on the weekends now, I hate sitting watching a game on a nice Sunday afternoon. I do watch MNF usually but b/c of living on the East coast I am in bed by halftime a lot.

I use to watch NASCAR but again Sunday’s I have other stuff to do, a 4 hour race is just too much time. Many times I will catch the end of a race while eating dinner, or a Saturday night race.

I use to play golf, but I got married.

1 was Lebron 1st game. after all the hype I was curious, and he proved to be th ereal deal.

Baseball is #1 for me, by a wide margin, but I’ve learned to appreciate hockey recently. I went to a school that was a hockey power (in the Division III universe) and I now live and work in a town with a huge Division I team. I casually follow the NHL also.

Basketball and football put me to sleep.

Baseball is also #1 by a wide, wide margin.

I keep an eye on the NFL, and by virtue of living in the Northeast, most of my friends and colleagues follow the NHL closely, so I keep up with that just by being around those people.

Other than that, I can watch pretty much anything if it’s on, but I’m not that interested. It’s been a fun World Cup, but I’m mostly into soccer as a national pride thing (the USA, of course, but also Ireland, Germany and Poland).

Baseball has been my No. 1 since I’ve been old enough to have a No. 1.

Baseball . . . and then?

I’m another one with no kids, so I have the time to follow multiple sports. Baseball is Number 1 by a large margin. Hockey is No. 2, and then the NFL comes up third. The NFL used to rank higher, but the game has become staler for me. I will do a set of brackets or three in March Madness, and I have picked college bowl games for fun. The World Cup has intrigued me, but not enough to care about MLS. The NBA? The last NBA game I attended was during the Carter Administration. I do not miss it (and I have two acquaintances in the league office). I hear tell that boxing, NASCAR, tennis and golf are still on TV, and I don’t care. Bullriding? I don’t think so. If I wanted to see one guy beat the daylights out of another guy in a cage, I think I’d ask for a checkup from the neck up.

I am far more interested in baseball than any other sport. Basketball probably next since both of the kids play it and the Mavericks have atways been good if frustrating over the past decade. I don’t follow college basketball much anymore. I’ll get into the Olympics, watch a few minutes of the Tour De France, a few minutes of the world cup, the Superbowl, Tiger Woods in a major championship, etc. so I am not completely out of touch on other sports, but I made a decision a long time ago that I’m not going to schedule around watching any sporting event other than a baseball game.

Some sports I lose interest in if my favorite team isn’t involved (Pittsburgh, WVU, LA Lakers), but others I’ll watch just to watch. I like college much more than pro in terms of football and basketball. In order of specific events

1. Playoff Hockey (if the Pens are in it), nothing better or more exciting
2. March Madness/World Cup (tie because the World Cup is every 4 years)
3. Olympics (Summer then Winter)
4. NBA playoffs
5. playoffs sports with my favorite teams
6. Tennis Majors
7. everything else

For playing, I’ll play basically anything: football, soccer, softball/whiffleball, baskeball, golf, tennis, etc. I wish I could skate well enough to play hockey.

I’ve watched entire Nascar races. Whole rounds of golf. 9-ball action on ESPN. Tennis matches. Gymastics competitions.

Over time, I have found that I’ve lost a bit of the obsessiveness I had as a youth. There used to be a time when I knew 90%+ of the starters on every team, because I collected baseball cards regularly. I still remember my Chris Sabo rookie card!

Now, it seems like half the names I see in the baseball highlights are brand-new to me.

Baseball is definitely at the forefront for me now, though, with the NFL a close second. Still an NBA fan, but it’s a distant third behind MLB and the NFL. I seem to be the only guy on earth not even remotely interested in college sports outside of draft season.

The funny thing about this whole big 3 in Miami thing to me is that people have always complained about parity issues in baseball and football, but now an NBA team has three of the top 5-7 players in the entire league.

When i was young i used to watch basketball, football and baseball. But in college, I felt like I was wasting my life watching sports all the time. However I knew that I enjoyed it also, so I made a decision to pick one sport and forget the others. So i picked baseball and have never looked back. I’m pretty happy with my decision. I get to take winters off (except for trades, rumors, winter meetings etc.) and read, relax, and enjoy not being tied down to what game i’m going to be watching that day.

I see very little NBA here—I agree with this—I love basketball, but can’t watch the NBA, because they have ruined the game—I don’t like the short shot clock, I don’t like illegal defense calls and even independent of Donaghy the officiating has been suspect for years (nobody will ever convince me that that game 6 Sacramento/Lakers wasn’t fixed).

Any way my list of non-MLB….
1, 1A, 1B) NFL (Broncos), World Cup, March Madness
2) College Hockey, Olympics

Basketball

I’m a watcher of several other sports but the only other 1 I am passionate about is basketball. I coach so that influences things but it’s a beutiful game and a 180 for me from baseball which I love for different reasons.

nothing...

basketball and football have become so ghetto and the players so unrelatble and unlikable that I haven’t watched a game in years. Well, football I have watched here and there during family get togethers like Thanksgiving, but I haven’t watched a basketball game since Charles Barkley was still on the Suns.

I will watch most "action sports"

I find the NBA, soccer, and cycling to be boring.

The NFL is king, and I love hockey as well.

I’ll watch almost all the big events, including some of the golf majors, tennis majors, the Olympic sports I normally don’t care about, March Madness, Daytona 500, you name it.

For example, during the Olympics it was difficult to not root for Michael Phelps and what he was doing, but generally speaking, I wouldn’t think twice about watching swimming.

2010 Tigers contracts coming off the books:

Maggs (15M vesting option)
Willis (12M)
Bonderman (12.5M)
Robertson (9.5M still being paid this year)
Inge (6.6M)
Damon (8M)
Everett (1.5M)
Laird (3.9M)

2011 is the year of the Tiger!

Football and hockey

Also, does “Betting on why the cops showed up at my neighbor’s house THIS time” count as a sport?

Hockey

Then a large clump of everything else that oscillates from sport to sport in terms of level of interest.

Like Rick Bosetti my goal in life is not to do well but to piss on things.

Baseball and football (the real football) are joint top

Closely followed by rugby, cricket, golf, tennis and then NFL. Don’t really get to watch much NHL anymore and I have really gone off the NBA.

I'm far more passionate about football than I am baseball.

Baseball is an easier sport to talk about and be knowledgeable of, so it dominates my sports-related internet time, but it will never replace football as my favorite entertainment.

I may be to the point where I like baseball more now than college football, but it’s always been close and, honestly, that’s mostly probably due to the Rangers being good.

I’m also a huge fan of college basketball, and one of those people who actually follows it before March.

I follow the MLB and NFL very closely, with ancillary interests in the NHL, NCAA football and MMA.

I follow NCAA football, Baseball, football, hockey, and basketball.
But my favorite non-baseball sport is lacrosse.

Favourite sports…I may be the only one that lists baseball third…but I love playing fantasy sports and am in an uber competitive keeper league for baseball. I’m from Toronto btw…

1. Hockey
2. NFL
3. MLB
4. NBA

NBA UnWatchable

I love most sports, and college basketball, but the NBA is beyond trash. How can anyone watch a game of Free Throws is beyond me? All the do is call a foul every 20 seconds, the games have no flow.

College Basketball

College basketball runs a close second to baseball. I’m Tar Heel born and bred. Anyone who went to an ACC school or lives in the area knows there is nothing else like it. I lived in Memphis for years and they tried to convince me college football was better. I told them when UT and Florida are 8 miles apart, like Carolina and Duke, and Alabama is another 20 miles away (like NC State) then we’ll talk excitement. You guys are too far away to really hate each others fans.

NFL runs a popular third with me. College football and college baseball are right there, too. I pay attention to hockey, but not as much as the other sports. The NBA is up there with professional wrestling - I seriously think it is rigged (cite 1985 draft).

Baseball by a wide margin over anything else. Then horse racing.
