Fantasy Trade Question...looking for advice!!
Hey all, i know a lot of us dont like to answer fantasy related questions, but any advice would be appreciated...anyway, i play in a head to head keeper dynasty league where we can keep the players for as long as we want...I own Broxton and Nathan as my closers but might trade Broxton for Cain (a no brainer to me)...I would then need to make a deal for another closer, since we need to start 2 RP's every week...My options are:
1. I give Justin Smoak and Michael Taylor for Heath Bell...my thoughts: giving up 2 potential starts for a closer in fantasy isnt the smartest move, yet i would be giving up 2 people that wouldnt help me win the championship this year (and i own Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard so Smaok has no where to play)
2. I give E. Jackson, G. Soto, Aaron Hicks for D. Aardsma and Todd Frazier...my thoughts: I hate giving up on E. Jax but i think i have the SP depth to make up for that loss (especially if i go and get Cain-i would have Cain, Halliday, Gallardo, Ubaldo, Wandy as my main horses), and I am very frustrated with Soto but have Posada for this year, and as much as i like Hicks, he is like 4 years from a fantasy impact.
3. I give Beltran and Chris Tillman for R. Franklin...my thoughts: Franklin to me, although old (for baseball standards), is on the best team and has been outstanding...but is giving up a potential top 10 OF next year, when healthy, and a guy like Tillman too much for Franklin (who isnt guaranteed a job next year-i dont think)...
Again, any advice would be helpful...thanks

These are pretty bad offers. Closers are a premium in keeper leagues, but that’s just ridiculous. you might want to offer Jackson for Aardsma straight up or Tillman for Franklin straight up since you’ve got good pitching depth…

the thing is
saves are worth just as much as wins, so closers are pretty valuable…in our league, aardsma is like the 4th highest scoring RP (and has almost as many, if not more overall points than E. Jax) and Bell is right up there too

These are all horrible deals
come on man. I don’t care how much saves are worth. You don’t need 3 darn closers! You punt like 5 categories to pick up one. I was looking at the trade, trying to see if I could find one that was maybe not vetoable. I couldn’t find one…

it is a points league
not roto…played head to head…so all that matters is the points for the day that that closer gets (a save is 10 ponts, just like a win…a k is 1.5 points etc)…there is no punting categories…and i would only be taking 1 of those deals, which would leave me with 2 closers since i am going to trade Broxton for Cain

These deals are all terrible
None are even close.
Jackson, Soto and Hicks for Aardsma and Frazier? Good lord.

Those trade are terrible ideas
Dont do any of them. You will sorely regret it.

Agree with the others....
all the trades where you are getting a closer are awful. How is it that you are only getting Cain for Broxton, but you have to give up so much to get a replacement closer? I am thinking you would be better off just keeping your team how it is, rather than making one move to improve your team (Brox for Cain) but then making another trade that hurts your team (all of the above deals) .

Here are the facts about closers …
- About 15 of 30 closers each year may not be the closer the following year.
- About 7-8 gain/loss there job in the middle of the season
- An awful closer still gets you 20-25 saves
The best advice I can give you is don’t ever reach for a closer. You already have broxton, You don’t neccesarily need another premier guy there to compete in the saves department. If your getting Cain in a deal, then look to trade Jackson for a closer .. shop around and see what you can get just for him .. and what ever the best offer is pertaining to a stable closer with alittle job security ..take it.

my thoughts
I wouldn’t trade any of those players away for saves. I would pick up League or Adams and just use them for a few K’s a week. They’d be good investments since they both could and should be closers in time.

I have a rather simple philsopohy on closers
Why not just go after the best available players, and not the players with the best position? Closers come and go and are therefore a huge year to year wildcard, unless you are talking Nathan or Mariano

yes i agree
i know you shouldnt pay for saves, and i dont…like i said, i traded broxton, so now i need a closer and the only closer sitting on the wire right now is capps (who sucks and doesnt get any opps)…so these are the best available options and the cost to me

thanks for all the help
i ended up doing E. Jackson for R. Franklin…I know it is a lot considering it is a keeper league, but i needed a closer, i can live without Jackson and that is the going price for closers in our league

way to give up a legit #2 starter for a guy who has never closed before this year.
You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

thanks
i did what i had to do to win for this year…i have enough SP depth to not miss jackson (halliday, gallardo, cain, ubaldo, wandy, zambrano) but i needed a closer

That's really not great SP depth
Youre going to regret this one.

Cain/Franklin for EJax/Broxton?
That was the trade you made? Seems like a slightly poor trade for me. Your best hope is that you “sold high” on EJax and turns back into a pumpkin next year.

i also think
i sold high on Broxton considering how poor he has been pitching of late and his toe problems…
by miraclemets on Aug 17, 2025 2:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really?
He’s young and one of the best relief arms in the game. RPs are unreliable, but if you asked me which young RPs I would want on my team Broxton would be near the top of the list. He’s also on a team that’s a consistent contender.
IMO:
-Youve downgraded by going from Broxton to Franklin - both this year and strongly in the future.
-Youve moved laterally swapping Jackson for Cain - both this year and in the future.
Overall, the trade made your team slightly worse. It wont kill you, and with random variation and luck it probably wont have much of an effect at all… but I still say you should have stood pat.
