Prospect Smackdown: Brian Matusz vs Neftali Felix
Brian Matusz (Born 1987) - Stats
Neftali Feliz (Born in 1988) - Stats
Who will be the better MLB pitcher?
I am stuck on this. Matusz has a really nice set of pitches and excellent command. He just knows how to pitch. Feliz dominated in relief with Texas but can he start? You have to love his fastball.
I am guessing the general feeling is that Feliz has more upside but Matusz has a higher floor. So who is the better prospect?

Hmm
I say Matusz based on his floor being higher.

Matusz...
is the better prospect right now, but Feliz could be better because of his fastball.

I suspect Feliz will remain in the pen
Which makes this rather obvious.
by James F on Dec 26, 2025 12:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I severely doubt this
I believe that the only reason that Feliz will pitch out of the pen this yr is to monitor his innings. According to Jon Daniels he is one of the starting rotation candidates this spring. The Rangers seem acutely aware of the value of Feliz in the rotation.

Yeah, I don't buy it
This is hardly the first time this has happened with a hard-throwing right-handed with underdeveloped secondary pitches. Should the Rangers attempt to repeat the development path of Brandon Morrow and Joba Chamberlin, I anticipate a similar result.

Morrow was actually much better as a starter

Fifteen career starts
Which isn’t much of a sample size. But the numbers suggest the opposite. He has given up more home runs in 15 starts than in over one hundred relief appearances. He strikes out two fewer batters per nine as a starter, while giving up more BB/9. He allows a higher opposing batting average as a starter as well, despite having a lower BABIP as a starter than in relief.

ERA is better tho, thats all I saw

Don't forget that both Pedro Martinez and Johann Santana also started in the pen...
Just because 2 other top prospects didn’t develop well doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

Matsuz on account of gross mishandling
There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with Feliz staying in the pen without even being given a chance in the rotation.
I’ll reconsider my vote if Feliz is moved back to the rotation. But right now, it has to be Matsuz.

Feliz at his best > Matusz at his best
but I think Matusz will have a steadier, more lineal career. If you ask me to take one, Im taking Feliz, though. Its really close. They’re #2 and 3 behind Strasburg for me.

+1
Couldn’t have been said clearer or more accurately.

Yea...
I completely agree with how you said it too.

I think this one is actually pretty easy
Not only would I take Matusz for his floor, but I’d also take him for his upside. Feliz might throw harder, but Matusz is just plain better in just about every other area of the game.

Matusz is the better prospect IMO
But Feliz is a starter. He was made a reliever in order to contribute at the ML level ASAP, and he handled the duty spectacularly. He’s never been anything but a starter, though, and usually takes at least an inning to get his velocity up to its optimal level. The fastball and breaking ball are absolutely there, he induces soft contact against everyone he pitches to, and his command is better than advertised. The changeup has a lot of movement, and if he can refine it could be a definite plus pitch. He’s absolutely a starter.

Classic safe vs. star
And I’ve argued for Matusz for a long while now. So “safe” isn’t a knock. I’d let someone toss a coin and I’ll take the loser. I think Feliz is the better prospect, but I can’t say I’d choose him over a safer prospect like Matusz…

smart pitchers with a good arsenal are underrated
Everyone looks at the fastball, at the potential. But Matusz already has it all there, you have to go with the finished product. I hate the Greg Maddux/Tom Glavine comps since it tends to get used for guys with more underwhelming stuff (many posters used to use this comp for Jeremy Sowers) but the difference is Matusz has multiple plus offerings with sharp command. He’s no junk thrower, and I really doubt Feliz will be able to harness his fastball or secondary offerings to the point that he will outproduce Matusz.

potential
People measure potential too much by just looking at FB velocity and breaking ball potential. Really whose to say Matusz at his top potential controlling all his 4 pitches isn’t just as good as Feliz controlling his 2 pitches even if they are better overall. Matusz has more room to work with if you ask me and isn’t pinned down if one of his pitches isn’t going well for him.

RP's making good as starters
Who are examples of guys who have spent first couple years in the pen and then made it as dominate starter.. I say this as I assume Feliz pitches all of 2010 in the pen… Justin Duchscher comes to mind but who else am I forgeting?
by novaoakland on Dec 27, 2025 8:08 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He won't
Feliz will probably pitch a month or two in the pen, then transition into the rotation. He’ll probably pitch about 160 innings next year.

Greinke went to the pen for 3 months in ’07 and has been dominant as a starter ever since that September.

Plenty of managers in the 60s and 70s believed in starting pitchers in the pen.
