Discussion Topic: 2008 Twins draft
A discussion topic to keep you busy until I get back.
If you were the Twins, what players are going to interest you in the draft this year? Assuming that all the elite guys (Crow, the Beckhams, Smoak, etc) are gone by the time you pick at 14, who are your targets for consideration? You got extra picks this year at 27 and in the supplemental round at 31. What are you looking for?
I will weigh in with my own opinion about what I will do in the Shadow draft soon.

Twins
The Twins desperately need hitting prospects, so I'd lean in that direction. It isn't impossible that Gordon Beckham would still be on the board, and if he is, they'd have to take him. They have no middle infield prospects in their system aside from some long term projectables (Deibinson Romero may be the best of them), and Beckham would instantly be their best hitting prospect.
If he's gone, I'd have no problem with them chasing a 1b masher in the mold of Smoak, Alonso, Hosmer, or Wallace with the idea of turning that guy into a corner OFer or DH type. They just need a bat somewhere. Unless a stud starting pitcher slips unexpectedly, I'd have to take one of the above listed bats...

Beckham
is rumored to go in the top 6 as of right. No way he gets outside of top 10

Gordon?
Tim Beckham is top 6. I don't think Gordon is.
A couple months back, he really wasn't in the top 30.
He's having a good season though, so I think he may end up top 20.

gordon beckham
back in early february baseball america had him ranked #24, so i don't think saying he wasn't in the top 30 is really accurate. also, he is a lock top 20 pick and is probably a top 10 pick at this point.

RE
general consensus he is a top 15. No way he gets by Oakland and the Cardinals if you look at the players they like to draft.

Weeks
How about Jamile Weeks?
Flip him to 2B or slot Casilla in there.

twins
unless alonso falls, i think the best player available is going to be a pitcher at 14. if i were them i would be looking at the high school arms like alex meyer and ethan martin. both have legit front of the rotation stuff, and the twins could use a pitcher with that kind of potential.
at 27 i really like brett devall, but the twins need bats and since i already took a pitcher at 14 i am looking for some sluggers. i'm really hoping brett wallace falls b/c he is a big time bat with a ton of polish. if not, i am going for havens or gillaspie to give me a legit 3rd base prospect.
at 31 you are really looking at the same group of players. obviously if any of the guys from the first group fall i am looking at them as well david cooper and ike davis. i also really like daniel webb, but it would be nice to get some bats. this could also be a place you see isaac galloway go.

Twins
In my mock 1st round: http://21nunder.wordpress.com/category/draft/
I have the Twins getting a college hitter like Dennis Raben at 14. I could see that Alsonso would fall, which they would love.
I like Jemile Weeks for them as well there.
At 27, a college pitcher might be Tyson Ross, and another college hitter is Allen Dykstra from Wake Forest.

dykstra
don't really like dykstra that much. he just hasn't ever hit for much of an average, and his power numbers aren't even that great this year. i would much rather get someone like david cooper or ike davis if brett wallace is gone.

Raben...
Hands down the best fit for the twins at 14
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Gordon
Gordon at 14
Weeks at 27
Danks at 30
Kick it in the nuts and watch those three rip there way through the minors.

RE
you are being too ambitious there. Danks is the only one who projects by any measure to be there at where u are slotting him to go.
Beckham will def. be gone, Weeks a very good chance

re
I think they could take Danks or Tyson Ross if they're feeling college products, but they'll probably take high-schoolers, ie Galloway or Melville, whoever's looking the best by the end of the high-school season.

outfielders
i don't really think they are going to take outfielders early. after acquiring young and gomez this off-season i think they are pretty well set in the outfield for a while.

That's reasonable but Cuddyer isn't the greatest outfielder by any means. If Beckham or Weeks falls to them I could see that happening, probably more likely Weeks. Still, they've taken to high upside high schoolers and there really aren't any infielders within their price range that fall into that category. Of course they could take a pitcher or maybe reach for the most affordable, but that would kind of be a turn off to the fans. Wouldn't put it past them though.

Weeks
Makes alot of sense for them.
They have their share of fast, speedy OF (do not forgot Reveere)
If they do take one, I think it would be a power hitting on like Raben.

Don't draft on need
Actually, the Twins have a pretty balanced system right now, except at the upper levels. And who cares about the upper levels when the roster is set except on the left side for the next four years, barring significant injury?
Normally I would say just take the best player available, and this year more than ever. And unlike past years, the Twins have a lot of room in the budget to sign whomever they draft. Last year, they had a budget of $3 million total. Most teams spent more in the first round than the Twins spent in the entire draft. This year, their budget for draftees and international signings is more like $12 million. I expect them to spend that.

wow
it would be something if they spend 12 mi on th draft. where did you hear/read that?
that would def. change some projections lol

They'll spend
The Twins will spend, much like 2004 when they had like 6 picks in first round they spent damn near 8 million dollars on that draft class. That was after Hawkins, Eddie G and others had left.
With Hunter, Santana, Silva all gone they'll have some cash to burn which hopefully they'll use in the draft.

Budget
The Twins’ budget this year is $75 million. They are on the hook for $59 million for salaries. So they have $16 million in reserve. Bill Smith said he intends to spend it all. “Use it or lose it” were his words. I expect he’ll save some money in case the Twins are buying at the break. But $12 million is conservative.
Last year, the Twins’ budget was $72 million. They paid out $72.5 million in player salaries. Everything they did for drafting and signing put them over budget, which is one reason they trade Castillo at the break.

Don't Sleep on
David Cooper from Cal. He is proving himself in a deep college 1B class and is out performing most of his counterparts to this point. He isn’t as high profile as the others but check his line for yourself.

Twins Needs
The Twins needs can’t be ignored, especially when you figure the overall draft strategy. At 14, the elite do figure to be picked over so the Twins could focus on need, especially when their needs are so broad based and urgent.
The Twins needs are SS, 2B, 3B and OF/DH (when Cuddyer moves on with the possibility of Kubel moving to the OF). Of course they need top of the rotation talent as all teams do. IMO They also need a leadoff man and RHB’s. They need help soon so college players would be given first consideration.
I like Jemile Weeks. He seems like a safe pick with relatively high ceiling. I think he would advance quickly. I like his character, work ethic, athletism, and outstanding production, including power. He might be a reach at #14.
What do you think of Weeks outperforming Alonso in every category except BB rates?
If Weeks is too much of a reach at #14, I would consider a SP. Shooter Hunt appeared to be elite until he lost command of his FB the last 5-6 starts. What do you think of Hunt? I don’t think Christian Friedrich has the FB or the command
Besides striking out Hosmer, does Ethan Martin figure to be a better SP or 3B?
14 seems rich for Bubba Meyer unless he breaks through with better weather.I like Reese Havens, but with his lack of range he’s limited to one position (3B) which magnifies his risk and minimizes his relative offensive value. I’m concerned that he hit 5 of his HR’s the first week. Where does he currently rank?
I like Ike Davis, especially because he can reportedly play RF, but I’m concerned about his park factor (118). I would love to see a smackdown between Davis, Raben, Koeshnick, and Thames. Where do Davis and Thames rank?
What do you think of this:
1-#14 Jemile Weeks
1-#27 high ceiling prep SP
1-#31 Reese Havens
2-#60 David Cooper
3-#92 Eric Thames
4-#126 Logan Forsythe
by lonestar on Apr 15, 2025 1:52 PM EDT 0 recs
Martin
I have read teams prefer Martin as a pitcher. His ceiling is considerable.
Havens could go 30th to the Red Sox since they love him. If Brett Wallace can play 3B, he would be a good fit for the Twins.

I'd go with
