4/14 MiLB Discussion Thread
Usual Spiel. Texas League has the day off. Exciting day as a Cubs fan, with the top 2 overall arms and 2 of the top 3 lefty starter prospects in the system (likely ... depends on if Rusin is starting in Daytona). Some intriguing matchups. Cashner/Withrow and Aumont/Drabek both feature 2 guys that some consider as pen arms and 2 youngsters who could be poised to kick up another notch in prospect rankings, to a potentially elite level. Lance Lynn vs. Jay Jackson is intriguing and could be a big league matchup sooner than later. Melville/Hagadone stands out as well. Perhaps my favorite matchup (doesn't mean best, just the one that fascinates me the most), though, is down in Low A, Antigua vs. Martinez Mesa (granted, considering how poor the offense is in Peoria right now, Antigua may need to be lights out). A host of other intriguing arms on the docket, like Teheran, Familia, May, Peralta, Moore, Minor, and others.
And of course, there is the "Can he get above 90?" watch with Madison Bumgarner.
PCL: Brandon McCarthy, Sean O'Sullivan, Lance Lynn vs. Jay Jackson, Chuck Lofgren vs. Phil Humber, Scott Elbert vs. Rick Vandenhurk, Luke French, Sam Deduno, Madison BumgarnerIL: Jake Arrieta, Hector Rondon, Travis Wood, Zach McAllister
SL (MONT/CAR, BIR/MOB not listed as of typing): Andrew Cashner vs. Chris Withrow, Amaury Rivas, Mike Minor vs. Dan Cortes
TL: Off
EL (HAR/BOW not listed yet): Kyle Drabek vs. Phillipe Aumont, Clayton Tanner, Carlos Gutierrez vs. Ryne Miller, Jeremy Bleich vs. Scott Barnes
FSL (DUN/DAY not listed as of typing): Wily Peralta, Trevor May, Jeurys Familia, Bryan Morris, Matt Moore
CAR (POT/WS not listed as of typing): Tim Melville vs. Nick Hagadone, Brock Huntzinger, Randall Delgado vs. Rick Zagone
CAL (LE/LAN not listed as of typing): Wilfredo Boscan, Tyler Chatwood vs. Ethan Hollingsworth, Kenn Kasparek vs. Aaron Miller, Trevor Harden
MWL (WIS/BUR, QC/CLI, LC/LAN, BEL/KC, SB/GL not listed as of typing), : Jeffry Antigua vs. Fabio Martinez Mesa, Jerry Sullivan,
SAL (LEX/KAN, HIC/ASH not listed as of typing): Chris Heston vs. James Fuller, Julio Teheran, Jarred Cosart vs. Josh Smoker, Nate Baker vs. Graham Stoneburner (big arm, IIRC), Chad James
Would like to know more about: Pedro Villarreal (8th round pick from 2008), Reidier Gonzalez (short, stocky righty had a good start out last time and decent 09 numbers, only 24 in AAA), Carlos Torres (28, but mildly curious about arsenal), Matt Fairel (numbers look solid), Shawn Haviland, Mark Sorensen, Johnny Dorn, LJ Gagnier, Jared Hughes, Elih Villanueva (excellent control, what's his stuff?)

I had been wondering why I hadn’t seen him start recently. Anxiously waiting to see what kind of year he’ll have. Only 1 walk in his first outing
Will he be limited in terms of innings in the early going? Only went three innings his first time out

In addition to the ones toonsterwu highlighted in his opening, I’m looking forward to Casher vs. Withrow and Drabek vs. Aumont. Lots of great names going overall, should be interesting to see the results tonight.

damn impressive performance by Cashner
I have had my doubts about his ability to be a starter, but he’s starting to carry his stuff deeper into games. If he keeps this up, damn. 5 shutout, 9 K’s, 71 pitches, and 4:2 GO/FO. Getting groundballs, being more efficient.
Granted, only the 2nd game of the year, but sure is exciting to follow. Early reports from the last start suggested his slider was back, as it went somewhat missing last year in regards to consistency. Circle change is still in development, but there have been positive enough reports.
If Cashner can continue to do what he’s doing tonight, with the plus stuff and improved durability, he’s easily a top 50 prospect if not higher. damn exciting.
Yes, I know, way early.

yeah, way early
Until he can show he can carry a starter’s workload on a consistent basis with a three pitch mix, he’s not that kind of prospect.

agreed
Even last year, his fastball movement/velo “stuff” was fine into the 70-80 pitch mix (i’m sure there was a start here and there where he didn’t carry it, but for the most part, it was fine). I made the drive down south once to catch him, and my only thought was that, if he had his slider, and he could carry the slider as he was doing with the fastball, then I would have far lesser concerns about him. He “found” his slider in AFL.
At the very least, he’s answered one thing this year - that he can be a dominant closer. That was a bigger question than most acknowledged last year, as the slider was missing as a consistent weapon.
Actually, the thing that could signifcantly hamper his development as a starter might have little to do with him. If he continues to be this strong, I can easily see the Cubs calling him up for pen duty sooner than later. I’d rather Cashner spend at least half the season in Tennessee before pondering a move up to Iowa for a tad more work.
by toonsterwu on Apr 14, 2025 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Slider
Perhaps he was so focused on improving his changeup that the slider fell back a bit.
And starting your career in the bullpen isn’t that bad a way to break into the major leagues, just as long as they allow him to pitch his way out of it..
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

He’s the third youngest player in the league, and it looks like he’s just picking up where he left off last year in Rome. Dominating. He could be primed for a big year; of course this time last year I was saying that about Locke and Rohrbough. But I like Delgado a lot more than those two, if for no other reason than because of his youth, and his easy gas.

Cubs Offense
Daytona got hammered, but
Brett Jackson went 3/4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB. In 26 AB’s, he has a BB/K of 8:4. The power isn’t quite there yet. He’s definitely answering questions about the discipline so far. There have been very positive reports about his plate discipline and his strike zone judgment. Granted, as with anything this time of year, SSS, but so far, so good. He did have an error.
Kyler Burke also went 2/4 with a 2B, 2 RBI’s, and a BB. Good sign.
Vitters went 1/5, 1 RBI, 1 K. LeMahieu went 0/3 with 2 RBI’s, 1 BB, 1 K.
Up a level, Tennessee destroyed Chatt 15-2. Outside of Casher,
Castro went 2/6, with 1 R, 1 2B, and 3 RBI, and a SB..
Flaherty: 2/3 2 R.
Guyer: 2/5, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K.
Iowa beat Memphis 5-2.
Peoria’s trailing CR 7-4.
Hak-ju Lee so far 2/5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 SB.
Watkins - 1/4, BB, K, SB.
Cerda: 1/3, RBI, 2 BB, K.
Unless the P-Chiefs have a big rally, those 3 are likely done with their AB’s.

Reports last year was he was sitting 92-94 with his fastball, and his out pitch is a good curve ball. Like most guys his age change up was still a work in progress.
