Rangers Call Up Justin Smoak
BREAKING #Rangers news: Sources indicated that Texas called up first baseman Justin Smoak from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
http://twitter.com/Kevin_Goldstein/status/12679679872
Jon Daniels must read Fangraphs:
Smoak has a really good approach at the plate, and while he doesn’t have Davis’ raw power, he puts the bat on the ball enough to drive the ball into the gap with regularity. With the Rangers offense scuffling, they could use Smoak’s ability to get on base. Davis may yet turn into a quality big league first baseman, but the Rangers are in a pennant race, and they can’t dig too big of a hole early in the season.
Texas’ best line-up includes Smoak at first base. Already three games back in the AL West and losers of six in a row, it’s time for them to make the move.

If not, I’m the first case.

He poked me in the eye with it.
I didn’t mind.

Question
Where do you think Ron Washington bats him?
Personally, I think it would be waste to have his on-base ability at the bottom of the lineup. Then again, if you put him too high, that’s an awful lot of pressure on his shoulders to come in ‘save’ this team in the middle of a losing streak.

hit him where davis was.
6th. longoria started there…

Yeah, especially since
right now Kinsler is still on the DL and the Rangers’ catchers can’t hit. Bat him 6th ahead of Arias/Blanco, catcher, and Borbon.
Beethoven sucks.

6th until Kinsler comes back
then 7th.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.

This is a really smart move.
That division is close enough that calling up Smoak now possesses a strong advantage.

Thank God
I don’t know if he’ll start off with good power numbers, but he’s a MLB hitter already with a MLB approach. I’d be shocked if he ever played in the minors again.

Same.
The approach is phenomenal, and I feel that in his prime he will have no trouble putting up 30-35 HRs a year.
The power will come big time.

So Davis
Can go to OKC and get several hundred plate appearances to try to become Henry Rodriguez or Mark Reynolds.
Beethoven sucks.

You think he's about to start throwing 101 MPH fastballs with zero command?
Shawn Spencer: Ahoy there! Um, yes. Right! My name is Shawn Spencer! This is my first mate Hummingbird Saltalamacchia!
Burton Guster: Hello!
Shawn Spencer: We were turned around-- discombobulated! We... we just now realized we're in restricted waters.
Burton Guster: Just now! And we both have hepatitis!

So what are your bold predictions for his line this season?
.280/.360/.440 or something like that too optimistic?
by oplaid on Apr 23, 2025 3:52 AM EDT reply actions
a line of .250/.330/.420
would be an improvement over Davis

I expect mostly doubles power this year, but a decent walk rate and more power later on.

Ike Davis
It will be interesting comparing Smoak and Davis, with their careers starting within a week of each other.

I don't think it'll be all that close
Smoak by miles.

Possibly
But I’m not so sure. Davis has done nothing but tear the cover off the ball since the start of 2009.
