My Reactions To Laws Top 100

These are my first reactions to reading Law's list:

Martin Perez at #7? I love his upside but do you think he deserves to be that high? Law has Perez over Matusz and Feliz and was the first sign that he seemed to rank a lot based on upside.

Interested to see what people think of Brett Wallace at #20. Is his bat that good?

Matzek at #22? A little high for a highschool arm, no? Even more puzzling to me was that he was 58 spots ahead of Turner. I am not that familiar with these two guys but isnt Turner supposedly the guy with more upside? he signed for a larger bonus if I remember correctly.

Zach Britton at #25. As a huge Orioles fan, I was surprised but happy to see Britton this high on a list. But I do think a lot of guys behind him on the list deserve to be above him including Bumgarner and Friedrich. Britton is 50 spots above Mike Montgomery? What?

Carlos Triunfel at #44? I dont know much about him.

Anthony Rizzo at #53. I dont know much about him either but I was surprised to see him ahead of Lars.

Alcides Escobar at #54? I guess law does not think he will hit much.

Josh Bell at #61? Why is Rizzo ahead of him? Why is Freeman behind Bell?

Fernando Martinez at #73? Seems a bit low to me.

Matt Moore at #81? Seems like a lot of people are hesitant to rank Moore very high (Frankie Piliere)

Star-divide

Those were my first reactions on this but I am sure there are other head scratchers on here. I am not neccisarily questioning my opinion above, but just the general flow of the lists I have been seeing lately. What do you agree/disagree with?

I am sure the "other" option is going to get a lot of votes in the poll but I couldnt fit everyone on!

Matzek got the higher bonus, I believe...

…and was definitely considered to be a bit better than Turner from what I recall.

Freeman belongs behind Bell IMO.

Freeman

I think he’s another guy who’s falling fast that I don’t quite understand. Here’s a guy who put up a 900 OPS in the SAL as an 18 year old, and then hit very solidly in the CAR league before ending up in AA as a 19 year old. Yeah, his power fell off last year, but he did have injury issues. He’s got a plus hit tool, showed good power in 2008 (.205 IsoP, outdoing even Jason Heyward), has a decent walk rate, and plays solid defense. He’s supposedly a baseball junkie with a great work ethic. Is his injury issue from last year really knocking him down this much?

I think it is positional

How many first baseman can you have in the top 50? Freeman’s good, but he’s not one of the top 4 first base prospects, and how valuable can the 6th or 7th best first base prospect be? As it is, I think that Law’s list is heavy on first base.

So I don’t see Freeman as falling - he just isn’t pushing himself up into consideration for the top 50, which considering the other talent as his position seems right to me.

A scout I heard ...

… at an Arizona Fall League meeting said flat out that he’d been watching Freeman and “I just don’t see it”. He talked about his swing as too “long and stiff” … which might be good for some things, but definitely not a baseball swing. I already own Freeman on my fantasy minor league team, but I’m really thinking about including him in a trade while his perceived value is still high. If I DO trade him I can almost guarantee he’ll become a super star!

That scout doesn't know what he's talking about.

But maybe Freeman was fatigued and his swing was off

Both from the AFL this year…….his swing looks great to me.

Im not a fan...

Off my top 100 (but not too far off).

What I see in his swing is:

-a little bit of a hitch, instead of a smooth path to the strikezone
-a swing path that doesnt stay in the strike zone all that long
-a little bit of two planes to his swing, with a bit of an uppercut at the end.
-a line drive plane more than a power plane
-not a whole lot of bat speed
-weight stays back, not much of a step…

This isnt a swing I like that much. I dont hate it… and he doesnt do anything really badly… but every time I watch video I come away distinctly unimpressed. Looks like a swing of a guy that will hit for a high AVG with some power… but not the swing of a good 1B.

I think Kevin Goldstein nailed it with his “perfect world projection” for Freeman. Not really a top 100 for me, but his plus defense and the sure thing aspects of what he does do well keep him fairly high.

Perfect World Projection: He’ll be a good everyday first baseman, but with secondary skills below average for the position. He’s not an impact player.

I said it before, but i’ll say it again: I would take Anthony Rizzo and many other lower profile 1B prospects over Freeman in a heartbeat. I just dont see Freeman becoming anything other than an average 1B, and even that isnt a sure thing.

Matt Sweeney

hopefully his bat will end up playing well in the upper levels and other leagues but his ranking seems a bit high.

His explanation for Fernando

Was that he felt he could have easily justified putting him even 50 spots higher on offensive potential alone, but that he’s really worried injuries are beginning to stunt his development. He still loves his upside though. I can buy that, even if I don’t agree it should hurt him quite so much.

I can understand the thought of injuries stunting development...

But F-Mart still OPS’d .875 in 45 games. The kid knows how to hit with power, and now its just a matter of showing he can get on base at a better rate than .330. F-Mart’s still only 21 and should be the Mets new starting LF/RF in 2011.

Alvarez

Voted for Alvarez, seems 20-30 spots lower than most of the other analysts out there. PP pushed him out of their top 10 but still in the top 15 I imagine which is the lowest I’ve seen. 35 is still pretty high so I can see arguments for others.

I probably would have voted for Turner if he were on there. Don’t really have a huge problem with Matzek at 22 but the difference between the 2 rankings is too great in my opinion.

Rizzo and Wallace are both probably 20-25 spots too high, Sweeney wouldn’t make my list but he is still a good bat.

Re: Alvarez

Klaw had him at 38 last year without ever playing a lick of pro ball. Then he moves him up 3 spots after the first year he had??? In a sense he graded him lower because of all the big names that graduated from the 09 list. I’m a pretty big Klaw apologist, but this is an obvious sign of stubbornness.

by Kerm on Jan 30, 2026 12:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Klaw's really weighing Alvarez's first 66 games...

.. and ignoring the next 60 played in a higher level (AA) where Alvarez destroyed pitching to a tune of +1 OPS. Its not like his A ball numbers were even that bad! Not sure what Klaw was thinking …

Alvarez is going to play 3B for the Pirates at some point in 2011, and he could be there for awhile. Nothing i’ve read tells me Alvarez is a butcher at 3B.

alvarez

the thing with alvarez is that law downgrades prospects a lot when he doesnt think they have very good bodies or are that athletic…Law seems certain that he will move to 1b.

by miraclemets on Jan 30, 2026 9:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I also think Alvarez ends up at first

The thing is though, I think his bat plays well there and I have him a spot or two behind Smoak. I just don’t see how guys like Hosmer (he’s who I voted for here, he isn’t even close to making my top 100) and Wallace can be ranked ahead of him.

I voted Matzek

Although Alvarez is probably the more mystifying placement (or Chris Carter).

I don’t get how you can put an unproven HS arm that high (as well as Shelby Miller)..and if you do…then why not Jacob Turner as well?

Matzek

I have no problem with that ranking, but I’m a huge Matzek fan. I absolutely agree that Turner should be higher though
