Half Dozen JuCo Names to Watch
Hey guys, I feel a little guilty for doing back-to-back fanposts, but I have another piece on my blog that some of you may have interest in.
I've done a writeup of 6 of the best JuCo names to watch for the 2010 season. I have another 115 or so that will probably get into my MLB Draft Notebook, so this is just the top of the top.
Here's an excerpt on Burch Smith, a sophomore righty for Howard JC in Texas:
Smith is a holdover from the historic 63-1 team from the 2009 season, and he’s their best returning arm and number one starter. Blessed with a pro body, Smith’s arm has really started to develop over the past year. He was drafted as a 49th-rounder a year ago by the Indians, but it was more of a follow approach than any real attempt at signing him. Undrafted out of high school, he had the talent to go in the mid-teens a year ago, but was simply only interested in returning to Howard after a wildly successful freshman campaign. The result has been a big step forward in terms of his velocity and command, and he could easily go in the first two rounds in June, higher than either [Jake] Eliopoulos or teammate [Damien] Magnifico. He’s committed to Oklahoma for next year, and while that might be an obstacle in some ways, I think he’ll be signable for slot in the first three rounds. He’ll only be two months past turning 20 on draft day, so there’s still significant upside here. His mature, yet projectable, 6’5’’, 195 pound frame should be able to handle another 25 pounds of muscle, and there might be number two upside in his low 90’s arm. His fastball isn’t as elite as his teammate’s, but it’s still plus due to good life and command, and it peaks around 95. He could easily be the top JuCo arm come June.
Direct link here.
Players I wrote up were Bryce Harper, LeVon Washigton, Jake Eliopoulos, Damien Magnifico, Smith, and Tony Dischler.
Just for reference, the excerpt here and the writeups you'll see on my blog are pretty much how my writeups are going to be in the Draft Notebook. If you like what you see, pre-order the 2010 MLB Draft Notebook here.
Go ahead and vote in the poll, and tell me what other JuCo names you'd like to see written up this spring.

to make you feel less guilty I will make 2 replies in a row …
I’m kind of bummed the Indians couldn’t sign Smith. Looks like he’ll be gone before the Indians draft again in the 2nd round.

Yeah, unless John asks you to stop promoting your site, I wouldn’t worry about what anyone else thinks. I’m sure you are creating traffic (both here and on your site), I’m sure John understands, and I imagine John appreciates seeing the discussion that often follows.

How
Did Levon Washington go from being a late first round to sandwich round pick in the 2009 draft, to being a potential top ten pick in the 2010 draft, when he has yet to play more than a handful of games in 2010?
Albert Pujols is a god, and you my friend should be doing no less than gravel at his feet.

Doubts about his arm and ability to play center are disappearing.
He’s going to be a plus center fielder, whereas last year people couldn’t get a read on his arm because it was so weak.

+1
Injury concerns is what dropped him for the 2009 draft. He’s pretty much dispelled those concerns. Tampa made a HUGE mistake in not signing him last year.

Demarcus Tidwell
heard from folks out my way he is the best of a talented AZ juco crop

Smart folks you talk to.
He’s pretty much the only good hitter out there in AZ this year, as the rest of the talent is on the pitching side. Tidwell could go somewhere from round 3 to 6.

I'm getting better at this....
I recognized the name. The Cubs took him in round 16 in 2009. Didn’t get him signed. I’ll be intrigued by him.

Yeah, he's on my follow list.
I’m not sure he’ll make the draft notebook, because the vast majority of JuCo freshmen are unsignable.

Andy,
Is there any JuCo talent or any college talent playing in the Maryland area? Highschool talent? I’m looking for specific players that I could go out and see.

I have two prep prospects in my preliminary draft notebook list.
Lucky for you, they’re both in the same school. Kyle Convissar (SS) and Alex Ramsay © both go to Severna Park HS, and they’re both committed to be Terrapins. The DC area is void of prep talent this year, so I can’t help you there either.

Will they be playing for the Terps this year?
Severna Park High School is close. I should be able to see them. Are you putting video in the guide? If so, I’d be happy to take some for you.

Nah, no video.
Just plain old words. Any time you want to shoot video, though, I’ll put it up on the blog.

Oh, alright
I’ll be seeing a lot of Maryland home games this year, so I’ll see UNC, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia Tech. I’ll get some good video of those players. Guessing there is no big name on Maryland?

Nah, no big names.
A group of guys that might go in the mid- to late-teens.

Sure, here's a short list of draft-eligibles.
Eric Potter (LHP, Jr.)
Brett Harman (RHP, Jr.)
Adam Kolarek (LHP/1B, Jr.)
Those are the only notable ones right now. One of their guys, Scott Swinson, transferred out, and he would have been in the same boat.

A couple guys from last year
That got some attention but went undrafted
Justin Robey - Anne Arundel
Bryan Wilde - Cecil College
(I was under the impression that Wilde was a sophomore last year, but he still appears on the roster, as does Chad Jenkins, who was drafted in the 17th round by the Nationals)

oh man
Harper 3-6 with a walk in a DH today, 3 hits were a double, triple, moonshot HR, 4rbi’s
kid is the real deal.

yeah
I often consider all my questions about a prospect to be answered after they’ve had one good day, too.
by mrkupe on Feb 6, 2026 2:07 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Most of the damage was against a no-name pitcher from Yavapai.
The double was against a legit top ten rounds pitching prospect, but the triple and homer were against a guy that will be lucky to get drafted.

in fairness
how’s that any different to most guys in college? was pedro alvarez ‘s power based on how many hr’s he hit against pitchers that were drafted?
by MightyMoose on Feb 6, 2026 2:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it's something that's been neglected, but maybe not so anymore
When you’re drafting a guy to play in the pros, it does make an awful lot of sense to emphasize the numbers that he puts up against guys with pro caliber talent. You can slice and dice college numbers a lot of ways, but analyzing them on that basis would seem to have a lot of merit to me.
Didn’t Rich Poythress drop last year in part because he had a pretty pronounced split indicating weakness to Friday night college starters?
