Brian Matusz vs. Chris Tillman
Which pitcher will be better in 2010? Which pitcher will be better for the future?
I would go with Brian Matusz for both. He has all of the makings of an ace with 4 above average pitches including two plus plus pitches and plus command. Although I do not think Tillman is that far behind I would still take Matusz right now. Tillman has that plus fastball and curve, if he can develop that changeup a bit more I think he may be able to be similar to Matusz.
So what do you think?

Super close now
Id give the slightest of edges to Tillman on upside.
Also, Tillman was the product of a Bill Bavasi trade… so that’s like… an instant ticket to stardom.

Lets see, next year, Matusz gets the nod IMO. Over the long haul it gets a bit more difficult. Both have good stuff, Tillman with improved command will have no pitch that isn’t atleast “plus”. The changeup IMO is a very good pitch, excellent MPH diff, excellent movemement, just needs to be commanded better. In the last year he made more strides with that pitch than I could have ever imagined. Tillman does have the better upside, and I can see a good upside comp of Greinke, but the command HAS to come around. If not, he is a mid rotation SP at best. And so folks realize his command improving isn’t just a shot in the dark, if you look, his control has improved since coming to the O’s organization. If he improves his overall game to a similar extent in 2010 as he did in 09, then I confidently will say Tillman will be better than Matusz as soon as 2011. But as mentioned, hands down, Matusz will be better in 09.
Tillman projects to have a plus FB, plus-plus CB and a plus CH
Matusz projects to have an above average FB, fringe plus-plus curve, plus-plus CH, and above average slider.
Also, Tillman looks to have a smoother delivery and provides less injury risk, while Matusz doesn’t pose any red flags, his delivery is not as smooth as Tillman’s……

Matusz
For the same reason as you Ravensfan, deep repertoire with some plus pitches and plus command. I saw him pitch at USD his junior year and he looked outstanding.
This is like Mulder vs. Hudson, though. I’m not saying those are the comparables but it’s pick your all star. I’m happy for the Orioles that they have these two kids plus Wieters.

Matusz
Tillman may have a better career year, but I think Matusz will have a better career overall and a better 2009.

I like your wording, and am inclined to agree, but with Tillman still so far away from being fully developed, I am kinda stuck between the 2. If he continues to develop similarly for the next 2 years, he will be the better pitcher IMO. Really, the missing link for Tillman is command as mentioned above. He improved his control in 09 tremendously, now he just needs to hone his command similarly. It will be interesting seeing a fresh Chris Tillman in 2010 with the O’s rather than a fatigued Chris Tillman.
It also was quite interesting in Roch’s blog yesterday that Chris is trying to build some muscle mass so he will be able to last the entire year next season. The fact that he is still so skinny, it makes me dream that he still hasn’t filled into his frame yet, and when he finally does, that FB velocity will rise some. It isn’t like he has already filled into his projectable frame since being drafted and we are just hoping and dreaming he starts throwing harder. He truely has not filled in yet. If he starts sitting 93-96 MPH with his fastball, and touching higher, we are talking about a devastating pitcher
