4-16 minor league discussion
Haven't looked at all the pitching probables, but Kiker, S. Castro, and Chris Dwyer are pitching. Probably some other good ones too.
have to fill up the 75 word quota or whatever. so here's an interesting thing I saw from Ben Badler's prospect hot sheet chat.
-
Brent (Appleton): Has Montgomery developed enough in his short time since the top 100 to justify a higher ranking? Or to put it another way—is he already a top 20 prospect in baseball?
Ben Badler: Yes. This guy is every bit as good as Casey Kelly, if not better, yet I get 20 times more questions about Kelly (well, not today). Three pitches at least above-average, good command, a good delivery, athleticism and complete domination in High-A as a 20-year-old? Not sure what more there is anyone could ask for from a pitching prospect.
i dunno, seems like jumping the gun because of mostly 1 awesome start. then again, if he improved the offspeed pitches as much as the hot sheet makes it seem like...maybe not ridiculous.

I'm a big fan.
I think this guy isn’t getting enough play. I know the showed up 15 pounds lighter thing is a cliche, but Jenkins lost serious weight and looks nasty.

won't be taken seriously til AA
He was drafted in large part because of his pitchability . . .the fact that he’s running through A ball is not surprising. We’ll have to wait til AA to see if he’s legitimately better than the No. 3 ceiling that got attached to him.

Yeah, I pretty much dragged him onto the BB top 100.
He came in exactly at #100 after we removed Danny Duffy. I had Josh Bell at #70, fwiw. I’ve been dying to post my personal top 100… but we’ve been going back and forth about a feature on it.
Al Skorupa: For me, D’Arnaud is better than those guys. The age is an issue, definitely. I don’t think D’Arnaud will definitely be the best hitter of that group you named. Nor do I think he’ll clearly be the best defender. I do think he’s the guy with the best mix of the two. I love the power and athleticism and D’Arnaud’s receiving skills have impressed me… though they still need some work. D’Arnaud was particularly impressive down the stretch in 2009 and I think that’s the player we will see more of going forward.
It’s a little early to call this one… two weeks in and all, but I’m feeling pretty good about most of my placements. It was a bold call, but one I felt good about.
The ones I regret so far are:
1) Not dropping Bumgarner even lower. I got in so many heated discussions over this guy… and I felt #35 was a safe bet. Too many bright people argued for the pitchability… and I thought “maybe I’m crazy… maybe the velocity WILL come back and I’m overreacting.” Of course, dropping him to #35 in February was certainly an outlier.
2) I put Aaron Hicks at #17 when I wasn’t sure about his bat. As with most of these I feel I subliminally let the opinions of the community sway me so that my list didn’t seem ridiculous… know what I mean by that? I think I did this because of Ryan Westmoreland guilt (#16). A number of bright people I respect argued Hicks over Westmoreland… swayed me to put him right next to him as a hedge. I still think Hicks is a great prospect, but I’d drop him lower. I had him above Dom Brown and Micheal Taylor… and I think that’s too high.
3) Aaron Crow at #47. I last updated my list on Feb 15th… I intended to go back and update it (still might) but I would have pushed him higher. Crow and Gibson confused me.
4) Jordan Lyles at #48. I kept hearing reports about improved stuff. Not sure at all now. I think all 3 top Astros prospects are overrated.
5) I had Starlin Castro at #56. Not sure how high I’d go still, but I warmed to him even more after that. Secondary skills still scare me, but I really like the bat.
6) Adrian Cardenas at #75. Still not sure what the big deal is. I’d probably drop him even more now. Again, too many bright people argued for him and I feel it swayed me.
7) Dan Hudson at #78. I was wrong. His stuff was better than I thought. I turned around on him so much I actually drafted him over Alex Colome (#36 on my list) in my dynasty league. The more I investigated the more I liked him. This one still concerns me, though. I’d definitely move Hudson up a lot, but Colome is a better prospect to my mind - for fantasy purposes Tampa takes it so slow with their pitchers & they have a million good pitchers & Colome could end up in relief (killing his fantasy value for me). Strong chance I regret this move, but TINSTAAPP - Hudson was MLB ready.
8) I had Wilking Rodriguez at #82 - high then. Wish I had the balls to go even higher. Love him.
9) Same thing with Tyson Ross (#93)
10) Drew Storen #92. I again thought I was overlooking him and found a place for him. Wish I hadn’t. He hasn’t done anything to change my mind… I just wasn’t 100% on it to begin with and if I did it over he’d be off. Not sure his stuff justifies a top 100 placement.
11) Jose Iglesias and Hak Ju Lee were #97 and #100. I copped out. I liked them better than Alcides Escobar (#87) and I didn’t put them there. I’m not at all convinced Escobar is a special prospect/player. Does not impress me at all. I don’t think he will ever hit much. This has nothing to do with his slow start - I regretted this the moment I did it, but I was scared enough of looking like an a**hole dropping him all the way to #87. I could easily see him becoming Neifi Perez, part 2.
Misses I wish I could have found room for: #101 Garrett Richards, #103 Chad Jenkins (lost weight, looks awesome), #106 Fabio Martinez, #112 Matt Hobgood, #113 Reymond Fuentes, #117 TJ House, #119 Ian Desmond,
Overall, I’m VERY happy with my list this year, though.

Thoughtful post, dawg.
I read the d’Arnaud summation last night, and I completely agree; the receiving skills and the pop are very intriguing.
That seems to be the case with Hicks — it was almost like a package deal with Westmoreland. Westy was a top 25 guy everywhere, and people felt obligated to place Hicks right around Westy, because each shares prolific tools in center.
Only problem is that Westmoreland hits a baseball hard, while Hicks doesn’t. That, my friend, is a SERIOUS problem.
Castro’s bat makes a pre-pubescent boy cream himself. Fa sho.
Tell me about Wilking Rodriguez.
I had El Brujo at #37.
The $8.2 million contract for a teenager, holding of his own in the AFL at 19, and his picture-perfect swing convinced me that the bat was legit.
I would be shocked if he wasn’t a top 20 guy at year’s end.

Adjustment Time
The Giants need to thoroughly run the kid thru MRIs and then change his mechanics like they did when he first arrived
by wilriv21 on Apr 16, 2025 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mechanics
I thought they tried changing his mechanics when they first drafted him and the results weren’t good; then he went back to his old mechanics and started putting up those ridiculous numbers.
Badler said in today’s chat that he simply thinks this is what Bumgarner is now. There ARE kids who simply lose velocity and he appears to be one of them. The thing is that his secondary stuff was never really that great and now you have a guy with average velocity and decent secondary stuff.

Re:
I’d like a few more reports about his stuff. I listened to a game of his last year and he was sitting around 92 — which is obviously good but probably not good enough by itself to make him a top 30 guy. I want to know what his velocity is like this year; how are the secondary pitches coming; etc.
What he has done is given good indication that the improvements that he showed with his control are for real. Admittedly it’s a small sample size, but he’s now walked 3 guys in 11 IP (2.45BB/ 9IP) this year — which is on par with the 37BB in 140IP he had last year (2.38BB / 9IP).
I’m planning to see Simon in a few weeks when the Missions make their way to Frisco. I’ll do my best to get out there and let everyone know how he looks.

The last three all stood out to me before last year’s draft as overrated . . .they’re not doing much to change that.
Owings still makes me think of Charlie Culberson. Borchering has good raw potential but they’ve pushed him too hard, his plate discipline is just really shaky.

kind of
I’m all for being patient, especially with youngsters in full season ball, but there’s other reasons to be concerned with them besides the numbers. Borchering and Davidson are both very questionable defensively. Owings isn’t so much well-rounded as he is a guy with very average-ish tools . . .nothing stands out, and he doesn’t show the plate discipline that would make me think he can make the most of those tools at the plate. Defensively, he’s not a shortstop. Good makeup, but that’s about it for me . . .looks like a future utility guy if he makes it.

but opposing teams still haven’t figured out how to score much against him. i do predict a big step back in the later parts of this year as more and more hitters begin to figure him out.
i also saw that zach duke seemed to pitch another solid game…again. that’s 3 in a row for the bucs’ so called “ace.” has he figured something out this year, or is he just hot at the start of the year like last season

last season at ASU Leake walked very few. His stuff has such great movement. The key to his career will be if he can come closer to strike zone and survive. Wonder if the kid thinks he could be hammered if he pitched in the zone.

So, there goes that excuse.

0 for 3 against lefties

Arodys Vizcaino: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, now has a 6.30 ERA through his first two games.

Mike Stanton - 1-4, BB, HBP, RBI. He’ll always strike out a lot, IMO but, he’s doing a lot better job of contributing to rallies early on - has drawn at least one walk in each game so far - .538/ .593/ 1.131 OPS
Yonder Alonso got it goin’ tonight with a run scoring single, double, walk, 2-4. C’mon man, I believe in you kid!

you really should've been here two years ago when this meant something
Don’t get me wrong, the “Rowell sucks” line never gets old, but it would have been especially timely back when he was first breaking into full season ball, when it became apparent how ridiculously raw he was.
Good arm, good raw power, no clue what to do with it . . .I wonder if his arm is good enough to take a look at him as a pitcher.

Sample size
And there aren’t really power questions. By all accounts, he profiles to be a 25 home run hitter in the majors. By the same account, he doesn’t ever project to hit many more than that. I don’t think there are many questions, rather upside limitations

Batted-ball Splits and HRs
Wallace has way more power potential than the 20-25 HRs he is pegged for, the problem has been his extremely level swing which produces very low fly-ball rates. You cant hit HRs if you’re not hitting the ball in the air, and Wallace’s batted ball splits are fairly unusual for a guy his size/power.
My speculation is whether or not he has altered something in his swing. Yeah, the sample size is really small but its something to look at. Last year Wallace produced a very low 28.7% flyball rate, the year before that it was 28.8%. So far this year he is up to 39.1%. If he keeps hitting the ball like that he is a 30+ HR hitter.
