Discussion Question for Wednesday

I've got some time crunch problems Wednesday, so here is a discussion question to keep you busy.

If you were the Rays, what, if anything, would you do with David Price on September 1st?

Would you leave him in the minors, keep the stress off the elbow and shut him down once the minor league season ends?

Would you promote him to the majors and use him in the bullpen for the stretch run?

Would you promote him to the majors and use him as a starter for the stretch run?

The problem with putting him in the rotation is that none of their major league starters have done anything to merit being removed from the rotation. So the next best thing is to ease him into the majors via the bullpen. Down the road, you could see Edwin Jackson closing for them. He’s got the fastball/slider to do it.

I don’t see how jackson profiles as a closer. Look at his K/BB ratios. A closer that doesn’t strike anyone out and walks a lot of guys doesn’t close for very long.

Jackson’s stength would be his durability and his ability to take the ball every 5 days. He can fill in the backend of your rotation and give you quality innings.

you're half right

jackson still hasn’t figured out the best way to leverage his tremendous stuff into results, but he’s only 24, and if he ever does figure it out, he;s a lot more valuable as a starter than a reliever.

i don’t think there’s a wrong way to use jackson right now. he’s having success as a starter, and if he could log 195 innings, that’d be a huge boon to his value short term, but if he;’s moved to the bullpen and while there, figures out how to strike guys out again, that could help him turn the corner from innings eater to ace.

re

I would think the potentially more reliable and dynamic option would be to close McGee and use Jackson as your #5 at the end of a very deep rotation, or use him as trade bait at the end of the year

McGee is very far away

Isn’t John talking about this month, not 2010?

re

i dont think jackson will be moved to closer this year, so i had the understanding that this was in the future

One suggestion

I’ve seen made more than once is to go to a 6-man rotation in September, that way the top guys are rested for the playoffs.

I see McGee closing.

Id put Sonnanstie at long-relief.

When will McGee even be ready for the majors?

He’ll start pitching again at the end of 2009, right? Considering he was only in AA when he just hurt, it’s hard to believe that they’ll bring him up before at least the end of 2010.

Promote him to the rotation

Price has not pitch alot this season (due to injuries) so it’s not like the Rays would be on the cusp of wearing him down. The only question becomes who you take out, but that question will need to be faced at sometime. Why not answer it now?

He's recently said in an interview

with a Rays blog that he expects to be called up this season and he expects to be used primarily as a reliever. He’ll also almost certainly be called up before September 1st so that he’s can be on the playoff roster.

yes

If the Rays will call him up to use out of the bullpen to help them get to the playoffs, they might as well have him up before september 1st… I agree.

yep

before September 1st so he can be on the playoff roster or he won’t be up at all.

Go Pirates!!!

re

I don’t see how you could keep him in the minors when the Rays have a chance to dethrone the RedSox/Yankees. There is no guarentee that the Rays will ever be in this position again, so shutting him down completely would be foolish.

Keep him on extreme pitch counts like the Yanks did with Joba last year and next year he moves in the rotation

by ScottAZ on Aug 13, 2025 12:41 PM EDT   0 recs

Response

My answer is that the Rays will likely keep Price right where he is on September 1st . . .the major league roster.

He’ll be promoted to pitch out of the pen, probably just before the end of the month. Could see him having a similar role to the one being played by Jeff Samardzija on the Cubs. A guy to provide a boost in key situations with the ability to go a couple of innings at a time. He might end up on the postseason roster but I think it’s a little early to suggest that it’s a lock. Need to see how his arm is feeling at the end of the year, and most of all need to see how effective he is. The numbers and the stuff say he should handle his own and then some out of a major league pen at this point, but as we should never forget, MLB is hard.

by mrkupe on Aug 13, 2025 3:26 PM EDT   0 recs

Nah

I say rest his arm the rest of the year. I don’t like moving young kids form the rotation to the bullpen or vise versa in the same season, especially if he’s called up before September 1st; way to many innings if he pitched into the playoffs. Tampa is obviously in a good situation to win, and with what they have now and what they have coming up, I wouldn’t put it all on the line this season.

by Flasportsfan88 on Aug 14, 2025 7:36 AM EDT   0 recs

He's only pitched 96 innings this year

he pitched close to 200 last year, and probably close to that each of the few prior years between regular season, college world series, and Team USA play. I don’t think the inning count will hurt him much.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

He'll be up before Sept. 1, but not much before.

I’ll bet he makes at least a few starts in AAA, partially since his first one was good but not light’s out.

He’s obviously the next guy in line for a rotation spot if any Ray needs to skip their turn in the rotation in the next two weeks. I could see him getting 3-4 starts in Durham and then being promoted Aug. 28-31, somewhere in there.

I don’t see that they need him staffwise- strong rotation-strong pen

I’d be more worried about offense

by ribman on Aug 16, 2025 6:02 PM EDT   0 recs

hey rays fan here

i have the feeling that david price is going to be up sometime before sept 1st so that he can be eligible for the post season roster (if there is one), the only 2 spots in the bullpen for the rays that arent all that good are trevor miller, who isnt all that bad but price is a better option that him and jason hammel, he isnt bad, but they dont use him all that much. next year he will be in the rotation as edwin jackson will most likely be traded and sonnanstine might get moved to the pen next year and replaced in the rotation with wade davis who is the rays second best pitching prospect behind david price

Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Gabe Gross= clutch.
