Mildly curious what prospects are being discussed in AGon deal

If the Red Sox pull this off without giving up a major league player, bravo to them. Sounds like upper level talent will form the crux of the deal, so have to imagine guys like Kelly/Rizzo being in the discussion (otherwise, I really fail to see how they make an enticing enough offer without one of the two). I wonder if they can pry Iglesias away.

by toonsterwu on Dec 4, 2025 2:03 AM EST reply actions

Who's the best defensive CF in the Red Sox system?

I’d guess San Diego would be trying to acquire him.

Now would this be Fuentes? Would San Diego be willing to take the chance on Westmoreland? Would they prefer someone closer to the bigs? No idea…

by theatlfan on Dec 4, 2025 3:34 AM EST up reply actions

best defensive cf

is probably Che-Hsuan Lin. Plus range, plus arm. He might be a useful 3rd or 4th piece to a deal, but I imagine it’s going to take at least one of Rizzo or Kelly, and probably both, to get it done.

by toonsterwu on Dec 4, 2025 3:42 AM EST up reply actions

i don't see CF as a priority for them

i’m sure they are keen to give maybin a shot and will give him a long leash to prove his worth…….in that ballpark he could be a really good fit

kelly, rizzo, and iglesias is probably the package the pads are gunning for

by Wheelhouse on Dec 4, 2025 4:40 AM EST up reply actions

Well

You could have said that Tony Gwynn, Jr. was a good fit for that ballpark too.

by gatling on Dec 4, 2025 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

To $1MM or so?

I know their payroll is like $30MM (exaggeration), but you only need 25 guys.

Maybin and Gwynn are too similar in value at the same position (despite their completely different offensive ceilings/approaches) to have wasted Webb in order to save that little money. Just an opinion.

by IHateSouthBend on Dec 7, 2025 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

It wasn't just to save money

They also get to gamble on Maybin’s upside at league minimum for the next two years. A bullpen arm like Webb is definitely worth that gamble, especially when San Diego has such a deep bullpen and seems to find a reliever or two every year.

I believe Kelly is definitely in the deal

Should make my trips to San Antonio next year very interesting.

by mrkupe on Dec 4, 2025 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

Kid has good stuff but doesn't know how to locate a fastball

He threw his 92 MPH fastball too often in the zone and high as well. That was the big reason why he was hit all year.

by Bravesin07 on Dec 4, 2025 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

eh, we'll see

San Antonio is favorable to pitchers, even if the mid-summer heat (game time temperatures often in the mid-high 90s) is brutal.

Kelly/Rizzo/Fuentes

Per Gordon Edes.

A blow to the system for sure but the goal of a farm system is to help the major league team and Adrian Gonzalez is EXACTLY the type of guy you trade these prospects for. Great deal

Casey Kelly is still elite.

seems good to me too

Gets the Red Sox Gonzalez for a cheap price next year and an exclusive window to get the parameters of his big contract-to-be mapped out.

by mrkupe on Dec 4, 2025 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Am I the only one who isn’t in love with Rizzo? A nice prospect, to be sure, but I guess I just have a high standard when it comes to first basemen.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 4, 2025 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

I should add, though, you’re right about the haul — with the limited number of teams that can afford to pay Gonzalez, and the going rate for rent-a-stars in deals lately, it’s a pretty solid haul for the Padres.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 4, 2025 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

confused

Rizzo doesn’t exactly get a lot of love around these parts . . .

by mrkupe on Dec 4, 2025 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

And my recent absence from Minor League Ball rears its head…

I guess I’ve seen stuff about Rizzo’s “star potential,” and about how some like him best out of the haul the Padres are getting. And I don’t quite get it. Maybe the good folks here are more in line with my thinking.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 4, 2025 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely not alone

He’s the third best prospect in this deal.

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by jar75 on Dec 4, 2025 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

You like Fuentes that much? Kind of a lottery ticket, isn’t he? Substantial upside to be sure, but I do worry about the bat ever coming around.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 4, 2025 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

That and I'm particularly hard on 1B prospects

Both B- prospects, but I’d take Fuentes of the two.

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by jar75 on Dec 4, 2025 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

personally

I’m a believer in Rizzo, though I know a lot of folks aren’t huge fans here. Power, BB rate, approach are all excellent, K-rate looks to be improving, and he’ll be decent in the field. Plus he’s got the character thing going for him. He’s #3 for me on my list of 1b prospects. If this is the list that SD ends up getting, it’s a great return, I love Fuentes as well. Kelly I’m not super huge on, but the upside is awesome.

by PrincetonCubs on Dec 4, 2025 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

very curious who ends up the 4th prospect

I agree it’s a solid haul for San Diego … and for Boston, it’s a worthwhile trade. I don’t love Kelly and Rizzo as much as others, but still, landing a high upside arm and a potential starting first baseman is a solid return, along with a high upside piece in Fuentes. Very curious who the last piece is, though.

by toonsterwu on Dec 4, 2025 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Some were saying Vitek, and I heard Drake Britton too. Then Gammons said it wasn’t a big fourth piece, which would seem to rule out those two. Agreed though, interested to see what happens there.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 4, 2025 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Can't be Vitek...

they just drafted him. Britton would make it an outstanding haul.

by joegonzo on Dec 4, 2025 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

vitek could be as a PTBNL

But I’d be shocked if it was him. Could be another, less high-profile recent pick, though.

by mrkupe on Dec 4, 2025 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

PTBNL possibly

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by jar75 on Dec 4, 2025 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

How quickly did he sign?

Unless he signed a few days after being drafted, I don’t think he could be a PTBNL unless the deal doesn’t become official for a couple of weeks or something. A player can only be a PTBNL for 6 months, and you can’t trade a draftee until 1 year after the date he signs his contract. At least, those are the rules as I’ve always understood them.

the Red Sox are trading Casey Kelly, Jose Iglesias, Anthony Rizzo and one lesser prospect (maybe Pimental) for just Adrian Gonzalez

ghow the heck on this planet earth would the Orioles contend with David Hernandez as the ‘key piece’ to acquiring Mark Reynolds who isn’t exactly a TON less of an asset than Adrian Gonzalez (value pretty darn near one another because Reynolds has better contract)

Huh?

“for just Adrian Gonzalez”?

Gonzalez is a way better player than Reynolds. The guy hits for about 60-80 batting average points, plays great defense, and even has better power. Agone’s road numbers are insane anyone who hits 40 HR playing half their games in Petco is an absolute beast.

by King Billy Royal on Dec 4, 2025 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Reynolds isn't really that good

let me try again

Adrian Gonzalez is a great player thats what I’m saying that it will take…. Casey Kelly, Drake Britton, Anthony Rizzo, and Reymond Fuentes to get him!

thats all of Boston’s top prospects besides Iglesias, Reddick, Kalish and maybe Brentz, Renaudo (who they cannot trade)

SO how in the world could the O’s land Mark Reynolds who is a pretty darn good player in his own right (not outstanding but solid) go for just David Hernandez and other lesser?!?! O’s prospects ….!

Unfortunately,

Because this deal, if it happens, is going to be designed to solve AZ’s ‘pen needs. The local paper’s baseball writer reported that he gets a feeling the D-backs are more keen on Hernandez than Tillman. Which absolutely blows my mind.

Also

When comparing Reynolds and Adrian, you need to take into account that Adrian was signed for only one more year while Reynolds has 3 years left on his current contract (even though the last year is, I believe, an 11-million dollar team option)

Right

Reynolds ends up with 3 years and $23 million total salary if you pick up the option. Might be too much for AZ.

Tough spot for Arizona

one the one hand, he’s coming off of a bad year, and to me his true talent level is a lot better than what he showed this year (he’ll never be a high average guy, but the .190 BA was pretty flukey to me

On the other hand, having him under control for 3 more years is part of his value and the closer you get to that 11 million dollar option, the less valuable he becomes.

The good news for them is there are few good 3rd basemen out there and even less to be had via trade or FA

From MLB Trade rumors

•Chris Tillman’s name has been mentioned in connection with the Mark Reynolds trade rumors, tweets Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic thinks the D’Backs “seem to like” David Hernandez more, but Hernandez would be just one piece of what’s likely to be a pitcher-centric package (Twitter links).
•The O’s are one of three teams known to be exploring a Reynolds deal, but they’re the ones with “the heaviest interest” in the third baseman according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. The Blue Jays and Padres, in fact, “strongly deny” that they’re even pursuing Reynolds

"The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers."

by fourfingerwoo on Dec 4, 2025 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Mark Reynolds....

…is horrendous. It baffles me that people dont look at road stats for those that play in extreme hitter friendly environments. Reynolds is a horrendous baseball player.

by MetsFanX on Dec 4, 2025 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

I don't care much for Mark Reynolds

But I would point out that his road stats in 2007 (.271/.345/.477) and 2009 (.262/.343/.555) were fine. His 2008 line (.231/.305/.458) wasn’t good, but compared to his home numbers, (.248/.336/.458), there wasn’t as big a difference as there was in 2010. His road line was horrible in 2010, that’s for sure.

by toonsterwu on Dec 4, 2025 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

for 2010 maybe

It baffles me that people don’t look at all available stats and not just for the most current year!

Reynolds home/road stats were pretty bad for 2010, but for 2009 they were actually almost even.

Home: .257 / .355 / .531
Away: .262 / .343 / .555 (yup, a higher Iso away)

2008 wasn’t too different either:

Home: .248 / .336 / .458
Away: .231 / .305 / .458 (Iso again higher away than at home)

Strangely, Reynolds walks more at home and hits for less power in Arizona. Walk rate at home is lower, Iso at home is slightly higher, though only because of this past season. Up until 2010, his Iso’s home/away were pretty close (+/- 0.022 in either season). No idea what happened in 2010.

Just for fun, his Bill James Projection for 2011: .233 / .337 / .490. I don’t put a ton of weight in these, but they’re fun to look at.

James has Reynolds at a .312 BABIP in 2011 (which is higher than his .257 this past season but lower than his .338 mark in 2009, .323 in 2008, and .378 in 2007

I think obviously the injuries this year had an effect on his performance. To go from career BABIPS at .320+ to mid .250’s isn’t normal. Line drive rate of 13.3% this yea, career rate of 17.4% (including that 13.3%). Thumb injury is the likely explanation

by Jgaztambide on Dec 4, 2025 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

Came in Reynolds’ absurd weekend homer-fest at New York against the Mets, I’m shocked that MetsFanX is the one, of all people, trying to say that Mark can’t ever hit on the road.

They do it all the time

If you haven’t heard Boston management complain about the big bad Yankees, than I am not surprised you have been out of Boston for 5 years. There are lots of quotes but here is a recent qone from Theo:

Theo Epstein said during a Thursday radio appearance that the Red Sox were pushing to sign Kerry Wood at the deadline before being outbid by the Yankees. “We scouted [Wood] on rehab, we liked what we saw. He was available last minute at the deadline … and we put in what I thought was a pretty aggressive financial bid for him and we were outbid by the Yankees when they were willing to take on just a little bit more of his salary. It ended up being a great move for them and cost us.”

uhhhh

Sounds like a guy talking about what happened. I’m not seeing the complaining or the “boo hoo” like you mentioned before. He’s saying the Sox didn’t pony up the cash and the Yanks did and it was a bad move by the Sox. This is their big complaining? This is where the hostility comes from?

-1 and only member of the Nick Weglarz fan club!

by Jgaztambide on Dec 5, 2025 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

That was ONE quote

Here are some others from John Henry:

“I believe that because the two teams have been about dead-even over the past 100-plus games,” Henry wrote, "people have begun to believe that we are on an equal footing. But that has never been the case. We can compete with them better than most teams, but no one can compete with their revenues.

On the Arod trade:

“We have a spending limit,‘’ Henry said, "and the Yankees apparently don’t.’’

Here is what Boston pitcher Curt Schilling had to say on Henry’s complaining in 2004:

Was John Henry’s condemnation of the Yankees’ spending habits a classic case of the pot calling the kettle, er, red? Curt Schilling didn’t quite call the Red Sox owner a hypocrite, but intimated that Henry’s comments were out of line.

“We’re sitting on about a $130 million payroll here,” the pitching ace said yesterday, “so to (whine) and moan about somebody spending a lot of money for their team is kind of . . . .”

His voice trailed off as he thought better of finishing the thought. Schilling looked away before adding, “I don’t know if it’s the right or the wrong thing to do.”

Henry ripped the Yankees in an E-mail to reporters Wednesday, decrying George Steinbrenner’s ever-expanding payroll in the wake of the Alex Rodriguez trade. The Boss responded with a verbal volley of his own, calling Henry’s diatribe “sour grapes.”

by King Billy Royal on Dec 5, 2025 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

overreacting

First of all, I hate Schilling and wish he had never been a Red Sox (blasphemous I know, but no one in sports short of Brett Favre annoys me more). if you want to complain about Schilling, I’ll be right there next to you

Regarding the first quote, is Henry wrong? Even as the #2 payroll this past year, the Sox were around 45 million bucks behind the Yanks. That’s not insignificant. Of course, the Sox are big spenders too, but they’re not the Yanks. they CAN’T compete with their payroll. No one can. I dare you to prove different (the annual Forbes articles are always interesting reads for the business side of things)

Regarding the Arod quote: yup, he was complaining

I’m excited for the Nats because it’s cool to see them get one of the more talented FA around, but I’m also worried about how this contract could hamstring them in 4 years time…

I’m not too sure what Werth has done to justify making $18 million in any year, much less for seven years in a row. Not to mention he’ll be 38 by the time the deal is up.

And the Nats don't have a DH spot to put him in in five years

So where do they put him? First base? Yuck. There’s a legitimate chance he’s a first base platoon guy in five years (or sooner, if you really want to get pessimistic) time, with two years left on this deal. They’d pay $38MM for those two years.

It can happen with both parties mutual written consent

A trade is simply a contract entered into between two teams. If they choose, they may amend the terms of the contract. Indeed, I would not be surprised if the condition of the extension merely gave the Red Sox discretion to close or not close the deal. Apparently, the extension deadline did not matter so much to the Sox.

Can I understand what Doug Melvin is doing? Sure. I just don’t see them getting enough pitching to make a run in 2011, and they’ll lose Prince next offseason. They were, IMO, better off being a bit more patient and waiting for another window to open up.

by toonsterwu on Dec 6, 2025 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

So if this Marcum deal is a precursor to Greinke, what can us KC fans expect back for him? Some combo of Lawrie, Snider, Drabek, etc?

http://mvn.com/mlb-tossingtherosin/

by koolkerns101 on Dec 5, 2025 9:47 PM EST reply actions

seems possible

Lawrie as a Canadian would be tempting for the Jays to keep, but I’m guessing he would go to KC. Drabek would seem like a given. The Royals would probably love to have a catcher in the trade, so Arencibia fits. Probably another 2-3 pieces in there . . .if the Royals need to be blown away, that’s what it’ll take.

While I’m sure prospect watchers will love talking about the possibilities, I still don’t think that trading Greinke is really conducive to the Royals really turning it around.

by mrkupe on Dec 5, 2025 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

If I was Toronto

I would move Drabek, Lawrie, Arencibia, and a lesser prospect if I could get a window to negotiate a new deal.

Otherwise you traded Marcum and his 2 year fantastic contract + very good prospects for Greinke and his 2 year good contract. Not a good move.

Very minor deal in MLB impact

But one that someone I trust said was discussed by one party in the deal:

Alex Gordon to Atlanta for a package including Jordan Schafer and “a top minor league pitcher not named Teheran or Delgado”, per said contact…

Anyone else heard any rumbling of this?

My contact has been known to get a piece of a story and blow it up as truth WAY before anything more than initial feelers have been taken into play, and I’m curious about if anyone heard on this. I know Moore LOVED Schafer, and he has been trying to acquire him for some time, but to me Schafer fell off the face of the earth after his wrist injury last year. It doesn’t make sense to me unless the pitcher is maybe Vizcaino or Carlos Perez

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Dec 6, 2025 1:50 AM EST reply actions

Can't see this

Alex Gordon fell off the face of the earth several years ago and hasn’t recovered. At this point, Gordon is just a reclamation project. I just can’t see Wren, a guy who walked into our GM post immediately after the Teixeira trade (where we got him), as someone who’d put a “top MiL P” into a trade for a reclamation project.

Now, if the trade was Schafer straight up for Gordon then I could see it having legs. Even if we kicked in a P on the level of Todd Redmond or Scott Diamond (neither of whom we kept on the 40 man roster), then I’d still think it made sense. But if the P is actually a “real” prospect, then it seems more likely that there was just a feeler that will no longer go anywhere - we’d be giving up too much.

by theatlfan on Dec 6, 2025 2:10 AM EST up reply actions

I can see arguments against it both ways

Which is why I see the deal a little as possible…

The Royals have a guy who’s still not yet hit 27 that was considered a world beater and put up above average numbers in the majors just 3 years ago. He also put up over a 100 point OBP delta this year. Schafer’s really not swung the bat the same way since the injury (yes, the steroids thing, but steroids didn’t change his swing mechanics). On the other side, Schafer has always provided a very good center field and if he and Eibner both pan out, that allows you to absorb a Myers in right field a lot easier defensively and not mind the lesser offense than a traditional LF would give. There’s enough teams out there who’ve reportedly kicked the tires on Gordon to drive the price up to at least a solid pitching prospect, which just adds to the Royals system.

For the Braves, it gives them yet another flexibile defensive guy who could cover for Chipper’s annual time off until he retires and a guy that could be very valuable if you can get solid peak seasons out of him before he falls off (and he doesn’t free agency until 2014 and should be relatively cheap in arby unless he turns into an MVP candidate). The problem is that he’s been rumored around enough that the Royals will probably have grounds to ask for a little more than a Diamond, and I’m not sure the organization should be quick to jump on that.

Like I said, it wouldn’t seem to be a major impact deal, but it intrigued me.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Dec 6, 2025 2:29 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think the deal isn't interesting, it is

I can see why Schafer would interest the Royals (his D and a reclamation project himself with the bat) and I can see why Gordon would interest us (more or less the same).

What I just can’t see Wren parting with an actual prospect for a reclamation project. Wren is quite open about being stingy with prospects. Now, if Schafer interests the Royals, then I don’t think that’d stop Wren from making a play. But if they’re asking for Vizcaino or Perez - even Hoover or Beachy - to be included as well, then I don’t think Wren would pull the trigger. If they lower their sights to someone like Brett DeVall or Zeke Spruill, then I’d think we’d be much more likely to make the deal. I just went with Redmond or Diamond since I figured they fit the “top MiL P” quote - doesn’t mean that the guy is a prospect, he’s just done well in MiLB.

As far as the selling of Gordon, he’s struck out in more than 1/4 of his AB’s last year… and that rate has been fairly consistent for his 4 years (or parts thereof) in the bigs. Meanwhile, his BA, OBP, and SLG have all dropped over the last 3 years to the point where “useless” comes to mind now. Do you honestly believe that Wren would give someone up who’s on the cusp of the MLB for that? I can’t… but I can’t blame KC for trying.

by theatlfan on Dec 6, 2025 4:23 AM EST up reply actions

The demand for Gordon

…is much more market-driven than talent-driven. One thing I liked about this is that Gordon would HAVE to produce immediately to make this deal worth it to the Braves. They can man the outfield and 3B without relying on production from him, but if he could right the ship, there’s no one on the roster in left that would hold him out of the lineup. Many other teams I have heard interested in the reclamation of Gordon need him right away to produce. That isn’t how a reclamation works, but when the offers are out there, the team that wants to do it right might have to overpay a little bit if they truly believe they can make it work.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Dec 6, 2025 4:29 AM EST up reply actions

erm

Gordon WOULDN’T have to produce immediately to make this deal worth it to the Braves.

Way to make the entire argument counteract your original line. D’oh! LOL

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Dec 6, 2025 4:30 AM EST up reply actions

You're overstating his value

Generally, GMs don’t trade people they still have plans for to simply pick up a reclamation project - 2x true for ones without options left. Otherwise they’d be left with egg on their face when they lose recently acquired players for nothing (i.e., Andrew Miller). No GM wants to make a trade where they were obviously taken and when the other team has high production regular when you didn’t even get a good AB from your guy… and there’s no way Wren would take that chance on guys that he considers part of the Braves’ future.

by theatlfan on Dec 8, 2025 1:05 AM EST up reply actions

I could see a

Beachy and Schafer for Gordon and Jeff Bianchi working out.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Dec 7, 2025 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

Seems like a decent deal

I personally wouldn’t do it, but it’s more superstition on my part. Just seems that when players start going down on a team then it happens in bunches and the entire team is adversely affected. Having too many guys with the “injury bug” means that you’re more likely to encounter this issue over the course of a season.

Still, it’s a decent deal.

by theatlfan on Dec 8, 2025 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

I could see this possibly happening in some form

I’d guess the pitcher is a low-ceiling arm who can take innings in short order, maybe Brandon Beachy or perhaps J.J. Hoover.

by mrkupe on Dec 6, 2025 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

To me

That would be a great deal for both sides. I’ve heard a lot of interest around the league in attempting to “remake” Gordon, so I worry a bit that the bidding could ask a higher guy than a Beachy or Hoover. I think if the Royals move Greinke for something like Lawrie/Snider/catching prospect rather than Lawrie/Drabek/prospect, Beachy could be a solid back-end guy for them as their studs develop.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Dec 6, 2025 2:31 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, a lot of moving pieces

It’s hard to see why KC would make this deal on the surface if it is strictly Gordon for Schaefer and a low level arm. KC has Blanco and Dyson (who they are high on) set to battle it out for CF next year, so adding Schaefer to the mix doesn’t seem to help much and creates a hole at LF (after losing DeJesus at RF).

But if a Greinke trade goes through that would put Snider in LF, then that definitely changes things.
