Comments:
1.18 Delvin Perez
There ended up being a lot of players I liked available here that I hadn't counted on: T.J. Zeuch, Justin Dunn, my main squeeze Dakota Hudson, even Actual Yankee Blake Rutherford. I decided to go with what I saw as the fairly obvious choice. The only thing separating Perez from being a top 10 pick was a positive PED test, something I care not a wit about, and that made him not only attainable, but affordable as well, which cannot be said of Rutherford. The Cards gave him slot at his eventual landing spot, I'll give it to him at 18 as well, because, well, that's what would have happened. Second and third choices were Dakota Hudson, and, believe it or not, Carter Kieboom. Hudson was a tough pass, but you just don't get a shot at talents like Perez at this stage very often.
2.62 Akil Baddoo
It's hard to know what kind of player Baddoo will turn out to be, but he checks so many boxes. Very young for his class, though not quite Perez-young, and could be average or better in every area besides throwing (and really, who cares?). It may take a while to hammer things out but the hitting tools are too promising to pass up. Also considered Braden Webb, Matthias Dietz (two of My Guys in this draft), Alex Speas, who I never much cared for until he was around for this pick, and the much less interesting Jon Duplantier. Baddoo signed for a below-slot $750 K with the Twins, and I figured a bump was in order.
3.98 Nolan Martinez
My drafting philosophy, such as it is, definitely differs from the real Yankees, but they lined up well here. Took a $1.15 million bonus to get it done, which I fully anticipated (had him pegged at $1.1 mil), and while I think it may have been stupid to pony up when your Matt Krooks and Corbin Burnses could be had for slot here, I decided to roll with it. I feel a bit odd when my safest selection is a big-bonus HS pitcher. A dead ringer stylistically for last year's Actual 3rd Rounder Drew Finley, who I actually kind of hated at the time, but Martinez has the added elements of relative youth, athleticism, and Projectability.
4.128 Daniel Johnson
After rearranging some Shadow Furniture after Matt Krook went off the board a couple of picks earlier, Johnson edged out Jeremy Martinez here. Johnson rapidly turned into my "Don't Leave The Draft Without..." player, which was Willie Calhoun last year, so maybe there's something there. Or not. Either way Johnson is a diminutive OF at 5'10" 180 with monster defensive tools - ran a 60 in the 6.3s and threw 101 from the OF in a workout, and that alone would have gotten him drafted somewhere this year, but his offense just exploded. He started out in JuCo, where he wasn't very good, then to NMSU where he offered a workmanlike .305-.406-.397 with 21 BB 28 K in 187 PA with 2 SB as a soph. Then this year he ramped that up to .382-.434-.630 18/29 in 277 PA and stole 29 bases. Lead the WAC or came close to leading in basically every offensive category. He was in a great hitting environment, and his swing isn't much to look at, so that power will probably not be coming with him to the pros, but he's one of the best athletes in the draft and just coming into his own. Signed with the Nats for a bit under slot in the 5th, I'll give him a bump too.
5.158 Payton Henry
Certainly my most out of character selection. He's a catcher, he's a HS catcher, from Utah, he's old for the class, and with a big bonus demand. Fuck it though. I like what I see. Quick bat, very strong (cartoonish forearms), should be a decent athlete for the position as he gets into better shape, 92 off the mound, makes it look easy. Good vibes.
6.188 Garrett Williams
Missed out on Matt Krook, let's take the other Matt Krook! Williams' defining characteristics are wildness, injuries, more wildness, and very rarely pitching. Having said that, rather like Krook he has first round stuff - you can tell because nobody in the CCL could put bat-on-ball with him. A great athlete whose FB/CB are so good that it's worth seeing if he can start, but he plays way up in the pen and he's one of those guys whose ceiling might be higher there. Thought about poaching White Sox 7th rounder Bernardo Flores here (still might if Williams does anything cray). Had a good feeling about him and was one of my top post-10 targets, flashbacks to Taylor Hearn last year.
7.218 Francisco Thomas
Another Puerto Rican, though he went to school in the US, got a pint-sized bonus from the Brewers despite a SDSU commitment. This is a damn sight more HS hitters than I usually like to take, but this is a fast and loose kind of draft. Always liked Thomas, and even though he's both raw and not toolsy, I think he's worth a shot here.
8.248 Kevin LaChance
Senior time! LaChance was one of my top SR targets, and, in what is and will continue to be a recurring theme, he's a college guy who may have something left in the tank. Speedy UTIL-type who doesn't have to fake it at SS.
9.278 Brennon Lund
Another short lefty-swinging OF. As a 5-10 200 pound Mormon guy, you'd kind of think he's a tool-less dirt-eating scrapper, but not so (although he's likely to be billed as such if he pans out), he has some physical gifts that didn't play out in the box score (well, until now as he's tearing the Pioneer League a new one in extremely SSS...although all college hitters do that). He's a well above average runner with a very strong arm, could play CF, or at least a corner well, and has a loose swing. Short, but not small. Best baseball is in front of him. Picked after the 10th round, no word on bonus so probably 100K, but bumped him up.
10.308 Matt Anderson
Statistical Senior Pitcher. Performance went through the roof in his final season, and now he's $10,000 richer for it.
Late picks of note:
Manny Jefferson: Big Fave. He's a sight to see playing SS at 6'3" 180 pounds, which is probably conservative, if anything, and actually has a non-zero chance of sticking there. Has plenty of arm for 3B and was drafted listed as a 2B. Raw-A-F coming out of HS, didn't play varsity as a JR (!), walked on at Pepperdine, and couldn't hit at all until his JR year when his power came on in a big way hitting 12 homers. Major K problems in college, never faced good competition, and may have a whale of a time making contact in the pros, but I like his trajectory and is just a fun prospect.
Joe Galindo: My 2nd New Mexico State Aggie! Low mileage relief prospect with a big arm who needs a lot of work. JuCo transfer, apparently barely pitched until this year, but struck out a ridiculous 45 batters in 28 innings, along with a nearly as ridiculous 23 BB. Arm Talent!
Francisco Del Valle: Unassuming Puerto Rican COF with a nice lefty swing geared for power. Like all Puerto Rican players, he's very young.
Ryan Williamson: One of my favorites throughout the draft process, odds of starting took a hit due to his continued control problems and eventual TJS. Easily has a starter's repertoire and has shown the ability to strike out a lot of very good hitters. High ceiling as a reliever.
Jacob Heyward: not sure if he signs or not, but worth a shot at this point . Late bloomer? Even though he's nothing like Jason, give me brotherly bloodlines all day anyway.
Jay Jabs: catchy name, lousy Cape performance, good tools at 3B, picked it up this year.
Chuckie Robinson: bit of an underachiever in college as he had some pedigree coming out of HS. Raw power, maybe that comes out in the pros. Black catcher.
Andrew Wright: here's a phrase that's never been used before: the poor man's Bernardo Flores. Has as close to no college track record as one can have, but projects well.
Delvin Zinn: Hope he signs. Cool name, defense, a second Delvin for the pile.
Luke Van Rycheghem: Longest surname Available. Raw Canadian actually has a decent looking swing, and could be something if he stick at C.
Gabe Gonzalez: Been on the radar for quite a while. Doesn't know where it's going but he's big and has solid stuff, I bet he adds velocity. Should have gone higher.
Joe Burton: Actual Yankee. A 6'4" 240 pound beast of an OF. Good power, obviously, decent athlete, what's the worst that could happen?
Chandler Eden: Remember him? Horrible delivery, horrible pitcher, but let's gamble on pedigree. That never fails.
Edmond Americaan: I can't not.
Ryan Boelter: tubby lefty struck out 24 batters in 11 innings in the Northwoods League last year. I'm not bothering to find out if that was a typo. Welcome aboard, Ryan.
Deion Tansel: Microscopic SS with an even more microscopic K rate. As a white guy named "Deion," you know he's been provin' 'em wrong all his life. I had to stop breaking my own rules at some point and get the undersized low-K guys in on the action.
Stijn van der Meer: Tall Dutch Deion Tansel. Shadowed him last year too, I hope he's down with pro baseball.
Jose Gomez: dude is 5'3". I'm not bothering to find out if that was a typo. Welcome aboard, Jose.
David MacKinnon is my Mr. Irrelevant, how in the heck wasn't he drafted? See you in the top 10 rounds next year!
