OT: The NFL Draft
I may be taking a bit of a liberty here, but A) I know a lot of us are going to be talking about in other places anyways and B) I always like seeing the different ways that we think about amateur prospects across different sports. I was thinking this could be a catch-all thread . . .speculation, thoughts on players you've seen/know a lot about, etc. Anybody want to weigh in with their thoughts? I'll be especially interested on a personal level to see where the Big 12 guys go, as I'm a University of Texas season ticket holder . . .

Big fan of Tyson Alualu
He’s not a workout warrior but he’s got great instincts, intelligence and game strength.

No workout warriors
If you see a workout warrior run the other direction, unless he is already known as a great player. this is a problem in all sports but especially football because they have the combine to display how great they are athletically. If a guy doesn’t play well on gameday but he is a ‘workout warrior’ nothing is going to change just because you draft him. He’s still going to suck when it comes time to put the pads on, I’m amazed at the repeated stupidity of GM’s in Football and all sports that get suckered in by the great athlete that just can’t play, everyone thinks they can take the great athlete and teach him how to be great, there are some things you just can’t teach.

Definitely think teams are smarter these days
about falling for the Mike Mamula types but there still are quite a few out there that draft more on physical skills than actual talent. The idea being the pro game is so much faster and stronger all around compared to college footbal that if a player isn’t a superlative athlete, he probably won’t make for a good or successful football player. That leads to players like Alualu - lesser athletes but smarter football players - being incredibly underrated. Scouts see a player like him and question whether he’ll have the requisite physical ability to make it at the next level.
Unlike baseball, where you need an underlying skill set to succeed even if you are a remarkable athlete, there are teams (e.g. Oakland) that still believe you can turn an athlete into a quality football player with little instruction. I don’t necessarily buy that.

I joked the other day to a buddy of mine that the Raiders won’t have interest in Roethlisberger until they see what kind of 40 time he runs.
by PhillyFriar on Apr 22, 2025 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Like Chris Johnson
All that’s important is that Roethlisberger has ‘gettin-away-from-the-cops’ speed.

What does everyone think of the changes to the draft?
I have to say, I always looked forward to draft weekend when it was just a Saturday-Sunday thing. I’ll be watching tonight and tomorrow, but it doesn’t have the same feel to me.

I've blocked my entire weekend in the past drafts to just watch every round
I don’t really know why I started doing it, but I’ve grown to look forward to watching all the rounds, all the picks, knowing some names in the later rounds.
I just hope the extra time is used to spread the love around - instead of just focusing on a couple of teams and players each night (which is what ESPN usually does in its coverage).

It sucks
If only because it gave me an excuse to barbecue and get drunk on a wonderful Saturday afternoon in April.
Not that I really need an excuse.
by ThomasG on Apr 22, 2025 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed. Maybe part of it’s a familiarity thing — we’ve only ever known the weekend draft — but it’ll feel a bit drawn out to me over 3 days.
by PhillyFriar on Apr 22, 2025 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I get the idea, I just think it's weird
They’re sticking it in prime time because they think it’ll draw big ratings . . .but I don’t think they realize that TV coverage on a Saturday afternoon (where there is nothing else to watch) and TV coverage in prime time on a weekday night (where there is lots to watch) are two totally different things. They better have some compelling coverage and interesting stories (and lots of them, because people aren’t going to sit around to listen to 25 minutes of Tim Tebow coverage, even if he goes tonight), or people are just going to change the channel.
The even weirder thing is that it’s just put greater emphasis on the fact that teams increasingly see early first round picks (you know, the ones that the fans are most excited about) as excessively risky investments). Almost all of the teams would rather be picking back in the 20s, and EVERYBODY wants those first 10-15 picks of the second round. With an extra day to go back to the tape and re-evaluate guys that you didn’t think you’d have a shot at, or to concentrate on that pool of players that you were considering for the second round . . .well, that’s just the cherry on the second round sundae.

Honestly, I may be one of the few who thinks Tebow will really be a successful NFL quarterback
If you look around the league, being a successful quarterback is so much less about raw arm strength than it is about smarts and awareness. How many times is a guy going to have to be asked to sling it 60 yards down field? Conversely, how many times is a guy going to have to make a split second decision of whether or not to check down to his safety valve or to try to thread the needle on the 15 yard post? Not to mention, I’m doubting that Tebow ends up in a mug shot anytime soon. He’s the exact kind of player I’d be willing to invest big bucks in. And as for a few other thoughts:
-Taylor Mays is going to make a lot of GMs look foolish if they let him slip to the 2nd round. Dude is a for real talent.
- I know I should be more scared by Pierre-Paul, but for some reason, I think he could be a successful end rusher in the right system.
- Dez Bryant made one mistake, and suddenly he’s deemed a pariah. I’ve heard scouts say his talent level is unquestionably higher than Crabtree’s was last year. I wouldn’t hesitate for my team to pull the trigger, if it weren’t that my team picks 28th.
- Final part of my rant is about my team, the Jets. I’m a Mets fan and a Knicks fan, so please just allow me to gloat for a little. If the Jets don’t make it to the superbowl this season, I will be disappointed. They remind me of the Steelers in Date Rape Mcgee’s (Aka Ben Rothlisberger) 2nd season

Gotta disagree on Tebow. That’s not saying he doesn’t have a shot to be a successful NFL quarterback, because his work ethic and intangibles are obviously fantastic, but he’s having to totally revamp his throwing motion while learning how to actually read a defense. He’s essentially a glorified developmental quarterback, and while those guys can pan out, it’s not a risk I want my team taking in the 2nd round, whatever his reputation.
Also, Mays bothers me in that for all his physical gifts, he’s not really a playmaker (4 career INTs, 1 FF as a 4-year starter). Maybe a personal preference, but I like safeties with ball skills.
Agreed on Bryant though. As an Eagles fan, the TO situation has scared me off of prima donna wide receivers, but someone will get one heck of a player far below where his true talent level dictates. He’s certainly a risk, and there’s a chance he can’t get it together, but there’s also a chance that he’s another Randy Moss (well, obviously, not quite as good as Moss, but you know what I mean).

Im a big cowboys fan
and I would be ecstatic if he just stayed a cowboy (okie st to dallas ha). I wouldnt even mind a mild trade up to get him.

kinda agree, kinda disagree
Agreed on Mays (he’s going to be a starter for you somewhere, and does have a ton of upside), disagree on Pierre-Paul (no way he makes a team look good).
Bryant? Gotta disagree again. He’s really talented, although the Crabtree talk is silly . . .Crabtree might be a prima donna, but he brings it. Dude was a QB in high school, redshirted first year of college, transformed into a dominant receiver. His work ethic and commitment to becoming generally awesome is phenomenal. Bryant is a flake.
For some weird reason, though, I can’t shake the feeling that if the Raiders do indeed pick at #8, then they’re taking Bryant. I know on the surface it doesn’t make sense . . .but if they’re going to draft a dude with great measurables and a high risk factor, and they’re sitting there watching the tape, which of these guys looks better: Bryant, Pierre-Paul, or Bruce Campbell? This is a total Raiders pick.

Taylor Mays is big, strong, and fast, but
he runs around like a jack-o-lantern.
He should be decent but nothing special.

He could be...
a guy like him should be the greatest player ever, but probably won’t. If he was smart he would have come out last year and gotten drafted in the top ten in a weak safety class.
by joegonzo on Apr 22, 2025 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions
maybe
He is an otherworldly athlete . . .I just don’t think he’s that polished. While he did play with a lot of very talented other defensive players, I’m not sure I saw one game out of him where I said, “that guy is definitely the best player on our defense tonight”. Maybe that doesn’t matter, but if you’re spending a first round pick on a guy then I want to be able to watch game tape of the guy where he clearly stands out for his skills. Kindle just overwhelmed dudes with his athleticism.
I think Kindle might be getting something of a pass because Brian Orakpo had a terrific rookie year. Great upside, just riskier than you might expect.

I'm a Browns fan
It’s Clausen, Berry, or bust.
Somehow, I really see Mangina fucking this up again, dropping in the 1st round, then taking Colt McCoy in the 2nd.

how can you argue with Berry?
High first round picks are all about making sure that you don’t make the wrong choice rather than making the right choice. And Berry sure as hell isn’t going to be the wrong one, no matter where he goes.
Having watched Colt McCoy all year long, I’ll definitely agree that he’s got no business going in round 2. Great makeup, just a great kid, great teammate. He doesn’t have the arm that you’d want, but that’s not why he shouldn’t go in round 2. The real reason is: this guy just makes too many mistakes. I know that might sound silly just from looking at the numbers, but this guy made at least one “he really doesn’t want to win the Heisman, does he?” boner every half. Would love him as a backup, would love to see him succeed as more than that, just don’t think it’ll happen.
