4/22 MiLB Discussion
Ha! I’ve never started one of these. Gotta learn some time…
Freddie Freeman on the afternoon (Gwinnett 8 to 3 win over the Norfolk Tides in the series finale):
4-for-4, 2 HR, 2B, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB.
His OPS goes from 505 to 731. I love the early season stats.
Aroldis Chapman going today. Also: Scheppers, Rowell, Lyles, J.J. Hoover, Neil Ramirez
Others pitching today?
What else is going on out there?

Way to go Freddie!!!
As a Brave fan this is awesome news! Hope he keeps it up, I guess it took that one HR yesterday to get him going.

I'd preer to hear what he's throwing these days, first.
If he’s still 88-91 with the fastball with a loopy curve and average change and getting by on the strength of his command, he’s not moving up . . .he’s the exact same dude.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
good point
It’s interesting, b/c Lyles strikes me as the kind of fellow where if each one of his pitches improves by just a little bit, then he’s a true top 10 prospect with bona fide ace upside.
Brett Anderson is the Truth. Brett Anderson is divine presence. Brett Anderson is eternal life. Brett Anderson is within you. Brett Anderson is here. Brett Anderson is Now.
by Frederick0220 on Apr 23, 2025 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions
eh, maybe, but probably not
The command is still going to have to hold up at upper levels, and his stuff is going to have improve across the board to a larger degree than you’re suggesting.
If all works out and his stuff does get significantly better, could see him as a 2.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions
i'm saying that there's a good chance
that his stuff gets better. he’s still high school aged… he’s still learning how to throw breaking balls.
by daveh33 on Apr 23, 2025 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions
well yeah
It’ll need to get better for him to be more than a No. 4 starter. And I’m guessing it will get a bit better . . .I’m expecting a middle-of-the-pack #3 starter.
I don’t see the point in saying that he’ll be a future ace if his stuff gets better. His stuff wasn’t that kind of good coming out of high school and wasn’t supposed to improve that much, hence why most teams had him in the 6-10 round range. And secondly . . .I’m trying to find examples of guys like Lyles who then became No. 1 type starters, and I’m not finding a whole lot there.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions
You seem to just be hating on Lyles.
His performance last year and command were exceptional.
His stuff is decent, too.
He’s just 19.
Everything in his profile is excellent with the exception of his stuff.
If his stuff improves, he could be a #1 type, and the age thing helps, as he has plenty of time to add velo and iron out the kinks.
Brett Anderson is the Truth. Brett Anderson is divine presence. Brett Anderson is eternal life. Brett Anderson is within you. Brett Anderson is here. Brett Anderson is Now.
by Frederick0220 on Apr 23, 2025 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions
not really
His performance last year, quite good. Command is good as well, not “exceptional”, although maybe I’m nitpicking there.
Stuff is okay. And honestly, maybe I’m wrong for this, but when you say something to the effect of “everything about him as a pitcher is great except for his pitches” . . .well, that doesn’t really sound like a No. 1 in the making.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 3:38 AM EDT up reply actions
Command not exceptional...
I know that 1.8 BB/9 signifies exceptional control, but a walk rate that low seems to be pointing towards exceptional command.
Brett Anderson is the Truth. Brett Anderson is divine presence. Brett Anderson is eternal life. Brett Anderson is within you. Brett Anderson is here. Brett Anderson is Now.
by Frederick0220 on Apr 23, 2025 3:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I've seen the numbers
I’m going off of the scouting reports that say his 2 seam fastball command is great, 4 seam command is below-average, curve and change command both above-average.
I would consider “exceptional” command to have nothing below-average and/or multiple 60+ grades. And while Lyles is quite good, he’s not THAT good.
This has little to do with his age, as there have been guys coming out of high school who have gotten such praise. Tim Alderson and Brett Anderson come to mind.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 4:38 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not sure why you seem to assume fastball velocity is so important to success? There are plenty of #1 and #2 starters in the big leagues who sit around 90 MPH on their fastball, and they’re not all lefties, either.
Shields, Wainwright, Hudson, Dempster… on the list goes. And you might say “But they have plus secondary pitches!” Sure, but what makes you think Lyles won’t as well? You’re acting like he has no room for improvement in either his velocity or his secondary pitches, which to me is frankly ridiculous when you’re talking about a guy just barely out of high school.
Besides, I tend to lend more credence to stats the higher up a player gets in the minors. If Lyles can dominate like this all year (or even show any improvement over last season’s performance at all) the results alone are enough for me to peg him as a potential ace. And I don’t care how he does it in terms of his stuff; you don’t fix what isn’t broken.
by OremLK on Apr 23, 2025 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
You should always look at stuff
If not, you’ll be fooled by the Petit’s, Clippard’s and Alderson’s of the world. Lyles is not in that category, but I don’t think he currently profiles as a top of the rotation arm either.
by jar75 on Apr 23, 2025 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think he does either, but if he very well may a year from now.
by OremLK on Apr 23, 2025 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions
He could
If his stuff gets better. But saying he’s just out of hs is false. He’s had over 150 pro innings. He’s not nearly as incomplete a product as you are suggesting.

Whoops
Silly mobile.
Lyles is going to have three above-average pitches, including a 70 change, and still have plus-plus command at the major league level?
That’s quite the leap for a dude who has shown the raw potential for one of those traits thus far.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 3:20 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Stuff
The reason why I think velocity correlates so well with success is . . .velocity DOES correlate well with success.
His pitches might get better, but it’s not something that you should just assume will happen. Guys with truly plus pitches tend to show the potential for them in HS. Lyles didn’t, and he didn’t project to develop as such.
by mrkupe on Apr 23, 2025 3:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think it’s important that you’re able to pitch above 90MPH on average, but after that you start to see some diminishing returns and other aspects of pitching start to become more important, particularly command.

This is this guy’s first post in two years, and he dedicates it to yours truly.
Thanks for brightening up my night!
Draft sucked, and now I’m swamped with homework.
You rock it, broham!

I wouldn’t exactly call b2b good games red hot, but he defiantly looks like he is coming around.

Beat me to Dee
He’s my other “guy” this year I added to my minor league system.
by Jaeti on Apr 23, 2025 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions
4 BBs on the year...
Does it sound like I’m taking another shot at him? I’m not!
4 BBs and 10 Ks in 60 PAs this year is actually an improvement. He had 12 walks all of last year in 458 PAs.
His line was atrocious before tonight, though: .250/.300/.357. And, oh yeah, he may not stick at 3B.

Yeah
I always want to bang him on the plate discipline thing, too. But he’s more than doubled the walk rate in the early going. Classic half-full, half-empty.

Obviously nit-picking here, but I'd love to see Posey show a little more pop before he's called up.
I know he kept it around a .200 IsoP last year, but he’s the kind of guy I expect to click and DOMINATE in AAA before carrying it to the bigs.

Nice start for Main, there
Scheppers has 3 baserunners in his 4 appearances. 3. I’m worried about his splits, though, twice as many hits allowed against lefties. :)
Mendonca is the anti-Smoak. 13 K’s, 0 BB’s, 0 HR’s so far this year.
Beethoven sucks.
by t ball on Apr 23, 2025 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions
YEAH
Scheppers has been flat dealing. 13K’s in 8 innings. I suppose he’ll see AAA action in the next few months and then possibly the big club if they need the help.

It probably depends on how Texas’s season goes.

June, I think.

What do they do with Feliz?
Move him to the rotation, or use Scheppers to set him up?

Feliz closes. I’d hate to be a lineup looking at Scheppers in the 8th and Feliz in the 9th.
