Top 185 prospects - late June edition

I figured I'd do one more of these. Comparing rankings to previous lists I did earlier this year just seemed too daunting, so I contented myself with blurbs for each player. I will also admit up-front that (1) I tend to be swayed by small sample sizes, (2) I've surely forgotten some worthy prospects, and (3) some of these blurbs and rankings are probably a bit dated. Well, they'll certainly look dated in another month! Therefore (4) this is just a snapshot and I have no intention of defending rankings once the list becomes outdated (which happens immediately after it's been posted). Also, (5) I have no idea where to put all the amateurs, so I just plopped them where I chose. Your mileage may vary. And of course, (6) this list would look much different (and much better) if I had access to more scouting reports or if I could get to more than one minor league stadium during the year.

Enjoy!

65 FV
1. Lucas Giolito, rhsp - It looks like his early season struggles were merely due to the Nationals tinkering with his mechanics.
2. Yoan Moncada, 2b - Elite bat, doing everything one could hope for this year.
3. J.P. Crawford, ss - Stance has changed this year, hard to gauge hit tool changes if any, but still an elite prospect.
4. Joey Gallo, 3b - Ridiculous profile, could be All-Star even if relegated to first base.
5. Tyler Glasnow, rhsp - Has made strides with changeup this year.

60 FV
6. Dansby Swanson, ss - Production tailed off after promotion to Double-A but should still be a first-division regular for years to come.
7. Alex Reyes, rhsp - Front-of-the-rotation upside, but remains his own worst enemy.
8. Alex Bregman, ss - Scouts are repeatedly saying that the major power uptick is real; he could be a bit low here.
9. Brendan Rodgers, ss - Enormous ceiling, glowing scouting reports trump concerns about Asheville inflated numbers.
10. Victor Robles, cf - Dominating in High-A now.
11. Trea Turner, ss - Arguably the safest prospect here; will almost certainly be a first-division regular, only lack of power keeps him from being higher.
12. Jose De Leon, rhsp - Picking up right where he left off last year.
13. Josh Hader, lhsp - Front-line starter potential, still overlooked due to weird profile and bullpen risk.
14. Andrew Benintendi, cf - Bat coming alive in Double-A, outstanding hit tool.
15. Orlando Arcia, ss - Batting line isn't outstanding but tools are good across the board; another first-division regular at shortstop.
16. Ozzie Albies, ss - Looking like he may be the second baseman in Atlanta next year, bat waking up in Triple-A, enormous talent.
17. Austin Meadows, cf - Strong bat, nowhere to play.
18. Clint Frazier, rf - Fewer strikeouts, game power showing up.
19. Anderson Espinoza, rhsp - Some bumps, but he remains a front-of-the-rotation candidate.
20. Amed Rosario, ss - Might be too aggressive, but reports suggest major developmental improvements across the board.
21. Jose Berrios, rhsp - Sporadic control issues have been a surprise, upside remains high.

55 FV
22. Jorge Mateo, 2b - Major slump doesn't change tools; has sneaky game power to go with elite speed.
23. David Dahl, cf - Still clobbering the ball.
24. Gleyber Torres, ss - Strong reports even during start-of-season slump; naysayers (like me) few and far between at this point.
25. Bradley Zimmer, cf - Difficult season but still hitting, tools still there.
26. Manuel Margot, cf - Solidly above-average across the board.
27. Sean Newcomb, lhsp - Still doesn't always know where the ball is going, but enormous upside keeps him this high.
28. Tyler Jay, lhsp - Fantastic season has quieted murmurs of eventual move to pen.
29. Josh Bell, 1b - Outstanding bat; only two warts are subpar first base defense and whispers about power, neither of which are major.
30. Willy Adames, ss - Cooling off, may still move to third base, but no one is questioning the bat at this point.
31. Jesse Winker, lf - Power remains elusive but the bat remains outstanding.
32. Max Kepler, rf - Picking up from last year after a slow start and getting jerked around between Minnesota and Rochester.
33. Brent Honeywell, rhsp - Elbow looks fine, performance has been nasty.
34. Jeff Hoffman, rhsp - Nearly ready, good stuff, strikeouts still haven't caught up to reputation.
35. Lewis Brinson, cf - Has struggled this year, stock down a bit but tools are still outstanding.
36. Gary Sanchez, c - Strong bat, surprisingly adequate behind the plate.
37. Luis Ortiz, rhsp - Quietly having an excellent season, stuff is great.
38. Grant Holmes, rhsp - Looks like the good version of Holmes from 2014.
39. Rafael Devers, 3b - Has struggled in first exposure to High-A, still young for level, reports starting to diverge re: hit tool.
40. Franklin Barreto, ss - Tough year, great bat, can't be dropped much more than this (as with Devers).
41. Amir Garrett, lhsp - Mid-rotation upside and nearly ready.
42. Jason Groome, lhsp - My BPA for this summer's draft.
43. Riley Pint, rhsp - My #2 for this summer's draft.
44. Mickey Moniak, cf - You could make a case for any of these top three.
45. Alex Verdugo, cf - Doesn't have extremely loud tools but performance has been outstanding and reports are good.
46. Reynaldo Lopez, rhsp - Looks like everything clicked in June; stock in a state of flux as we see what happens going forward.
47. Raul Mondesi, ss - Placeholder rank; stock continues to be in flux between weird first half and suspension.
48. Nick Williams, cf - Some of the best tools on this list, but the Ks remain a warning flag.
49. Cody Bellinger, 1b - Surprisingly athletic for first baseman, great power, great hit tool
50. Dillon Tate, rhsp - Elite stuff, up and down season.
51. Ian Happ, 2b - Hot start in Double-A, should stick on the dirt as a fringe defender, concerns from some quarters about holes in the swing.
52. Nick Gordon, ss - No-doubt shortstop having typical season.
53. Ryan McMahon, 3b - Very rough year in first exposure to Double-A, tools still the same.
54. Brett Phillips, cf - High K% for the past year now is major blemish for otherwise above-average CFer.
55. Raimel Tapia, lf - Amazing season after terrible start, with more walks to boot.
56. A.J. Puk, lhsp - Hard to place, inconsistent season.
57. Kyle Tucker, rf - Has shown flashes of brilliance, doing fine in full-season ball.
58. Carson Fulmer, rhsp - Aggressive Double-A assignment hasn't sunk him, flashes of dominance.
59. David Paulino, rhsp - Having an outstanding season, mid-rotation upside.
60. Phil Bickford, rhsp - Hasn't slowed down yet, though skeptics claim he'll eventually struggle without a decent third pitch.
61. Francis Martes, rhsp - Major June turnaround partially restores his stock.
62. Yadier Alvarez, rhsp - Longenhagen's report is enough to get him this high; need corroboration from other sources before he goes higher, and even then it may be too aggressive a placement.

50 FV
63. Robert Stephenson, rhsp - Rough year, can't command his stuff, middling reports.
64. Kyle Lewis, cf - Borderline B+ draft prospect.
65. Trent Clark, cf - Oozes tools, too early to put him much higher.
66. Corey Ray, cf - Borderline B+ draft prospect.
67. Nick Senzel, 3b - Borderline B+ draft prospect.
68. Bobby Bradley, 1b - Enormous power, but the K% is still scary.
69. Luke Weaver, rhsp - Great start to abbreviated season, looks like good #4 starter, may belong in the next tier up.
70. Yohander Mendez, lhsp - Stuff is improved across the board, having an outstanding year, may be too low.
71. Jorge Alfaro, c - Unicorn profile remains tantalizing, future remains uncertain.
72. Jorge Polanco, 2b - Quietly decimating Triple-A arms, showing all his previous strengths but with game power now as well.
73. Aaron Judge, rf - Hard to place; upside is very strong but his low points have been scary.
74. Tyler O'Neill, lf - Strong breakout performance makes him a no-doubt Top 100 guy.
75. Albert Almora, cf - Elite defender, solid bat, could be too low.
76. Harrison Bader, cf - Continues to hit, getting harder to shrug off.
77. Eloy Jimenez, rf - Breakout season.
78. Justus Sheffield, lhsp - Having a solid season; his stuff warrants the placement even if he hasn't dominated.
79. Chance Sisco, c - Bat looks very good even without power.
80. Christian Arroyo, ss - Solid if unspectacular year in Double-A, 60 hit tool but not much power.
81. Kolby Allard, lhsp - Placeholder rank until we see he can stay healthy all year; upside is immense.
82. James Kaprielian, rhsp - Placeholder until we see if he needs surgery.
83. Ronald Acuna, cf - A bit of a forgotten prospect after breaking his hand, but Low-A performance and reports were outstanding.
84. Joe Musgrove, rhsp - Possibly too low, reflecting continued disconnect between elite performance and middling reports.
85. Derek Fisher, lf - Not a star but having a great year, hit tool concerns have been somewhat quieted.
86. Jake Bauers, rf - May be too low; power has been sporadic this year but has done well in right field, very young to hit so well in Double-A.
87. Mike Clevinger, rhsp - Up-and-down year, has shown flashes of greatness; last year was no fluke.
88. Blake Rutherford, cf - Solid B draft prospect.
89. Harold Ramirez, cf - Quietly having a nice year, good tools, yet another great Pirates outfield prospect.

93. Hunter Harvey, rhsp - Would be much, much higher if he could stay healthy for a while.
94. Mitch Keller, rhsp - Good mix of upside and performance.
95. Jack Flaherty, rhsp - Doing just fine, although several reports suggest a back-end guy.

97. Mike Soroka, rhsp - Great performance this year, solid stuff.
98. Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3b - Very up-and-down season, has the bat to be a first-division regular at third.

100. Renato Nunez, 3b - Tough season, but he's young for Triple-A.
101. Delvin Perez, ss - Solid B draft prospect.
102. Matt Chapman, 3b - 6 glove, 7 arm, 6 power, but the hit tool is the big question mark.
103. Braxton Garrett, lhsp - Solid B draft prospect.
104. Matt Manning, rhsp - Solid B draft prospect.
105. Ian Anderson, rhsp - Solid B draft prospect.
106. Zack Collins, c - Would rank higher if we knew he'd stick behind the plate. Solid B draft prospect.
107. Chris Paddack, rhsp - Fastball and changeup are both plus, slider looks much better than curve did, major helium arm could keep rocketing up list.
108. Reese McGuire, c - Good bat, no power, great catcher.
109. Andrew Knapp, c - Solid bat, not sure whether he pushes Alfaro aside and claims the Phillies' catching job.
110. Austin Barnes, c - Underrated prospect, great pitch-framer, nice bat.
111. Roman Quinn, cf - Solid season.
112. Francisco Mejia, c - Sort of a breakout season, still not getting enough attention, possibly due to repeating level.
113. Josh Naylor, 1b - Solid first base prospect, deadly with a sharp object.
114. Jose Peraza, ss - Fast, won't walk a ton, won't strike out a ton, won't hit for power, up-the-middle profile; it all adds up to a decent regular.

116. Forrest Whitley, rhsp - Weak B draft prospect.
117. Dakota Hudson, rhsp - Weak B draft prospect.

129. Austin Voth, rhsp - Quietly outstanding year, underrated stuff.
130. Stephen Gonsalves, lhsp - Haven't read any recent reports, but between solid arsenal and great performance he has to be a Grade B.
131. Jacob Faria, rhsp - Supposed arsenal improvements are more important than an up-and-down season.
132. Anthony Alford, cf - Ugly season, tools are still there, not sure how to rank him.
133. Javier Guerra, ss - Ugly season, tools are still there to be a double-digit home run, plus-gloved shortstop.
134. Beau Burrows, rhsp - Not a lot of Ks but stuff is good and performance has been just fine.
135. Triston McKenzie, rhsp - Potential breakout arm.
136. Jake Thompson, rhsp - Good stuff, not a lot of strikeouts, hard to place.
137. Yusniel Diaz, cf - Hampered by injuries, has shown flashes of brilliance.

45+ FV
138. Ronald Guzman, 1b - potential regular at first base, which is crazy to write; completely different reports from last yea regarding the bat.
139. Daniel Robertson, ss - Not much power, may not stick at shortstop, good bat/patience combination keeps him interesting.
140. Tyler Wade, ss - Underrated shortstop prospect, could be MLB starter.
141. Franklin Perez, rhsp - Wowed Houston enough to earn an early promotion to full-season ball, where he's continued to perform. Loud stuff, too.
142. Logan Allen, lhsp - Elbow injury supposedly isn't that serious, but it's still enough to ding his stock. Mid-rotation upside.
143. Cody Ponce, rhsp - Finally back, stuff is loud, ranking is a placeholder until we see more.
144. Duane Underwood, rhsp - Stalling in extended spring training, not sure how he's doing.
145. Kyle Zimmer, rhsp - Can't stay healthy, top-of-rotation upside.
146. Matt Olson, rf - Tough season, harder to see a starting first baseman, not sure if he cuts it in right field, but the ingredients for an above-average regular are still there.
147. Mark Appel, rhsp - Good stuff has consistently played down, stock down from off-season.
148. Domingo Acevedo, rhsp - Concerns about ultimate role still loud, but he's performed very well this year.
149. Lucas Sims, rhsp - Difficult season after promotion to Triple-A, stuff still warrants placement.
150. Sandy Alcantara, rhsp - Electric stuff, but very far away.
151. Touki Toussaint, rhsp - Electric stuff, shows flashes of harnessing it.
152. Willie Calhoun, 2b - Wonderful bat but he's a fringe defender wherever you put him; not a second baseman.
153. Antonio Senzatela, rhsp - Up-and-down season, fastball still a strong pitch.
154. Franklyn Kilome, rhsp - Has rebounded well after the crazy start to his season; immensely tall human being may need longer to control filthy stuff.
155. Oscar de la Cruz, rhsp - Placeholder until we see how he does this year.
156. Josh Ockimey, 1b - Could be too low; reports are consistently saying the body is better this year and the approach will play at higher levels.
157. Justin Dunn, rhsp - another draft prospect.
158. Nolan Jones, ss - another draft prospect.
159. Spencer Adams, rhsp - Strange profile continues to make it hard for me to know where he ought to be ranked.
160. Adalberto Mejia, lhsp - Somewhat divisive prospect, shows flashes of mid-rotation potential.
161. Chad Pinder, ss - Slow start fully behind him now, solid infield prospect.
162. Taylor Guerrieri, rhsp - Mediocre year, haven't read any reports on his stuff.
163. Cornelius Randolph, lf - Injured most of the year, warm weather kid in cold-weather league was just starting to heat up when he went down.

165. Sam Travis, 1b - Solid first base prospect, out for the year.
166. Marcos Diplan, rhsp - Polished performer, pretty good stuff.
167. Dylan Cozens, rf - Not sure where to place him, have doubts due to stadium.

173. Yu-Cheng Chang, ss - Nice pop, having a good year, pretty good upside.
174. Ariel Jurado, rhsp - Stock holding steady.
175. Brock Stewart, rhsp - Possibly much too low (or high); performance has been outstanding, haven't read many reports, placeholder ranking for now.
176. Ryan Cordell, cf - Tough profile to rank, but he knows how to hit the snot out of the ball.
177. Tyler Mahle, rhsp - Good year, could be a mid-rotation guy if the arsenal develops fully.
178. Garrett Whitley, cf - Placeholder based on pedigree.
179. Joe Jimenez, rhrp - Amazing relief prospect.
180. Richard Urena, ss - Up-and-down season, reports have been middling, at his best he belongs much higher.
181. Jaime Schultz, rhsp - Control comes and goes, but he's done enough to make thoughts of a rotation future less ludicrous than they'd have been a year ago.
182. Josh Sborz, rhsp - Good stuff, mid-rotation upside, having a great year.
183. Jeimer Candelario, 3b - Terrible start but the bat is strong even if he's a fringe defender at third.
